Kiev and Donetsk doesn't be the same city, so this game is not a derby. It is important game but not a derby.

Liverpool - Manchester United
Barcelona - Madrid
Inter - Juve

Aren´t those games derbies?....

a derby is a crosstown (or state or county) match.
exactly ... there are city derbies, regional derbies, etc. ... it may have traditionally started as an intra-city thing, I'm not sure, but inter-city, regional, and even national derbies exist nowadays ...

Hum, ok. You have yours idea of a derby, I have my. For me Benfica-Sporting is a derby, Benfica-Porto is a classic match, not a derby.

This is probably just a language issue. In Portuguese we have "derby" for cross-town rivalries and "clássico"/"clasic (match)" which applies to other sorts of rivalries as well as to derbies. In English there seems to be no such distinction, and all cases end up being called derbies.

to be honest with you guys, and not to insult the one who posted this, but i do hate the whole "most important ______ in world football" (club, derby, stadium). Football has become so globalized. It's a source of pride and a form of cultural expression in many nations.

To say that "______ is the most important club in the world", is so arrogant and dismissive of others. It's a small group of people stating that their football experience is so much more important and meaningful than another group's.

"The EPL is the best/most important league in the world". Go to Mexico and Colombia and you'll see that they live and die for their clubs. Couldn't care less who wins the CL.

This is the same. You'd be shocked how many people in South america have even heard of Celtic and Rangers but you constantly have Scots proclaim their derby to be the world's greatest.
IMO, Hibernian and Hearts games have been much more exciting in recent years. Watch last year's 1-1 draw at Easter Road to see what I mean.
In Uruguay, Nacional and Penarol are one of the top clubs in South America. But I don't consider their derby to be "more important". Just as I don't consider River vs. Boca to be more important than let's say Colo Colo v. Uni de Chile.

Palmeiras vs Corinthians is pretty much unworthy of that list. Really, Morumbi can receive around 70k-80k people. This game usually attracts 20-30k. If you wanna talk about a good rivalry in Brazil, talk about Internacional vs Grêmio. Even Guarani vs Ponte Preta (my local town derby) is a better game to talk about. Two small stadiums (one for 25k, another for 13k) people, two traditional teams in a bigass town (Campinas, one million people live here), and pure hate in a tight stadium. The atmosphere is unreal.

Campinas' pinky pants always think themselves so, so, so much more than they really are.

"Duh, 1 million people live here"...BIG DEAL.

A city full of yokels that pretend to be paulistanos, even in their ridiculous accents, with their ridiculous regional sports broadcasts, with ridiculous commentators and ridiculous opinions. everything about that laughable town is a theme for comedy.

Guarani x Ponte is a bigger classic to the point that make Palmeiras and Corinthians 'unworthy of the list'?

And Inter x Gremio, Guarani x Ponte are worthier because of the higher level of 'hate'?

I guess you misunderstand the concept of classics and derbies, my friend.

Inter x Gremio are pure hate because they're the ONLY TEAMS in Porto Alegre. Corinthians x Palmeiras however, stand out among other classics that happen in São Paulo and against Santos.

And check the quality background of those derbies you mentioned. Most of Guarani x Ponte matches are full of horrible plays, fights and nothing more. I can say with my mouth full of words that Corinthians x Palmeiras are bigger in every aspect of the game across its History.

Stop being such sassy envious crying girls and start playing like men. Both Guarani and Ponte are STRAIGHT OWNED by both Corinthians and Palmeiras as well as Gremio and Inter. Shut the hole up and retreat to your meaninglessness.

7) RED STAR BELGRADE v PARTIZAN BELGRADE -- Belgrade, Serbia
This is a relatively new fixture: both clubs were founded in 1945, but what they lack in age, they make up for in passion. Partizan was founded as the football section of the central club of the former Yugoslavian Army, while Red Star was founded as the civilians' club. Red Star, or Crvena Zvezda as they are now known, have traditionally been the more successful, achieving the ultimate of winning the European Cup in 1991.

Well in football case 7 yes, cause every year fight for title just these 2 clubs, but you can find everywhere in fan derbies is on 4-5 place. :coffe-anim:(Y)

I'd like to add a derby that isn't famous nowadays, but it is one the biggest derbies in Germany.
Sachsen/Chemie Leipzig - Lokomotive/VfB Leipzig.
These guys hate each other so much that they would kill each other if there wouldn't be any police. They are playing in lower divisions now, but were powerhouses in the old GDR Oberliga (VfB Leipzig also was the first German champion in 1903 btw.). There is more police presence than there is for many Bundesliga matches.

I can confirm that. I was born in Leipzig and the supporters from each side hate eachother as much as possible. People die every once in a while on derbyday. And they are no hooliganfirms. Its just pure hatred. Absolutely crazy.

Everyone knows people don't go to see Palmeiras x corinthians in the stadium because of violence. All derbies in SP are the same. That's why big team x small team attract bigger crowds.
