The size of a real-life soccer field VS Konami's soccer field

I think the problem is due to the last 3 games all being written for the PS2 and so there are limitations on graphics hence slowdowns , esp as the latest version has a lot more collision processing.
Yes it would be great to see more details, just as it would be great if they put a bit more effort into the conversions, maybe when they start coding for the PS3 or Xbox360 we'll see?

Sure good idea.....

Passes are fast already

Actually in real life players are clumsy in handling the ball, That IS real life There are only a handful of players world wide that have superior control.

In football there are ALOT of fouls! That is real life.

Actually PES is by far the closest to real life in constructing plays. There is always room for improvement but currently PES is the best.

Who ever said go play fifa didn't think it through, PES is the closest to real life right now.

Well Pontiakos, WE/PES does have a serious problem with the high frequency of fouls. Sure Real football has a lot of fouls, no arguing there. But the frequency of fouls in PES5 was really high. And that could be partly attributed to the small field and tight playing. Maybe if the field was bigger (as in real life) the likelihood of occurance of fouls won't be that high, as the game won't be as tight as it was with the small field, know what I mean?

It solves 2 problems, the high fouls rate, and the small field.

And about the passing, watch a quick real football match downloaded on ur PC. Observe the speed of the ball travelling between the players. See how it moves swiftly on the pitch.

Now perform a pass on PES5. The ball spends too much time in the air, it bumps a lot. Yes this is realistic physics, but it isn't how the overall look of a pass is in real-life. The passing is much smoother.

And fine by me if u want the players to stay clumsy. Taking time to control the ball..etc. Now if u have a larger field, with a less tight play, this clumsiness won't be so obvious. It will have less destructive effects, and will not negatively affect the game with the larger field of play, more room to control the ball.

Again, a win-win situation. Players are less clumsy (or appear to be so) and the field is bigger.

One could only imagine what many players are capable of doing, given the space. The passing u could do, the shooting. Everything.

It seems to me everytime I watch a game on TV, that the field in PES/WE is half the size of the one on TV..... sad.

What kills u is the amazing potential of improvement in PES/WE, whereas Fifa is a hopeless case.

I sure hope so. Next-gen programming is the final hope, because I truly don't think a day will come when a game actually threatens PES/WE's throne. Not this decade at least.

Threatens PES/WE? Not in this decade? Seriously, you have no idea about software development in that case. It only takes few talented enthusiasts to already code together a great football simulation, with a bit of funding that can already be done. Just look at what Konami is doing? It is quite ridiculous. They release the same game two to three times a year under different names and make improvements within it that makes die-hard fans to buy things more than once. People criticize EA's method of releasing FIFA and WC or EC as separate, but Konami releases the same thing with 'slight' improvements.

Then.. PES has not been improved since PES3. Unless you play the game all year, you do not see much of a difference. New features added are in patch-scale, not in a scale that deserves three separate releases.

Then you might ask, is FIFA changing? As I discussed before, not so between 05 and 06, but FIFA has a real strong fanbase and communication in-betwee the fans of the title. Sure player feedback is not taken in so often as it should be, but EA has shown last few years that they do take in player-feedback as a serious issue. Sure, FIFA title has a long way to go, but I at least 'see' the improvements in their department, while when looking on my bookshelf, seeing last three PES titles and WE9, they feel as if the difference is only in repackaging.

Of course there is nothing wrong with Konami sticking to their 'winning formula'. It is great, but unless they start improving things with other than 'next gen engine', I don't see much future.

Sure, it may not be FIFA that nudges PES/WE off the throne from their standstill and perhaps makes Konami developers to work more on the series (it needs major graphics overhaul, brushed textures, though looking good and quite close to their real-life-counterparts, they don't look real by far), however I see that EA has the best chances of doing so, considering that the amount of resources available for their developers is just massive and it only takes few enthusiastic and full-of-inspiration game designers and developers to have the edge, or a breakthrough of sorts. FIFA is stumbling on and on, somehow trying to hold the balance, but PES/WE is in standstill.

I have very high expectations from the next version of my favorite football simulation, I just hope Konami pulls it off finally and 'does' take the next step towards football simulation.

Easy tiger, the 'decade' was a metaphor for 'not so soon' :)

And who says people criticize EA's method of releasing the game? If anything, this is the best thing EA's been doing. Concentrating all year long on ONE game, release it to the world, same version. Perfect.

And who says ppl don't hate KONAMI for releasing different versions of the game throughout the year? This is by far the worst thing KONAMI has done to its fans. It even distracts them from improving one game all year long.

If anything, the best thing FIFA does is the total change in the game, one year after the other. Look at 98....2000....2001...2002...2003...2004.
Each one of these is a totally different game on its own.

But however, Fifa will never threaten PES/WE, not these coming years at least. The game (fifa) is flawed in its CORE. And a drastic change is needed to even get close to PES/WE.

KONAMI has no plan to increase the pitch size.
I remember I saw an interview of we8 or we9 developer.
He talked about this and only said that it would be very difficult for AI to defend if they increased the pitch size. so they would not increase it to as it is in real life.

That makes a lot of sense. Players would just pass the ball around in a wide pitch. BUT, the answer to this is simple: Better Realistic AI.

KONAMI, as producers of sport simulations, should be thinking this way: How do real-life players defend, inspite of having a large field??
Improve AI as in: Strong, efficient Man Marking. Makes the spaces smaller, makes passes more difficult, and controlling the ball more risky.

It's a simulation... they can't not expect to not study the game a bit...

Maybe I missed something, but didnt the original poster answer his own question.

The reason the pitch is the size it is (and all other gameply factors) is to create games of 10-15 mins.
If they made everything 100% realistic, we would get 90min games ending in 0-0. I wouldn't buy a game like that.

Well yes I read this in an interview of Fifa'2000... that's like more than 6 years ago, and in Fifa.

However, with PES/WE, the gameplay is much more deep, and KONAMI is capable of balancing this 'pitch size' matter with the speed of gameplay and time required to move the ball between both ends.

Specially that the small field is already limiting the gameplay, and plus, many of the game's Cons could be solved by it (Faster passing, less fouls)

Ur sure watching the Final right now, the ball's sliding fast between players in midfield, and the players themselves show faster, more explosive movements to compensate the size of the pitch. Unlike PES5 when everything seems to relatively be in slow, clumsy motion.

fifa and pes are both missing dives which happens a lot in real life
I've seen dives in PES5, but there is no way for you to make a player dive. If you want to play a game that lets you choose when to dive you can always play This Is Football/World Tour Soccer. :ewan:

lol that would be pretty cool,if somtimes you could take a dive, but if you get caught you get red carded, it would be like a 50/50 chance.

Dives= Fifa'98 triple 'E' button ... still remember it.

This game had the largest # of moves, they even had the Rabona which u could do on purpose (Hold Shift + double tap 'D')... looked amazing.

Thats exactly what its like in TIF/WTS, except I can't recommend that game as a good soccer game, especially to a PES/WE player.
