WC Round of 16: Italy vs Australia [P+R]

Italy looked very solid at the back. Despite some decent football played by the Aussies i couldn't see them breaking down the Italian defence and there were signs towards the end that Australia were starting to make mistakes at the back.

Still, i feel for the Aussies tonight, that is one hell of a kick in the teeth to go out that way.

Yes Materazzi's send off was a very bad call on the part of the ref, but nevertheless no one can doubt that it actually was a FOUL, he slid in with a 2-footed tackle and took out not only Bresciano but his own defender aswell. Still it deserved a yellow card at most.

With the penalty, Lucas Neill committed to the tackle way too early, and totally missed Fabio Grosso and the ball, then when he saw that Grosso was still coming towards him he turned his body AWAY from the Italian and tried to SHIELD himself from the imminent collision.

Materazzi's red card = Aggression + harsh red card
Lucas Neill Penalty = NO Agression + Australia getting f*cked over

Even the Spanish press is already all over their referee calling him a disgrace.

Its a real shame that non-footballing countries like Australia and the USA where many people are still being introduced to the sport get to witness this kind of poor refereeing displays. What kind of impression should they take of the game?

The catanazzio is easy to defend and score against ........the opposing players just need to .......well......play weak and counter attack. If you allow Italy to p*ss you off on the field you will lose because;

1) half your team will be sent off

2)you'll be too busy trying to break someone's legs instead of scoring with your own.

This is what happened with the US.....and Australia today.....

Italy will score because it has the talent up front.

See the France-Italy game in the Final of Euro 2000 and you will see what I mean France played them all 120 minutes and in the end......beat them 3-1!

Just sit back, shout at the TV, shout at the referee, but get along with each other.....you all tuned into the same match......why not talk about it constructively instead of E-flaming each other. It was a dubious call but thats the way it goes sometimes. I could name may occasions when we have been eliminated in the past due to IMO, wrong or mistaken calls. A good goal disallowed here and there is often balanced out by a stroke of luck in YOUR favour sooner or later. Sometimes you lose the game because of the ref sometimes by a bit of gamesmanship by the other team. Of course its a sickening way to go out but going out is always gonna be a bitch anyway. Italy lost a man due to an over zelous referee decision, Australia conceeded the goal for the same reason. It stinks if you are Australian but its great if you are Italian. I wouldn't blame the Aussie's for feeling gutted and I sure can't blame the Italians for feeling elated. Australia had plenty of chances to score throughout the game. Stick one of those in the net and things would have been different. They didn't score at all, and there is the real reason they lost in the 90 minutes.
