I'm gonna have to cross the border with a rental car if I land in belgium, and it's not an experience I'm looking forward to, especially with my crappy passport.. berlin-nurburgring is approx. 700km's which isn't too much with a decent car in my opinion, and it is nothing if your ride is an m3..
There is absolutely zero border control between Germany and Belgium on the road borders, it is an open border and you drive straight through regardless of your nationality and if you are in a rental car or not, I 100% guarantee this.

I'd 98% guarantee the lack of border controls. As long as you have an EU passport there is no issue or a Schengen Visa. I got stopped once between Eupen and Aachen by some overzealous local Politzistinnen...

I dont think he does have an EU passport as he is a Turk but as far as I am aware it really makes no difference as once you have entered Schlengen with appropriate permission you are free to travel around.

Yep, travelling around Europe I very very rarely need my passport at borders - apart from when I've gone further east to Poland, Hungary etc, but even then not always. Usually it's straight through. They sporadically man a few, but it's fairly rare.

On entereing the Schengen area he'll be issued with a 90 day visa which he can use inside the zone.

EU countries can close their borders if they feel the need to do checks. This was the case during the 2006 World Cup in Germany. I understand Denmark was considering closing its borders at one stage.

They don't want to make that too confusing do they!? :P

The landscape seems to change regularly enough. Now even Switzerland has open borders...
I've updated the diagram above.

I have a theory that the more red tape there is, the more jobs there are for bureaucrats.

Why Berlin? You should go to Munich instead. Berlin seems like it has a very utilitarian vibe about it and the people are all weird hipsters like Brooklyn or something. Munich is just a bunch of fat friendly alcoholics.

Don't have an opinion on what uniform you should buy as I'm not enamored with the current Bayern jersey to be honest. Gotze is probably going to be the biggest star though, and a Gotze Dortmund will be iconic even if he eventually leaves because it was his first club.

Yeah Berlin is a much more "young and hip" sort of vibe. Munich is more about Big Beer, Big Boobs, Big Pork and Potato. Mmmmmm

I agree, although the Bavarian frivolity can be seasonal.

Yeah, the middle of winter is a strange time to be taking a vacation if you aren't going somewhere tropical.

Most of the young hip Germans will probably be in Arenal or Turkey or doing enjoying some Apres-Ski in the Alps somewhere.

I like boobs, not to mention the Bier, Schweinhaxe and Kloesse.

Ironically most German potatoes come from nearer Berlin than Munich...

People travel in the summer, not the winter. The only winter vacations that anyone takes are 1) skiing or 2) tropics.
