Congratulations Italy. I am gutted for the way we went out, but the Italian defense was absolutely rock solid tonight and that's won them the game.

Grosso ran to the leftside of the box by the endline, cut in and Niell went down to cut him out. Grosso jumped over him, clipped him, fell, the ref unhesitatingly gave the pen, and Totti buried it




The game had some good attacking play, especially by the Italians, but what a flipping finish. Aussies can hold their heads up high. Massive achievement to make it to the knockouts, but there is no shame in exiting to Italy, particularly in this way

Long pass to the front. Grosso makes a great feint over Bresciano, into the area, an australian defender tries to clear the ball, Grosso dribbles past him, but goes directly into the Aussie body on the floor, then simulates...penalty given.

I'm so angry that the game was desided by the ref...its just not good. after this I think there should be an instant replay like in the NFL. I feel sorry for the socceroos, Im not saying they deserved to win but they sure didnt devered to lose like that.

Italian play sucks, this whole tournament they played like sh*t, they go out next time when they face a team who is much stronger than the Aussies and they had already big problems beating them so next time it's Arrivederci Italia.

If that's what happened, GREAT piece of gamesmanship by Grosso. Look, you always hate diving when it happens against your own team, and the Aussies have every right to be mad that the ref gave the penalty if he truly did dive, but if you sell it to the ref and get it, that's part of the game. I said the same thing when Rivaldo got the Turkish player sent off. If it works, brilliant. I dislike Italy quite a bit, but I admire that kind of gamesmanship. Good job Grosso. Bad job ref for being suckered into giving the call, but good job Grosso.

I disagree. They played ok, were athletic and defended well, but they barely had any attacking momentium and virtually none while up a man


I get the feeling Materazzi's reputation hurt him there a bit, as the foul wasnt all that awful and this was a pretty good ref. I laughed at Dave OBrien calling him a "highly regarded central defender" though

Italy were better and deserved to win, maybe not in the fashion that they did but they had a man sent off for nothing earlier in the match so I guess what comes around goes around.

This WC is great because the teams that are supposed to go through are doing it. Germany, Argentina, England, Portugal and now Italy

Hiddink got every single thing right. the 3-6-1 formation meant to frustrate the Italians, the passing to tire out the opponents, hoping to reach the ET + penalties stage


and a penalty in the very last second destroys their brave campaign in the world cup.

Nevertheless, the Aussies have done very well, and once again, we see what a great tactician Hiddink is. He makes an average team look good, he plays to their strengths and changes tactics with to match opponents.
