Drekkard from evo-web.co.uk

I've spent 4 hours of 2 player gaming, and that are my impressions:

MOVEMENT:
- We have recovered freedom of movement. Something no one has commented is that Supercancel is sweet as silk again, as it was in pes4. At last!
- No auto.sidestep also helps regain freedom of movement.
- Very responsive controls. All in all, really good movement control, that's just brilliant. Reactions of the players are impressive. I even managed to save a bouncing ball of the sideline with puyol, something impossible in we9.

GAMEPLAY HAVING POSSESSION
- Attacking is flashy, smooth and rewarding. Lots of movements to do and attackigng possibilities.
- You have to really control passing and crossing. I didn't like the easy crosses of previous versions. It was too easy to just cross the ball to the head of an attacker regardless of the position and skill of the player that was crossing. Try to cross with thuram at full sprint and see where the ball goes.
- Shooting has been downgraded. I still don't know if i love it or not, but definitely don't hate it.
- Throw-ins are bad as usual.
- A lot of deflections and collisions that now seem more realistic. I love when there are crowded plays in the area and the ball just don't go straight to the feet of players. Also, I managed to score one goal thanks to a deflection in a very realistic way.
- High through passing is far better than before, and not as easy as in pes4. It's possible to use it in short spaces just to save the defenders and let your striker free to score, but you have to time it properly.
- Long passes are better, but you need some skill to put the ball where you want and do harm with them.
- Through passes are good, but I don't know if they are too easy to do. I play Barcelona and it seemed easy, but will try it with worst teams later.
- The gameplay is very fluid, players fall and stand up quickly, a lot of new animations that are good.
- The sense of pace and acceleration in the game is very good. You now really feel Ronaldinho changing pace and destroying Sergio Ramos's hip (it's almost as if I heard his bones cracking).

GOALIES
- Really the goalies don't parry most of the shots. I don't fin it irritating. It's just that in real life they parry less shots than in previous versions. If they were able to parry 80% of the shots in WE9, now they only parry 50%, and I think 65-70 would have been better. So, they're not perfect, but they weren't in WE9 and I prefer it as it is right now, it makes the game more fluid and realistic even if sometimes easy shots are not blocked. And now they have very good one-handed animations!

DEFFENSIVE GAMEPLAY
- Now the really bad thing by now. I don't know if it's just getting used to it (I guess it will be that) but defending seems very hard. In 2 player matches, I managed to crush my opponent 6-0, 7-2, 4-2 easily. It's a lot of goals and worst of all, it's nearly impossible to defend 1 vs 1 in front of a skillful player. I was with puyol standing just in front of del piero and pressin X and del piero just passed through. That tends to happen a lot. I managed to score maradona goals with messi dribbling all the juventus players in front of him. I'm just worried about it, it made the matches feel a bit like fifa. I mean, when you dribble an opponent, it's realistic, but a lot of times your striker just passes through defenders, even if they were in the right position and tackled you. In fact, I drove mad my opponent with messi and ronaldinho just passing through everybody.
- Pression is now more effective. In we9 if you pressed square your player would do a foul or just push, almost never gaining possession. Now you can move a defender to close the space and gain the ball with another with pression. That's the way it was meant to be from the beggining, so it's good.

REFEREE
- Veeeeeery good!!! A good step forward!

SOUND
- It has improved only a little, so not very very good. But I heard 2 things that I liked a lot. When I recovered a ball in defense, my spectators gave me an applause! I like it a lot, they were rewarding my deffensive effort! I had never heard this before. Plus, I missed a pass and they were like "oooooh". I liked it also. But there's passion lacking all the time.

OPTIONS
- They're in japanese!!!!

STATS
- As I played barcelona all the time, I must only reckon: Barcelona is great at last. Key players have been given key stats.
- Messi, the man I will marry, is really good (I would prefer him to be a woman, but nobody is perfect).

MUSIC
- The first thing we do in the game is switching music off, so... why do they bother to put it on?

FINAL CONCLUSION
- If I manage to learn how to defend properly, I'll take my hat off. Brilliant final game on the ps2. If only they had developed a little the ml...

That's my two (hundred) cents by now. Happy gaming!

evilgnome:

Played my first 4 games just now. Wow what a change.

First thing I have to say is that dribbling is back!! Players like Ronaldinho will dribble rings around the defence and puts them to shame. Its now easier to out dribble your defender as well as out pace him.

Defending is more difficult as a result. If you miss a tackle or make a mistake in defence you will be punished! I played against Barca in my second game, and on the counter numerous times, with Ronnie and Eto screaming towards my defence is very dangerous.

Passing is spot on, the L1+Triangle is now a very dangerous pass and the flow of the game is very smooth. Makes for some very beautiful football to watch.

Shooting animations are superb, as well as animations in general. Keeper has a few new saving animations which look pretty slick. They have been toned down though, so it is easier to score, but I love how they can now save the ball with one hand. Taking a few cracks outside the box, the keeper really stretches for it. Just when you think you've beating him, his hand just touches it enough to change the direction. Beautiful to watch.

My only gripes with it so far, is that it is a bit too fast. If it was slowed down a tad it be spot on. Ball speed and the weight is near perfect and running at full speed is good, but some of the dribbling animations are too quick. Players seem to snap direction instantly. If some of them could do it like Ronnie, C.Ronaldo etc then it be fine, but not everyone.
At one point, Beckham was out dribbling my defenders which looked and felt wrong.

Overall though a big improvement over 9. This probably should have been what WE9 was supposed to be.

Futix’s Initial Review:

First of all let me say that after playing this game for a few matches I am thoroughly impressed. Though some critics say this game resembles the J League version, having not played that game, the difference between PES5/WE9 to WE10 is instantly apparent. From the few matches I have played I can honestly say that this game lives up to the “10” in the title. From the get go, the intro video has the World Cup feel to it, and the music uplifts you to get ready to play, unlike past versions where the Konami synthesized music depressed you. The menu screens to me are irrelevant since I can’t read them (this game is strictly in Japanese text). Overall the presentation is pretty good and I give it a 9 out of 10.

Game play: This is where Konami made its best improvement by far. From the kickoff the players move a lot more fluid and the speed of the game has been taken up just a notch from WE9I, yet it is not too fast where it seems unrealistic. The way players dribble the ball is a lot more complex and the HUUUUUGE improvement is that the referee is not as anal as in PES5 where he calls every little thing. In this game, the action is actually much more continuous and players battle for the ball a lot more realistically. Another VAST improvement I noticed is that FINALLY individual players live up to their attributes. What I mean by this is that in previous editions, no matter how fast or strong a player was, other players would catch up to him thus making the game unrealistic. In this game, if Eto’o gets one step ahead of a defender you might as well kiss him goodbye, due to his speed attributes he will stride away from most all defenders. Similarly, players like Ronaldinho stop on a dime as opposed to the momentum carrying you about 4 steps after you try to make him stop. This makes the game a lot more realistic and enjoyable. The other major improvement in gameplay was the goalie. Whereas in previous games the keeper was pretty robotic, he now moves a lot more fluid and when diving he actually resembles a keeper. He comes out to cut off angles a lot better and he does not catch the ball every time when the ball is rolling to him on the ground. He actually spits it out by mistake sometimes, which IMO is a lot like real life. I’ve actually seen players trip over the goalie, which was pretty cool. 10 out of 10

Scoring: It is a lot easier to score that PES5/WE9I. Now it does not mean you score at will, but because of the more fluid and realistic play, you can plan much like real football, anticipate players’ movements much easier. 9 out of 10

Shooting: Keep in mind I only played about 4 matches on this but the shooting I think was vastly improved. It seemed to me that in PES5/WE9I one time shots were extremely hard to pull off, whereas here it was evident that if you are given a slight amount of space you can whack the ball if so desired. Now it may not always be on target, and more often that not it is not on target, but at least the option is there which is nice. 9.5 out of 10

Strategy: Konami added a lot more menus into the “Before match” menu selection, but because it’s in Japanese, it’s very hard to determine what is what. At this point, even with Fernando’s initial translation patch, it’s hard to navigate and be able to tell what is what, but new features are definitely there. 9 out of 10
Graphics: Though there was not much they could to the graphics because of the console’s limitations, Konami still went ahead and improved the stadiums which was noticeable right away at the Nou Camp. They almost redid it and it looks gorgeous. I have yet to play in any other stadium but it is definitely improved. 9.5 out of 10

Overall: Though it’s early to judge due to the limited play I have had, I can say it is a very good game all around. EA sports has a long way to go to catch up to Konami especially after this edition. Because I am a believer that there is always room for improvement, this game does not get a 10 out of me, but it’s damn close.

Futix gives it a 9.7 out of 10.

Colours and graphics look just as good as my PES5 (PC) , Ps2 emulator for PC does get the game up and running , only thing is once in game or pen shootout Frame rate drops.

Ah well it was only a test , I guess its back to the PS2 for now !!

In game Konami front screen then menus about 20/25fps , once in game meun it drops to about 10/15fps , only to drop to 1.5/2fps in game ..

Fifa Eleven 10

I've been a big fan of the series for years and years now, and I've always felt that every new edition was a big step forward. But after playing WE10 for a day, I'm really sad. The changes in gameplay mean that the game feels a lot more like FIFA. And that's no compliment. Dribbling and avoiding defenders has become SO easy that it's unrealistic. And realism always was the main feature of the Konami-series.
I have to admit I loved PES5. So maybe if you didn't like that version because it was too hard, or because you didn't score enough, then WE10 is your game.

I hope that my jugdement will chang the coming days. But I don't think so...

Sorry,

Apparently, WE10...sucks.

I haven't played it yet of course, but I've read my fair share of hands-on reviews:

http://forums.evo-web.co.uk/showthread.php?t=30734&page=18

the more i play we10 the less i like/enjoy it.

it's far too easy to dribble and although they've fixed the problem with referees and chipped balls it feels like fifa to me now......NOT GOOD!

i love the new animations etc but the gameplay just feels completely wrong.

think i'll be going back to WE9 and maybe try j-league.

*** first step backwards for konami since i started playing with iss pro on psx ***

Goals come far too easily. There's no excitement at all in scoring. The game is a farce.

Face it, this game is WE9.1. The gameplay is near identical to WE9 with the exception of a few tweaks which do nothing to improve it, but just make it slightly different (easier to score, mainly).

And I'm left aghast at the shoddy, half-hearted attempts at "improving" some of the menu graphics, tactics options and other completely pointless modifications in a woefully pathetic attempt to create the impression of a "new" game.

Needless to say, they haven't even bothered giving the ML a lick of paint.

WE10 is Seabass's worst moment on the PS2. History will prove it, although I think a lot of us don't need wait for time to pass to arrive at this conclusion.

After nearly a week with this game, I can still say it's, well, rubbish.

Get WE9JL.... which is the real Winning Eleven 10. Heck even the Master League has improved in that somewhat.

I do however expect PES6 to be much much better considering it's five months away.

Been playing this solidly for a good 4-5 days now and have to admit this is probably the worst experience ive had with a WE game. WE9 had its fair share of problems but atleast there was a good balance between attack and defense. WE10 is way too attack orientated and a little to Fifa-esque in my opinion.
Gona try to get hold of WE9JL now as ive heard so much good about it hopefully it will re-ignite my love for WE.

After the exiting awaiting of the new winning eleven, as much as I play the game as less that I like it. It has an arcade style. I don’t know if someone here feels the same way, but I think it’s more unreal than the 9. Player’s legs seems to go crazy if you take a better look to the screen.
I played a game, Argentina vs. Brasil, and there were two goals, because the goal keeper’s hands were hitten by the ball, like if he has no hands.
It’s faster than the 9, but it’s ‘ too much faster’ and less real in my opinion.
I would like to know your opinion.
I very dissappointed , KONAMY what are you doing?

so I guess Konami panicked after the harsh criticism of WE9 from its fan base.. so it just made the game MUCH easier and faster....

If WE9 is too slow, and WE10 is too fast, then I believe they'll finally get it right with their next installment... be it PES6 or WE11...

for me it was the refs and lack of computer offence that ruined WE9, all it needed was a few tweaks and WE10 would have been a great game. It does look like they freaked out and went too far after the negative WE9 feedback

People complained that WE9 was too defensive. now they've made it more  Attacking. People also complained the game was too slow. Now theyve made it faster!..stop your whining.

Depends on what platform you're playing the game on. WE9 on the console plays just like PES5 on any platform. But the pc version is nothing like its console counterpart. Gameplay is more wide open, no more 0-0 bore draws.

I think Winning Eleven 10 is great.
And really better then WE9. I think "Completely Real" doesn`t lead to
"Fun Playing". But I don`t mean that fully game-ish (?) is good either.
If you really want a "Completely Real" soccer simulator,
I think Konami isn`t ready for it because of there AI.
They have really improved the AI for offense in WE10.
But if you look close, how the opponent reacts isn`t fully real.
For example, look at the "Off-the-ball" in Winning Eleven.
Look at the players besides the one your moving.
Are some players trying to move around thinking of making a space,
fooling the deffense by running towards the sideline or the opposite ?
The current game console isn`t ready for that complex AI, and nither is Konami.
Look at WE9. Yes the deffense is tight. But the deffense is tight (strong)
in a game perspective, not a Real-life Soccer way.
So what I think is, its impossible to make a Completely Real-Life S
occer Simulator, so I think most important thing is balance.
Balance between, "Real-Life Soccer" and "Video Game-ish Soccer".
And this balance leads to a "fun-to-play" soccer game.
And I think Winning Eleven 10 really improved from Winning Eleven 9
in this perspective.
For example, look at the CPU`s offense. Its not perfect,
but the CPU`s offense make you deffend more realisticly.
You can`t just press the X button or Square button or both together,
or the CPU dribbler would dribble right through you.
You`ll need to take a distance between the CPU dribbler
and let your team mates go for the ball, and even if they cant
take the ball, theres going to be some chances for you to take
that ball back. And the CPU`s deffense, in WE9, the CPU sometimes
didn`t have any body weight. When we turned around
180 degrees, we wouldn`t be able to run right after we made a
180 degree turn because of our body weight and gravity.
But the CPU is sometimes really glued to our player who has the ball,
and doesn`t have any weight or gravity, they just turn 180 degree and
come right at you and take the ball. I don`t call that a real defense.
In WE10 the CPU reacts more slowly, like a human.
They don`t react like mutants or charactors from Dragon Ball like in WE9.
They have body weight.

But a few things about Winning Eleven 10 which need to be balanced is,
the goal keeper. The GK just knocks the ball which drops in the PA
right in front of the goal. Yes, this happens sometimes in real soccer too,
but it happens too much in WE10. Even with the good GK`s, like Buffon.
Also I think the CPU deffense should give more pressure to the offense player in the PA.
But not like WE9 of course.

BTW, one important thing with Winning Eleven 10 is the difficulty settings.
The 5 Stars Max thing(6 Stars if you bought it at the WEN Shop).
In Winning Eleven 10 the difficulty for the stars has changed.
If you`ve been playing Winning Eleven for along time,
and a good player and play it with 3stars, you`ll definitely feel
that Winning Eleven 10 really s**ks.
If you were confortable playing with "3 Stars" in Winning Eleven 9,
then play with "4 or 5 Stars" in Winning Eleven 10.
Because the difficulty of a "3 Star" setting in Winning Eleven 10
is the same as "1 or 2 Stars" in Winning Eleven 9.
Because they made 1 and 2 Stars in Winning Eleven 10 more easy
for new comers.
So you should play with 4 or 5 stars (or 6stars ) in Winning Eleven 10,
if you were playing Winning Eleven 9 with 3 or more stars.
