WC06 with 36 teams?

Ruben Sosa

El Jovato
I'm working on translating it completely but it mainly says that FIFA has accepted South America's proposition of having 36 teams in the next World Cup, if the Organizing Commission accepts it. It then says further down that if it were accepted the WC would be played with 9 groups, with the winner of each group passing to the second round followed by the best 7 runner up's.

I'm currently checking if other sites have stated this as well.

Here's a basic translation for those of you too lazy to learn spanish.

The president of FIFA, Joseph Blatter, manifested the acceptance of the proposition by South America, which would increase by 4 the amount of participants in the next World Cup and left the door open to the possibility of this happening if accepted by the 2006 World Cup Organizing Commission.

(… skipping a bit) It was decided that first if was necessary to debate entirely, especially with hosts Germany, and because of this Figueredo (V.President of Conmebol) has traveled there to speak with them and present them the proposition by Conmebol.

If this were approved on the 3rd of May, South America would pass to have 5 direct spots, as well as Africa and Asia, Europe will have 16, Oceania 1 and Concacaf 4. Also it was established that the Cup with 36 teams would be played with 9 groups of 4 participants each, qualifying to the second round the 9 winners of each group and the 7 best runner ups.

The President of the Uruguayan Football Association and Vice to CSF, Eugenio Figueredo, as acting President due to Leoz (President of Conmebol) being ill, traveled to Berlin where he will stay a week with the means of contacting the Organizing Commission (I’m starting to think it’s Committee and not Commission…) for World Cup of 2006, to try and obtain their support with which the proposition would be approved.

The Executive rectified the decicion of Organizing Commission of the World Cup Germany 2006 that the African and South American confederations begin their qualifiers in autumn (September), before the preliminary draw on December 5th 2003. (… etc, etc, etc.)

if you thought that germany v. saudi arabia from wc 2002 was a waste of your time, just wait for portugal v. new zealand in germany in 2k6.

well it probably wont happen in 2006 its more likely 2010 .. fifa are bowing to south america's pressure after it lost two qual spots (brazil auto winners-- and 5th placed play off) they also announced that 2014 will played in south am

Reserve Team
If they did that then they might as well end the tournament. A joke, too many teams now as it is. The last WC was the poorest in memory. Oh and I think Portugal would only beat New Zealand 3-0. What happened to what was the worlds greatest sporting spectacle?

This is a good idea. You would see the 5th place South American team, who are more than capable of beating any Oceania team(who have a direct spot) go to the world cup. It'll also means that teams like Holland will never miss out on the World cup again. As long as Asia doesn't get any more spots I'm in favour of this.

this is crap!

It seems you have some excellent football knowledge:rolleyes: :kader:

South America has won 9 or the 17 world cups, more than half!
Oh yeh, how many has your confederation won?

The World Cup is just fine with 32 teams. Even with 32, there's still a few teams that are going to be pushovers (Saudi Arabia, China, Slovenia, Tunisia come to mind from WC '02). We don't need four more of those.:nape: (N)

Yeah, the number of teams should be less. I hate watching some crappy countries playing...especially Australia or some ****ty coountry like Yugoslavia.

Both of those countries have respectable NT's. How can you call Yugoslavia a ****ty country? :nape:

32 countries is just fine IMO. No need for more or less, at least for now.

this is carp, just cuz CONMEBOL lost an automatic spot they want it back by adding more teams.

Like others have said this will mean more s***ty teams.

This might be beneficial for UEFA and CONMEBOL who have lots of quality NT's, but why give more spots to Asia or CONCACAF?

Asia without Korea and Japan are extremely crappy, and CONCACAF is the same if u take out USA and Mexico. I dont want to see teams like Hong Kong or El Salvador getting killed in a tournament that is supposed to be for "THE BEST IN THE WORLD"
