Well they did lose all three game in Poland-Ukraine...
Well that is a tournament to forget about that's for certain. But I believe back then they had some inner problems within the squad. Some players didn't get a long, couldn't really play together and all sorts of similar things like that.

I believe van der Wiel was mostly spending time alone from the whole team and concentrating on his rap music or something like that for example. He had an awful tournament as well. Afellay was being a dick for some reason etc. Robben managed to get himself injured in a really stupid way just before the tournament in some meaningless friendly match trying some back-heel pass if I remember correctly, so he wasn't at 100% either during the tournament.

Also the defence was a real problem and was letting in goals too easily. van der Wiel was like he was and Jetro Willems on the left flank had a bad tournament too. Oh and van Persie didn't too much either apart from the goal against Germany.

Its not just the managers though. That team is the worse Holland NT that I know of. RvP and Sneijder are on the decline and players like Depay and Narsingh are not good enough yet to carry their team forward. Their only star player is Robben who is injured. They can still make it if Turkey lose 1 game.

Surely Holland will beat Kazakhstan. But they need Turkey to lose both their games against the 2 qualified teams.

Van Persie looked like he is returning to his best. He played very well.

I think the management is the biggest problem. The likes of Narsing, Sneijder,Bruma,Indi,Wiel etc shouldn't be starters. Krul is better than Jasper, imo.

Absolutely agreed. I can't believe that van Gaal wanted to sign Cillessen as a replacement for De Gea at United. Especially for 30 million euros. Even if they were only rumours. I couldn't have handled that! He looks so tiny in goal, is a decent shot-stopper I guess, but his overall game is lacking.

You're right they shouldn't be starters but... we don't have any better. We're just dealing here with a very shitty generation of mediocre Dutch footballers, combined with the painful decline of a previous generation that made it to second and third place in the last two World Cups respectively. I think the fact we can't beat f*cking Iceland, Turkey and Czech Republic tells enough about that already. I've watched football for about 20 years now and I have never seen Oranje this bad. They just don't deserve to qualify. Even in 2002 they weren't playing this crappy.

The complete and utter mismanagement by the KNVB concerning the appoitment of Hiddink and Blind also has something to do with this, obviously.

Are the up and coming generation this bad, though? Imo, the biggest mistake was to appoint Hiddink in the first place. They should have handled the transition far better. They should have directly moved towards the more talented youngsters instead of the failed mediocre bunch along with remaining senior performers. Koeman would have done that.

Is anything being done about the fitness of Dutch players? One thing is very common among the players- injuries. And even the best of them don't look on the same level, physically, compared to others. Even Strootman, the leader of the new generation and a strong player, is about to miss more than 2 years of football. Its hard not to notice.

Strootman is just genetically fucked, nothing to do with fitness he even got cyclops syndrome

With three knee surgeries in 2 years, it's doubtful whether Strootman will ever return to the level he had before his injury troubles. He would first have to return to full fitness before he can be considered the 'leader of a new generation' IMO.

And even then, there's some players with some potential like Depay, Klaassen, De Vrij... those type of players. But I don't ever see them become absolute world class players like Robben, Sneijder and Van Persie were (or are). The fact that most of the Dutch talent doesn't transfer out to the absolute top footballing clubs in Europe anymore is also a sign. Robben went straight from PSV to Chelsea, Sneijder from Ajax to Real, Van Persie from Feyenoord to a high-level Arsenal. Nowadays our 'talent' goes to clubs like, with all due respect, Newcastle United, Lazio and Borussia Monchengladbach. And most of them don't even make it there. It shows that we are going through a generation of at least not as talented players.

It's sad but I don't think we will be hearing a lot from Dutch football (on club or international level) the coming years. We've had some periods like that before, the last one happening begin and mid-80s (where we even missed a couple of international tournaments in a row) after which the generation Rijkaard, Gullit, Van Basten delivered us our only international cup-win to date. It's gonna be hard being a Dutch football fan the coming years, though the Eredivisie is more entertaining than ever.

Very strange to see such a poor quality Netherlands squad. Netherlands always had lots of stars. I guess you are in a transition which may last a while because I don't see any current young players who can lead the team to glory in the next 3-4 years. Depay looks the most promising potential talent. He has disappointed for United so far but is only 21.

I think Blind is the leader, but he developed so late that he won't have a long stay in the National Team, relatively speaking. Still, guys like Wijnaldijum should be able to beat Iceland.

That was a pathetic performance to end it all, Virgil van Dijk was such a weak defender and Jeroen Zoet wasn't assured in goal either.

Its like qualifying for WC 2002 all over again. :nape:

Netherlands had good team and players in that year ... that elimination was really unfortunate especially after Euro 2000 ... but this year team and players really weak and mediocre level ... Sneijder still being your best player says is all ...
