Yeah, can't credit Deco alone for winning the CL and reaching the EURO 2004 finals. The whole team deserves an award (Y)

All 3 players have done well but Henry has been really poor on the NT and Euro scene while Shev hasn't done much with a poor Ukraine side.

Ronaldinho also didn't go to the Copa which slightly lowered his ratings maybe.

My personal choice though? Ronaldinho. He's been strong this season with Barca leading them to be one of the best teams in Europe.

Henry and Shev are good but they aren't the full package that Ronaldinho is.

If only Henry had played well at the Euros and Shev was Greek :crazyboy:

Maniche, Carvalho, Costinha and some other short Brazillian guy

Duh, of course having won the CL means you'll get plenty of players on your national squad and all of them are quality, but Deco definitely stands out from the rest. He plays in a different level from 99,9% of all players out there, and you can easily realize that by watching him play.
Carvalho was a rock back there? Yes, he was. But we still got Costinha and Maniche on the team and look how we're struggling. Deco's the major difference on the pitch.

There are 2 traits that I particularly like in him:
1) despite being the playmaker, he runs back and tackles as hard as anyone.
He knows those are the things that, despite not making him shine in the eyes of most football fans, will please his manager and ultimately win games.

2) for someone with fantastic individual skills, he's the most unselfish and pragmatic player I've ever seen. If you're in a better position than him to score a goal, you can bet he'll throw you the rock. That's why the strikers appreciate him.

Finally, let me remind you that the spot he's assuming at Barça - playing away from his natural position - only serves to highlight how talented he is.

Shevchenko, Henry, Ronaldinho, they're fantastic players, but if you want to be honest you'll realize nobody had a better season, won more titles and was as influential as the Mágico.

Ronaldinho was more influential then deco but porto were the ones that won the trophies therefore making deco seem more important

he was great for porto no doubt...and still doing good for barca, but ronaldinho would run circles around deco

Zidane is quoted as saying that Ronaldinho should get the award

So there you have it folks, the torch has been passed. This award is given by the votes of the coaches. They dont care who won what, they just look at the player they would most want on their team....and who wants an yone else BUT Ronaldinho. He is just following the Brazilian trend and there is no stopping it!

In Barca:
94 - Romario
96,97 - Ronaldo
99- Rivaldo
04 - Ronaldinho

it just makes sense

Does anyone else ever notice that Portuguese people are always trying to convince us that Deco is a great player? If he was so great, it'd show when you watch him play. He's nowhere close to being in the same leagues as Henry, Sheva and Ronaldinho.

Theres a reason why Brazil never picked him for NT, and he played for Portugal as a consolation. Hey, to be fair Camoranesi did the same with Italy because Bielsa ignored him.

The general consensus with most people is that he doesnt deserve all the accolades you guys give him. I'm convinced he only receives more attention than Carvalho and Maniche solely because he's the 'number 10' player and is more of a sell. I said last season he was no better than David Pizzaro (similar player), and i stand by it. It's true Porto is struggling this season, but i think Mourinho's departure is the main reason. If he remained, im sure he couldve replaced Deco with another overated playmaker.

good point there, because when I heard people being serious about nominating Deco for player of the year, I was thinking what the hell is wrong with them :(

Partisanship in soccer? What a shocker.

yeah man what's wrong with that guy Michel Platini!

Deco is 1,70, weak as crap, not the fastest guy out there as well and he's doing a better job at Defensive midfield in Barcelona than Davids did as all stats prove, when his natural position is attacking midfield. Nuff said.

Who cares about what you think? I don´t see anyone trying to convince you or anyone else. I talk about the players i know well, just like you do the same towards Italian players. Don´t you praise almost all italian players as well (even Materazzi ffs)? We are the only biased ones here? Just look at your goddamn posts.
I´ve been following Deco´s career since he came to Portugal. When he played for Alverca and Salgueiros. He is indeed a great player and was a key figure in all european titles that Fc Porto won recently. Same thing in the domestic competitions but we all know that they aren´t as competitive as the european cups.
I remember that almost everyone (except the ppl who knew him) said that he was going to flop in Barcelona. What are the new arguments now? La liga is weak? Not competitive enough? What´s next? He has to play in Serie A to prove himself as a good player? He is overrated? What about 90% of the players that you mention? Totti? What has he won except for the Serie A , couple of years ago?
Platini, Beckenbauer or about 90% of the spanish press said that he is indeed a great player and that he is again one of the key figures in the team he plays for. I guess their opinion doesn´t count anymore, Mikey is the real unbiased football expert.
Again i emphatize that, altough im a big fan of him, i consider the chosen trio an understandable decision.

I'm trying not being biased here, and no i don't praise materazzi

of course im somewhat biased towards italian players but so is everyone about their nation...but i don't go around saying deco shouldn't win it, totti or cassano should, im saying deco shouldn't win it because he's not as good as ronaldinho or shevchenko, and that's why one of them 2 should win it

and we're saying these awards SHOULD not be based on individual skill alone because Zidane would win it every year till he retires and so would Maradona at the time he played.

I would say Shevchenko. I'd say Ronaldinho is probably the best at what he does, and Shevchenko is the best at what he does. It's very tight and I know this isn't a fair way to decide it, but Shevchenko scores goals... That's how you win games,
