The Importance of Greece's win

a hell of a lot of talent there (H)

and it could do you're boys some good to learn a different way of scoring a goal. corner -> header -> goal won't always work.

Greece deserved to win the most, end of story. Who cares about how they played? They played to their STRENGTHS, much like Brazil do when they play and such. Anyone who says otherwise is just being close-minded/jealous. That being said I believe that it's not a feat that they'll repeat at the World Cup because Latvia will wipe the floor with them(H)

Youth Team
I thought this conversation had been over six months ago-we,greeks and many other neutral fans claimed it was an historic win, others criticised the greek team, maybe jealously, maybe because they just lost money from the bets, maybe because they simply wanted to underestimate the achievement or because they expected Greece to play with a crazy offensive style and get hammered from the very first game.Maybe there are other reason, who knows? I had some tough arguments during the tournament, now I really don't see the point to go on the fight.
Zagorakis was elected best player of the tournament and this is not only because Greece won. After all, football is not only elegance, juggling and delicacy,it is also heart, soul, brains, discipline and faith. Do I like this kind of game? No,I don't-that's why I have always supported Brazil, that's why I enjoyed Senegal back in 2002. But since I watch football from the age of 6(now I am 36,so you can see I have seen thousands of matches), I know it is not always supreme technique and offensive football that bring victories. I cried when Brazil lost to Italy in 1982,but when "celecao" had Socrates,Zico,Junior,Eder,Falcao, they forgot to form a decent defence.Everyone is mocking of Real Madrid for not having a decent DM,although they possess maybe the most leathal midfield and attack.Barcelona made a fantastic run last season when Davids joined them,Juve made it to CL this year after having won 5 games with a simple 1-0,Chelsea have a similar run in Premiership etc. etc. Need I say more? Football changed from the time when games were won with 5-4. And Greece was just one more team to follow the rule in the most prolific way. They didn't cheat anyone, they didn't use any "non-greek" imported player, they didn't have any kind of ambiguous referee decision-they played what they could, made the most of it,were capable of exploiting the slightest chance they had after a long tactical study on their opponents' weaknesses-thanks to Herr Otto,of course.
There will surely be other teams in the fututre to follow this style-whether they make it or not. After all, luck(not just blind luck, but exploiting chances to the best possible way) is a part of our lives, not just football. "Fortuna favi fortus" or otherwise Fortune favours the brave.

it was a historic win..... and in a way i am happy for the greeks, i generally like greece...... but their style of play really ticked me off.... i don't know whether it was the fact i was waking up here at 4am or what.... but it was just frustrating to watch

Stop moaning, Greece won the Euro and they deserved it.Every team in a big tournament does everything they can to win not to please others.Smaller or weaker sides cant afford to throw 9 men forward against footy giants, they would be killed 6-0 or something.I prefer to see my team winning 1-0 with a **** and boring game over losing 3-4 with a nice attacking-football.

Your trying to pretend you were the underdogs....wow.
In Toronto, the Portuguese were celebrating as if they were literally the best team in the world. You cant even begin to imagine the celebrations when Greece won (from many nations besides Greece too). It was almost a ferry tale ending with Spain getting a sort of Revenge (Fan who threw the Barca flag at Figo).

Hell no Portugal wasnt the underdog (playing at home too)

No, I'm not kidding, as I'm not guilty you aren't provided with good memory skills.

First of all, why are you talking to a Portuguese living in Portugal about the behaviour of some Portuguese living in Toronto? I live here; I know how the country reacted, and what was the mood before the championship. With all respect, those people don't represent our feelings towards the national team.
It is obvious to me, as I've been abroad quite a few times, that when you're living outside your country you look at stuff like home football with greater interest and passion, because they are a connection to that place you were born at... So their reaction comes as no surprise. ;)

Were we favourites to win it?
Portugal's pre-tournament games were a disaster: draws and losses to teams with little footballing expression, conflicts between Scolari and the portuguese press (who, until some point, hated him), conflicts between Scolari and Porto staff and players. It looked like a train heading at 200Km/h towards a cliff.
If you care, search the threads before the Euro and read what I and other portuguese here had to say about our chances. It's written here. Go, Forrest, go, go.

The first game against Greece
The first game and subsequent loss came as no surprise to anyone. It seemed inevitable, the logical result of all that had happened in the months before. This loss plus the poor performance of our team did nothing but confirm and even agonize the differences between Scolari and the rest of Portugal. Favourites to win the tournament? Don't think so... Up until...

The Epic versus England
I think this was probably one of the finest games ever played and definitely one of the top 5 our national team has played. Whoever won it would be a favourite to go all the way.
Before the game chances were 50% for each side: England wasn't impressing and Portugal, despite the win versus a bleak Spain, still had everything to prove. With this game everything changed. We were playing great football and the confidence levels raised to unimaginable levels before the tournament.

Spain got a sort of Revenge (Fan who threw the Barca flag at Figo)?
There's one huge mess in your head, man. Spain's revenge? Dude, that was Barça's flag!! You know, F.C. Barcelona, from Cataluña? Word of advice: if you ever go to Barcelona and happen to tell that tale to the locals, don't end with the phrase 'ahah, that was really Spain's revenge'.
To tell you the truth, most of, if not all of Spain wanted Portugal to get the title after Spain was eliminated. That was widely publicized during the second half of the tournament.

-----------------------------------------------

Mikey, I never said Greece was bad. They weren't, much on the contrary! They were fantastic. Fantastically boring, yes, but still fantastic.

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEKKKKK
:o :o :o OH THE HUMANITY OF IT ALL!! :o :o :o :o

seriously I think you guys are really overreacting.

Look at it this way, it was Greece's time, we had the best .....TEAM......not preety football, not superstar players as they are considered by the glamourous star system of Spain, Italy and Britain, in Western Europe....but we had the best TEAM, and the best TEAM will always beat the superstar, premadonna, no heart having, over payed, flashy top flight squad. (read Real Madrid)

We had the right coach
We had the right players in place
We played tought and fought for 2 years

and.....WE WON!!.....

now if another team does the same thing to us.....*cough* (Albania already did).....I'm not going to sit and b*tch and wine and cry like a little girl....

just as long as it's not the U.S.
;) (jk)
If the best team in the world plays ugly but shuts down the great offenses of Europe and the World then........THEY DESERVE THE WORLD CUP!!!

and those who stop watching football because a team that plays ugly wins ...then.....those are not "fans" that I want standing next to me in the stands. Offense wins games....Defense wins championships...it's true for for football.....as much as any other sport out there.

The goal Dellas scored against the Czech republic was beautiful and almost stopped the hearts of 10 million Greeks. Now had the Portuguese of English or French or German won in such a way we would hear.....

"OH THE BRILLIANCE OF ---------------(INSERT WESTERN EUROPEAN TEAM HERE).....IS SIMPLY BRILLIANT......WASN'T IT MARK!!!"

"OH YES JOHNNY, YOU KNOW ONLY------------- (INSERT HIGHLY PAYED PLAYER NAME HERE)--------------COULD PROVIDE SUCH A BRIIIILLIANT PERFORMANCE!!!"

"OH YES IT WAS QUITE BRILLIANT"

You know what the problem isn't the style of play but who WON and no one has the b*lls to admit that. Everyone has a problem admitting that GREECE (YES GREECE) IS THE CHAMPION FOR THE NEXT 4 YEARS!!!

It was TSIARTAS that gave the volley off the corner!!

It was DELLAS that converted the header!!!

It was KARANGOYNIS that scored the first goal against Portugal

and it was CHARISTEAS THAT FINISHED OFF BOTH FRANCE AND THE HOSTING PORTUGAL IN THEIR HOME STADIUM!!

If some other "ugly" team plays with the same hear that this squad did then I would cheer them on.

I couldn't agree with you more. That one thing was obviously skill. You don't beat teams like Portugal (twice), France and the Czech Republic without a great deal of skill.

I agree with that earlier comment about Toronto. The Portuguese people in Toronto were acting as if they had already won EURO before the 1st game against Greece and before the final game against Greece. It was absolutely fantastic to see the look on all those Porchops faces after Greece won EURO2004!

OPA!

oh you must mean kinda like this

What is really your point? Where they supposed to have the opposite reaction: cry before the game and celebrate once they had lost?

no I just wanted to post pictures of Portuguese fans crying after completely overlooking Greece as a worthy oponent. Anytime some one patronizes and puts down Greece as unworthy, I get p*ssed off. So I just wanted to give an example of how over confidant Portuguese fans were before the final......and how they finally got theirs....twice in the same competition.

well my national team has been horrible for the majority of its history and yours hasn't so I can't expect you or any one else from western europe for that matter.

Greece is always put down by some one for its football in these forums and frankly I'm tired of it. I am starting to believe that the source of this descent is not truely the football of the NT (comparible to catanazio of Italy) but directed to Greece it self. That is just sad in this day and age IMO.

nah man it's just the style of football you play. No one took Czech Republic seriously a few years ago before they started having good results, and now they are regarded as one of the best NTs in the world... because they play REALLY good football.

Everyone loves greek culture especially ancient greece... don't be a tosser.

Believe me, they do. For our clubs and NT we get abuse. Theyre still crying about the CL 2 years ago when 3 of our teams reached final 4.

@Infesta, saying that all the Portuguese on these boards werent confident:

Thats the case for everybody. Italy was the #2 favourites (i think), and yet all of us were having doubts about our crappy coach and the players he picked. Its a normal thing to have doubts and look at the negatives.
