Ronaldo could face Villarreal
Cristiano Ronaldo is ready to make a surprise return for Manchester United in their Champions League opener against Villarreal on Wednesday.
The Portuguese star missed Saturday's Manchester derby on compassionate grounds following the death of his father and, after the 1-1 draw with City, Sir Alex Ferguson claimed he did not expect the brilliant winger to be available for the trip to Spain either.
However, the 20-year-old stunned Ferguson and his coaching team by turning up to United's Carrington training ground as normal on Monday.
And, after coming through two training sessions, and then providing assurances he is in the correct mental state to play, Ronaldo was added to the party which flew out of Manchester Airport lunchtime on Tuesday.
The news is a huge boost to Ferguson, who has been forced to revise his usual European away-day preparation because of the hour travelling time between Villarreal and the nearest airport in Valencia.
Instead of training at their opponents' El Madrigal stadium as usual, Fergie put his team through their paces in Manchester before embarking on an afternoon flight rather than a normal breakfast departure.
