Just finished The Karamazov Brothers, oh man, it's such a brilliant book, I'm madly in love with Dostoyevsky's characters, that man was out of this world. This book has finally dropped down from the first place of my favourites my beloved magic realism, didn't expect that. I have read Crime and Punishment, White Nights, The Double, Netochka Nezvanova and The Idiot. What do you guys recommend me to read next?

If you're already used to Dostoyevsky's works, You should go for Crime and Punishment, it has such a wonderful narrative and Raskolnikov is definitely the most well developed character I've ever read. Really complete book, but The Idiot is not that far from it.

Read The Idiot then, you'll get familiarized with how he works alongside psychology, morality and politics to enrich his characters' motivations. You'll enjoy a lot more Crime and Punishment this way.

The Idiot is garbage in my opinion. I really like Dostoevsky, but found The Idiot and Demons to be incredibly boring and pointless. Crime and Punishment is pretty good, but I tried to re-read it recently and found it rather tedious as well even though it was my favorite book ever when I was 19. The only novel of his I can give my full endorsement is The Brothers Karamazov which is a masterpiece. I've read it twice, once at 21 and again at maybe 28, and despite its length I read the novel in about 2-3 days each time because it is so good.

I dont like Hemingway

I'm not a huge fan either. A Farewell to Arms is a truly great work in my opinion, but nothing else warrants his lofty standing. His reputation mostly comes from his short stories and to be honest I don't read short stories.

I'm a pretty harsh critic though; I started a "Goodreads" account to keep track of what I read awhile back. Also reminds me what I thought were great. Here is the extent of my 5* ratings for literary books (excludes a few football books).

The Great Gatsby, A Farewell to Arms, Oblomov, War and Peace, The Brothers Karamazov, Don Quioxte, Darkness at Noon, Light in August, A Hero of Our Time.

Looking at my 4*s, the only two that I'm tempted to say could be underrated are Lolita and The Master and Margarita.

Ha also how can you even consider this knowing my love for Oscar Wilde?

Can you recommend me one of his books? I've only read The Picture of Dorian Gray from him.

You have to read/watch The Importance of Being Earnest. I liked Lady Windermere's Fan but Earnest is better. Easily one of the best pieces of literature I've ever read and up until recently was my undisputed favorite work of fiction.

I agree with absolutely every word of this, excluding the mention of Demons which I havent read. The Idiot is a terrible book, I like the idea of the perennial optimist but it is badly written and does not have the substance to back up the length. It was written at a time when Dostoyevsky was strapped for cash, and it shows. It was serialized in magazines prior to publication as a novel, and he was paid by issue, which both explains the length and the fact that every single chapter ends in a ridiculous cliff hanger. The supposed great character development is actually really basic when you scratch the surface.

I actually thing Wilde's plays are pretty lightweight, fun but not much depth. Fluffy literature. If you want to get the real Oscar Wilde, the best place to start is The Picture of Dorian Gray, and then move on to his shorter work.
