I am going to visit Berlin next week, and I dunno what to do or see there. I would have loved to go and watch a Bundesliga match, but I can't because none are taking place midweek, no German side plays at home in the CL, and Berlin has no top-tier football teakm right now.

Suggestions? All I know I wanna do is get a football shirt of some German player or team, although I don't know which yet. Some Bayern, Dortmund or NT would be easy to find, I suppose?

I love Berlin. Been four years since I was last there so I dont remember everything and things may have changed but there are some things I enjoyed:

1. Go the the New National Gallery - fantastic building, perfect exhibition space.
2. Walk down Karl Marx alley
3. Buy some prosecco then go rowing on Tiergarten lake
4. Barbie Deinhoff's Bar
5. Die Weinerei (honesty bar!!!)
6. There was a fun antiques market near Tiergarten station but I dont know if its daily
7. Absinth Depot is an absinth shop with many varieties and tastings
8. The Holocaust memorial is power and you are a jew

Gorlitzer Park is the place to go if you're looking to pick up weed

With regards to restaurants, when I went I used to stay with my friend who worked summers at a hostel there so he was the one with the local knowledge and as a result I remember some good places but not where they were or what they were called (also he is tight so we didnt eat anywhere really fancy but that should suit you and Berlin is not a fancy eating kind of place anyway) including a great little Jamaican place and a great little Vietnamese place, however they may not still be there, but if you are interested I can ask him if he remembers where they are.

5. Mein Kampf (honestly!!!)
6. There was a fun concentration camp near Tiergarten station but I dont know if its open for suicidal tourists
7. Hebrew Depot is an butcher's with many varieties and tastings of pork
8. The Holocaust. And you are a jew.

Thank you, Sir_Didier_Drogba. Could you elaborate on those bars you mentioned in points 4 and 5?

Barbie Deinhoff's is sort of an alternative/hipster bar and the kind of place I would normally consider too trendy BUT this is Berlin and also it has a bit of a cabaret/burlesque feel about it which is what I wanted because of Isherwood novels and German movies.... also it is open almost all night. The website appears to have no information but it does have an address http://www.barbiedeinhoff.de/

Die Weinerei is a rough and ready wine bar but it's an honesty bar, you pay like a euro or two for a glass then you can drink as much as you like and you just pay what you think is fair at the end of the night (or drop 50 cents in the jar if you are a scumbag) - great for people like me who like to get sloshed. Could only work in Germany! http://www.weinerei.com/

Other than those I recommend you go drinking a bit away from the city centre in the bars where the real men drink, and if you have the balls go wondering deep into East Berlin and do some boozing there. Also if you want to try some bizarre German beers and dont mind overpaying go to the bars/cafes on museum island. I got one beer there which was black as tar, thick as mud and smelt of gravy.

EDIT: Also if I remember correctly you dont take the no pork thing seriously, if so you MUST try a currywurst - they are available from stands everywhere, super cheap and delicious, basically what they are is a bratwurst chopped up with tomato sauce and curry powder and warm bread.

EDIT 2: Also some of those stands have superb cakes, dont underestimate the Germans' ability as bakers, I remember some wonderful black forest style cake from a stand at that antiques market i mentioned

That's the last time I attempt to give a serious answer on SG :(

Haha, I'm sorry. :D

Berlin is great from what I hear, I've been wanting to go there for ages. I do resent those fucking Germans though.

You should have a Berliner Weisse on a wee trip into Kreuzberg. There are a lot of good museums in the Museuminsel off Unter den Linden Strasse. The Siegesaule is quite high but the best view of Berlin can be found from the TV Tower (Fernsehturm which is just down from Alexanderplatz in the old East. A trip in a Trabi is always fun. There is also a Stasi musuem if you want to see how fucked up the spying in the East was.
A Hertha Berlin jersey is probably not a bad purchase they are always in the first or second Bundesliga.
The long Bratwuerste - the Thueringer Bratwurst is always good for a laugh. I don't mind a Doner Kebab from one of the many Turkish shops. Currywurst is always too. If you feel the need to go to the Reichstag do it early or late or expect a massive queue. The Brandenburg Gate is easy to get to, though I like most feel the holocaust memorial is disappointing, principally because so much more could have been done to make a more suitable memorial, IMHO. The Kurfurstendamm has some good expensive shopping as well.

I feel I should get midly offended for all the Germans on these forums with all the Hakenkreuz action going on here. Especially as all those symbols are actually illegal in Germany to display in public and that I have spent a lot of time in Germany as part of University studies.. Then again, my great-uncle flew a Spitfire!

never thought I'd say this but, thank you Sir_Didier_Drogba!

I'm gonna pay a visit to nurburgring and my intention is to fly to berlin, and then rent an m3 for a couple of days to get there and enjoy the track..

plenty of good information there, will definitely be helpful..

Fair enough, the nurburgring is quite a way from berlin.

it's either bruxelles or berlin..

I'm gonna have to cross the border with a rental car if I land in belgium, and it's not an experience I'm looking forward to, especially with my crappy passport.. berlin-nurburgring is approx. 700km's which isn't too much with a decent car in my opinion, and it is nothing if your ride is an m3..

the thing is, I'm travelling with my miles, and I like flying in business class.. there's no point flying in airbus a320's or boeing 737's business class.. turkish airlines have a couple of 777's and a340's but they only use them frequently to the places like zurich, london, bruxelles, berlin or overseas.. so I have to plan my flight carefully..
