To configure unsupported Gamepad - The solution

I didn't see the MP-8866 in the config.dat, but then I didn't really look. I looked in the .ini file and it said "NO!" for support.

I don't know why you couldn't find it in the registry though... that worked fine for me. Just copy the name from the .ini file and then search for it... change all registry entries to Logitech DualAction USB and then you can change the buttons in the config.dat

can someone help me?

i have a microsoft gamepad pro. its a 10 button controller and is connected to the GAMEport. the gamepad works fine in other games like madden 2004, however in fifa 2004 it doesnt work well.

you see, i will be able to use the contoller, then for no apparent reason it will stop working and none of the buttons will respond. i have to quit out of the game then rejoin. the wires are not loose or anything, just it doesnt work.

does anyone know how i can fix this?

thanks.

button 10 problem

Well, my problem is that the in-game configuration allows me to set the buttons from 1 to 8.
As you said button 10 refers to "menu" function.
So menu function is on my analoge gamepad is "left stick down-right + button 2" (button 2 is the pass in my config).
As a result i quit the match every ten seconds when i try to make a pass down-right.
My .dat file shows only (after i changed it strictly according to the steps):
YES "Logitech DualAction USB"

I cannot see where could i change the default button configuration...

please comment this...

To check whether your gamepad is supported or not, you can open C:\Program Files\EA SPORTS\FIFA 2004\data\system\config.dat (using notepad) and check if your gamepad is stated there.

Also if your gamepad is supported you should be able to see it ingame in the controll setup after patching the game ------ (for how to successfully patch the game, please see other thread).

So if you don't have a supported gamepad like me, you will find that the config.dat in the "my document" stating:

NO "XXXXXXX"

XXXXXX is the name of your gamepad and you can check this in the control panel. Mine is "USB Joystick"

Let us begin on how to do this. The main point is to RENAME your gamepad as one supported by the game. To do this, you need to change your registry key. First of all, from the config.dat file (in the C:\Program Files\EA SPORTS\FIFA 2004\data\system\config.dat), select the one you want. Definitely you would choose "Logitech DualAction USB". It is located at the bottom.

Now, the main step:

1. go to start > run
2. type in "regedit" and then enter
3. highlight "my computer" since you need to find from the very beginning
4. go to edit > find
5. type in "XXXXXX" - note : no quotation marks needed, i.e. mine is USB Joystick
6. remember to check all the three boxes ( machine code K, value V, and Data D)
7. press search and be patient
8. everytime you find "XXXXXX" - modify it to "Logitech DualAction USB" - be careful, do not use rename, use modify
9. there should be a few more to modify until the end and this process last for around 30 secs depending on how many registry keys you have. The entry LocationInformation cannot be edited and it shows the true name of your gamepad.

Close the registry and check in the Control Panel to discover that you have a Logitech DualAction USB!!!!!

Now you can launch the game and configure the control.

[Optional]

If you want to change the default setting, then you need to modify the C:\Program Files\EA SPORTS\FIFA 2004\data\system\config.dat (using notepad).

For example, Logitech DualAction USB has the following layout in default:

10 1 2 3 5 4 6 7 8 10 9 corresponding to:

menu, lob, pass, shot, trigger run, through pass, sprint, OTB, walk (the last two numbers 10 and 9 can be ignored and the "10" between the two name strings denotes that the game will use 10 buttons for the game)

To change to PS2 default (if I'm right):

10 2 3 4 5 1 6 7 8 10 9

You may need to backup the file first or recover from CD1 if needed.

Alright Chris, I'm in quite the pickle here, hopefully you can help me out. Here's the turn of events thus far:

1. Downloaded latest patch
2. Controller Settings only have keyboard configuration.
3. Checked data\system\config.dat file, but my controller [PSX/USB Pad Adaptor (4-axis, 12-button, POV,effects)] was not present.
4. Checked My Documents\FIFA2004\user\config.dat and it said the following:
[NO "PSX/USB Pad Adaptor (4-axis, 12-button, POV,effects)"]

It didn't say: NO XXXXXX

I thought that was weird, so any ideas?

Re: Re: To configure unsupported Gamepad - The solution

Right I think I know what you are doing wrong here! Don't search in the registry for 'XXXXXX', that is where your meant to be putting in the name of your pad. That was just to show that this could be the name of any pad.

So for example Falape72, you should be searching for 'PSX/USB Pad Adaptor (4-axis, 12-button, POV,effects)' and then replacing this with the name of a supported pad. For other people you should be searching for the pad Fifa has listed in the config.dat file.

Hope this helps!

GREAT STUFF !!!

Thank you !!!

You have just managed to increase the value of my new, fantastic, and by EA Sports' FIFA 2004 unsupported BULL FROG gamepad.

This ROCKS and I could even turn an irritating button off that kept interrupting the game for me.

Absolutely wonderful !!!

I have been asking myself this same question millons of times. I have a Thrustmaster Dual Action that like to make it work in the game, but it is just the right stick problem. Fortunatly there is another thread here for fixing specially the Thrustmaster gamepads. I think I will follow better that recomendation. If you do it in the way this thread says all your games will be affected and you lost the profiler functionability of your own gamepad. I am not sure if doing this you can use also the Logitech Wingman Profiler. That program is nice. If you can then there is the answer to replacing your profiler program also with the Wingman one.

How can i configure my logitech Wingman Rumblepad (9 buttons) to perform freestyle tricks?

Why is the sixth button disabled?
4 5 6
1 2 3

You are maybe not going to like this answer, but if it doesn't work you are going to have to use the Wingman Profiler to duplicate another button in that one. I have done it with the Wingman Cordless and it works like this.
There is a program with name Rumblepad Exptender, but I have never use it, and I am not sure if what you are asking is possible using it. Search the forum for it.

I have a PS2 controller that's not the MP-8866, would it be better to set my controller to MP-8866 or to the Logitech Dual Action. DualAction is only 10 buttons, not 12.

Also, if the number positions in the config file for the Logitech are equal to "menu, lob, pass, shot, trigger run, through pass, sprint, OTB, walk in the game, ignore, ignore" how can I change which button I hit for player skill? It's a bitch to try and hit the select button.
And on the off chance that I can use my controller as MP-8866, what order are those numbers in?
