To configure unsupported Gamepad - The solution

To check whether your gamepad is supported or not, you can open C:\Program Files\EA SPORTS\FIFA 2004\data\system\config.dat (using notepad) and check if your gamepad is stated there.

Also if your gamepad is supported you should be able to see it ingame in the controll setup after patching the game ------ (for how to successfully patch the game, please see other thread).

So if you don't have a supported gamepad like me, you will find that the config.dat in the "my document" stating:

NO "XXXXXXX"

XXXXXX is the name of your gamepad and you can check this in the control panel. Mine is "USB Joystick"

Let us begin on how to do this. The main point is to RENAME your gamepad as one supported by the game. To do this, you need to change your registry key. First of all, from the config.dat file (in the C:\Program Files\EA SPORTS\FIFA 2004\data\system\config.dat), select the one you want. Definitely you would choose "Logitech DualAction USB". It is located at the bottom.

Now, the main step:

1. go to start > run
2. type in "regedit" and then enter
3. highlight "my computer" since you need to find from the very beginning
4. go to edit > find
5. type in "XXXXXX" - note : no quotation marks needed, i.e. mine is USB Joystick
6. remember to check all the three boxes ( machine code K, value V, and Data D)
7. press search and be patient
8. everytime you find "XXXXXX" - modify it to "Logitech DualAction USB" - be careful, do not use rename, use modify
9. there should be a few more to modify until the end and this process last for around 30 secs depending on how many registry keys you have. The entry LocationInformation cannot be edited and it shows the true name of your gamepad.

Close the registry and check in the Control Panel to discover that you have a Logitech DualAction USB!!!!!

Now you can launch the game and configure the control.

[Optional]

If you want to change the default setting, then you need to modify the C:\Program Files\EA SPORTS\FIFA 2004\data\system\config.dat (using notepad).

For example, Logitech DualAction USB has the following layout in default:

10 1 2 3 5 4 6 7 8 10 9 corresponding to:

menu, lob, pass, shot, trigger run, through pass, sprint, OTB, walk (the last two numbers 10 and 9 can be ignored and the "10" between the two name strings denotes that the game will use 10 buttons for the game)

To change to PS2 default (if I'm right):

10 2 3 4 5 1 6 7 8 10 9

You may need to backup the file first or recover from CD1 if needed.

It happens to me also, but press "confirm" and it is being edited. But be careful not to change the value on the left column, only to change the value on the rightmost column.

Thank you very much Chris Tse... ;)

But i have a big problem... In my folder "My Documents/FIFA 2004/", the file "config.dat" indicate me : NO "?" !! My gamepad is named "?" !!! Then, i was going in the "contral panel" in order to look how my gamepad is named in Windows 2000... And the name is "Š" !!! A big big problem... And i think config.dat can't contain others unicode caracter like this ! :( I'm really disappointed because i can't search in registry this character : "?"... It's is impossible cause there are many similar character ! I'm a desesperate case...

Some good stuff, I'll give it a try.......

BTW - when you are searching, after it finds the first one and you modify it, press F3 to continue the search. You'll find a couple more......

Ok....this kinda works. I still can't use the in-game config to change the buttons, but I can prolly figure out which ones I want in the config.dat.

One problem tho, doing this screwed up the axis on the right analog stick. Up is now left, etc.

I have the exact same controller....does the in-game config work for you? Also, is the right analog stick working correctly as well?

Hey bro, first of all thanks a lot for the tips!.

Just a quick question, I've done EVERYTHING you said (I have a ThrustMaster FireStorm Dual Power) and I've replaced my gamepad for the one you said and all. It does work but I still cannot configure it ingame, when I press the text to configure the button it just get stucked in there, it doesn't crash though but I can't do anything. Can't change the button or exit that window. I am forced to press Ctrl + Alt + Del... do you know why or how to fix this?

See ya!

The in-game config works just fine, but I am having some problems with the right analog stick. It works, but not as well as it should.

Thrustmaster Analog problem

Hi everybody. First I have to say excellent work Chris Tse!!!

I got an Thrustmaster Dual Wireless and efter following the instuctions on how to make it a Logitech everything works except the second analog controller. The Axis are flipped just like Bahnzo said. Does anyone have a solution to this? It's kinda hard to use the off ball right now :-)

And for another note, Is it just me or is it incredible unproffesional of the FIFA 2004 creators not to support large brands like Thrustmaster??? I bought this controller just for this game just to find out it doesn't work :-(

To Donovan:

i think you can figure out why you have "?" as your gamepad name. It may be due to some problem during installation of the gamepad driver. Try re-install your gamepad by deleting from the control panel or device manager (with the gamepad still pluging). Restart the computer and plug the port again. Most of the time winXP will detect it as a so-called "generic USB gameport" or something. But if you know the gamepad manufacturer or have a driver disk yourself, try it, especially when you use win98 or me.

To Bahnzo:

If your right analog stick does not work properly, the only thing to do is to reinstall the driver again. Just delete it from the control panel and device manager (with the gamepad still pluging, otherwise you will not be able to delete the driver). Then install back by either restarting the computer or using the "ADD" button in the control panel.

To PES-Access:

If you install the patch correctly and change your gamepad to the one recognised by FIFA 2004, you can toggle between keyboard and your gamepad in the controller setup. I notice that some gamepad like wingman rumblepad and other ones which i think have fewer buttons cannot be configured well (esp. the L1/L2 and R1/R2), so stick the dual action if your gamepad is the same as dual action.

PS: to know whether the patch is installed successfully, you can notice there are some files like readme_en-uk_1-1, readme_fr-fr_1-1 in the fifa directory. Also you in the matchup lobby you can see your game version as "2" in the heading.

Hi Thierry, I am also using a PS2 Converter and I follow excatly what had been told here, e.g. changing registry. Also I make sure that the Config.dat in My Document gives me a "YES". But still, I can't freaking configure the button....
Please help.

Chris Tse I need your help

You told Bahnzo to reinstall the driver for his gamepad couse the axis on the second stick weren't functioning correctly.

Well I tried to do that but since I made my thrustmaster into a logitech the system hangs when I try to remove it. Any suggestions?

I can't name it back to thrustmaster in the registry because I don't remember the exact name :-(
