I agree with absolutely every word of this, excluding the mention of Demons which I havent read. The Idiot is a terrible book, I like the idea of the perennial optimist but it is badly written and does not have the substance to back up the length. It was written at a time when Dostoyevsky was strapped for cash, and it shows. It was serialized in magazines prior to publication as a novel, and he was paid by issue, which both explains the length and the fact that every single chapter ends in a ridiculous cliff hanger. The supposed great character development is actually really basic when you scratch the surface.ShiftyPowers;3668030 said:The Idiot is garbage in my opinion. I really like Dostoevsky, but found The Idiot and Demons to be incredibly boring and pointless. Crime and Punishment is pretty good, but I tried to re-read it recently and found it rather tedious as well even though it was my favorite book ever when I was 19. The only novel of his I can give my full endorsement is The Brothers Karamazov which is a masterpiece. I've read it twice, once at 21 and again at maybe 28, and despite its length I read the novel in about 2-3 days each time because it is so good.
I actually thing Wilde's plays are pretty lightweight, fun but not much depth. Fluffy literature. If you want to get the real Oscar Wilde, the best place to start is The Picture of Dorian Gray, and then move on to his shorter work.Mandieta6;3668161 said:You have to read/watch The Importance of Being Earnest. I liked Lady Windermere's Fan but Earnest is better. Easily one of the best pieces of literature I've ever read and up until recently was my undisputed favorite work of fiction.
