havin MLS teams play teams from Europe is something id like to see, but in friendlies, MLS teams in Libertadores, like Mexican teams do, isnt a bad idea.

I'm just curious, as both a football fan and an American, what many of you think of perhaps admitting the top teams in the American MLS into the Champions league each year.

I understand there are some problems with this:

A) Travel
That damned Atlantic is kind of big

B) The difference on what time of year the leagues Begin and End.
If i understand correctly, the Group stage of the CL begins about the same time that the MLS league is wrapping up, thereby providing some of the American teams with no other matches that week than the ones in the CL

Again, this is all hypothetical, but i think it can be said that the standard for MLS teams is rising, and in a few years I could see the MLS gaining parity with maybe the English Division 1.

So, what do you all think? Yanks in the Champions league?

Dude...you're a moron.

I think you guys are going too far in calling the author of this thread a moron.

He has a very good point. We need a world tournament, but where all the games are played in neutral sites in Europe, so that way, the travel won't be as bad.

The reason is not because an MLS team will beat Real, but because we want to see teams from all over the world get to play each other, not just from all over Europe. I'm talking K-league teams too. Sure, the bad times would get weeded out real quickly and soon only Euro teams and maybe an Argentine team or two would be left, but it would be a great experience.

And I think the MLS is underrated. All of the players that played internationally for us in the World Cup played in MLS (except one, Brad Friedel, the keeper). And let's see. We destroyed 4th ranked portugal. We dominated the team that ended up in 4th place. We soundly beat Mexico. And we should've beaten Germany, who finished second, if it weren't for terrible officiating.

Many people here seem to have forgotten the taste of American football that the Euro giants got in 02.

Okay anyone saying the MLS sucks compared to other leagues is stupid. The MLS has only been around for what 10 or 11 years now. All these other leagues have been around for over 100 years so of course they are going to be stronger. I mean were any of these other leagues incrdible strong and powerful when they started? NO. No they weren't. All league go through ups and downs when starting out. Serie A wasn't the powerhouse it was today when it first started. Same with the old division 1 in England or the Mexican league. It is unfair to expect the MLS to be an amazing league with all world talent when it just starts. No league in the world has done that. In 25 years you can judge the MLS but it is ignorant to judge it now compared to other leagues that have had a 90 year head start on it.

Anyway no the MLS should play in the CONACAF Champions Cup. I mean the MLS shouldn't gravy train off the UEFA events. They need to make the CONACAF ones good.

Actually, Brad Friedel did play in MLS in 1996 with the Columbus Crew then he went to Liverpool.

bad idea, but tbh, mls teams have won some concacaf competition twice or something. mls teams need to work on away form. i think we're just as competitive as any other league in the americas at home, but we play awful away from home. thats the point. all other teams can play away games without sucking it hard but mls.

I think as years go by, maybe 20-25 years the MLS will be a top league in the world because we all know from Real Madrid and Chelsea that the more money you have the more talent you can buy and once the MLS gets enough interest where the billionaires of America get involved its gonna be interesting to see some of top players start heading this way... Im not saying its gonna happen but think about it NBA,NFL and MLB players make more than the top European league players on avg. do and NHL makes about the same amount money and we all know that in the end money talks... but im just talking who knows MLS might not make it that far but im just saying if it does dont be surpised if some of the elite come play over here.

No no no that will never happen, forget it MLS. Some months ago they proposed that there would be some sort of Club World Cup with the champions of every confederation to replace the Intercontinental cup, which actually is played between the winner of the Champions League and the Copa Libertadores, we know already that Mexico doesn't belong to Conmebol, actually if a mexican team wins the Libertadores the Intercontinental cup won't happen that year, anyway most of the federations opposed to the "Clubs world cup". Also you know Copa America is organized by the Conmebol, however Mexico and Costa Rica got invited this year(in 1997 they also invited Spain, in 1999 Japan and in 2001 Canada). I've heard they want Mexico to host the Copa America someday.

Good Idée, but wait 20 years or something.
You need time to reach that level.=)

Mate, their is a reason why it is called the EUROPEAN CUP, even in 20-25 years you wont see it happen, it's like saying Brazil and Argentina should be in Euro 2004, that defeats the object of the competition. It's a European based competition and has no room for any team outside of Europe. Besides if MLS teams did compete in the CL, i guarantee they wont be doing no Porto, they would get thumped every match.

Another thing to consider, it 100% WONT happen because of the travelling from Europe to USA, for that reason alone, with a conjested fixture list, it will never happen. Stupid idea, that has too many implications.

Dude!
Of course I don't mean it would be like our CL, but in a similar concept with teams all over the world.
I know we already have that but no clubs take this match seriously.
btw the biggest reason I sad "good idéa" was to get some debate here. ;)

Simply put, it would never work.

Though if the US and the MLS were some European teams and the teams with the same players got into the CL, they probably wouldn't go that far.

I heard that Mexico wanted the 2008 Copa America cuz it seems that Venezuela is gonna have problems organizing it.

I don't think having billionaires involved in MLS will help much. MLS operates differently than European leagues. MLS has a salary cap, so teams won't be able to buy all the good players and become like Real Madrid or the New York Yankees. Plus, the youth system is different. MLS teams draft the top college players, and the poor teams get to pick first. Because of the this, MLS will not become like the European leagues. They will have parity and fairness. Unfortunately, this means less money for the players, and that means players will just go to Europe for more money.

Now if MLS got really popular, and landed lots of TV deals and people flocked to watch it and paid 50 bucks a ticket, the league would get richer, the salary cap and player wages would get higher, and good players would come (and the good US players would stay).

It wont ever happen.

I lived in North America...there isn't any support for football, no 1 cares, and with a country that ignores football so much, they don't deserve to be in UEFA competitions.
