The Importance of Greece's win

Have you guys ever thought how important Greece's win was for the entire world of football?

I had a surprisingly good conversation about that just today.

I noticed that many footbaling nations have a new sense of hope for winning major tournaments now that Greece won the EURO last year.

I have Japanese friends here who tell me that they strongly believe that Japan could even win the world cup cause "If Greece could win something as big as the EURO, why cant we win this?"

just thought it was kinda interesting and that Greece's victory over Portugual sould be looked at as a HUGE moment in the history of football.

Its sometimes compared to the Maracanazo of 1950 (In a way, this was Potugual's" Maracanazo")

But while Uruguay's win proved forever that "Brazil can be beaten", I think Greece's showed that anyone can beat anyone in the WORLD..... if you have the right tactics set for the game.
It rose Football to a whole new level passed the one that it already was at.

(kinda like fate i guess.....so Portuguese can atleast find it redeeming that they werepart of a very important moment in football history ;) :) )

I dont know....what do you guys think?

I guess that's true, now any underdog NT can play with 11 players inside their own box, with the chance of scoring in a counter attack and winning an important competition.

I don't mean to offend Greece, I'm just saying it's probably gonna be followed by weak NTs in a world scale. I don't know if you get my point.

EDIT: of course the team must have some talented players, but everybody has the right to have hope. That's what I'm talking about.

It does give the smaller counries hope, but I don't think it's enough for them to win anything.

Rochester won the US Open Cup being the first non top-flight team to win the oldest tournament in the world and I don't think it gave hope at all to anyother team, just insulted the MLS teams.

Now that did a lot for it's country. It gave everyone in Iraq something to be proud of even though they might not like the sport at all, becaase of the horrible things going on in their country it gave them something to get their minds of the problems.

it's a terrible achievement for those who like football as a spectacle. Imagine if every team copied Greek style and play with it in every major competition. I bet a lot of people would just stop watching football.

The win has encouraged more teams to use 4-5-1 formations. :kader: Iraqs wins has to be the most touching moment for me.

I think it takes more than just defensive football and putting 11 men behind the ball.. it takes lots of discipline and team play as seen by last season's Porto. I dont think just any country can be capable of this.

exactly.

I dont agree at all that Greece played the simple "11 Back and hope for a lucky counter attack" way. (See Mexico/Argentina in Copa America 04)

Greece had planned their match with Portugal to the highest level of perfection. Their defending was planned perfectly, they controlled the midfield and even went on a full attack for much of the first half. They were the better team that day.
It was after their goal that they said "****....Portugal is pissed." and went on to defense.

I found that it was thrilling to see the Greeks defend their net with their lives as the Portuguese went all out to score. Plus Greece was tired by then, it wouldnt have been a good idea to attack.

It just showed that there are ways to beat every team. Now im not saying Jamaica will be a favorite now to win the World Cup (cause of the "hope") but any small team can now challenge an "elite" and tie or beat them now.

Football is becoming more and more balanced after all.
One day the World Cup is going to have like 30 Favorites when all the continents catch up (as they pretty much already have....but need a bit more) to the European/latin americans.
(Thatll be the golden age of Football right there)

Of course if I was Portugese id be so pissed at Greece's defending that game and would never say "they played well"....but in a neutral point of view....they played great that entire EURO (Except vs. Spain......THAT was a lucky tie. :p )

In the end they scored more goals than their opponents and that's what counts.

Some of their goals were class. Charisteas' vs. France after a nice cross by Seitaridis for example.

meh maybe I'm more used to that kind of football.

Greece got the trophy and they were partying while you people were crying and saying "oh they dont know how to play football" and "all they did was defend themselves"
well, if they won, they clearly are capable of some football. and didnt you know that to defend its also a tactic?
many teams only attack and get screwed because they cant defend. others attack the necessary and defend very well.
it doesnt matter what tactics a team uses. at the end of the day its the team that knew how to use those tactics that wins the most.

sport its not a synonym of fun and a good time. if you think that way then you are one of those people who say "it doesnt matter if we won or not, what matters is that we participated" which is kinda sad imo.
sport its a synonym of fight, sweat, tears, passion, courage....and many more come to mind. you dont play a sport to entertain crowds. you play a sport to win something, and for that you gotta use your best weapons and use them wisely.

and now let me end with this...

It was Zagorakis' cross to Charisteas' head-a perfect goal indeed.I can't understand how some people think this goal is not supposed to be a nice one,or Charisteas' goal against Spain after a 60 metres pass from Tsiartas.

You watch football because it is an spectacle. If it's a good or a bad one, it depends on the day. Especially when you dont support one of the teams playing the game and still watch it. Why?

Because Football Is Entertainment, at least for us fans. Otherwise you wouldnt prevent yourself from doing other stuff just to watch that single Derby. Why? Because you want to see a good football game. You want to see a good spectacle.

And tell me the truth, when you're a neutral and you're watching a crappy game, you WILL change the channel to see if there's something better to watch (unless its Juve playing). Even if it's another football game.

I'm not questioning Greece's style of football, it doesn't matter weather they played ugly or not. They played within the rules and won. Period. (And I can't criticize it too much because the team I support is a counter-attack expert, although it's different from all defense, but well, this is a subject for another thread).

What I'm saying is that with their victory, many countries will try to copy the way they played hoping they could win as Greece did.

And a club team example is Once Caldas. Many small teams in South America will copy their play style hoping they could achieve what Once did, thinking: "if they did, why not us?". Anyway, it's really hard to see a small team attacking a big team, so it won't change that much the world soccer scenario.

Iraq's win was way more touching in every reason you can possibly imagine. Hell, I was a happy man when they beat us! They were better and fully deserved it.

As for Greece, I already wrote here they were the better team on the final match.
However, Portugal were also underdogs for much of the tournament, so if we had won it would have had the same meaning - this is where your point fails, pasion1 - but with one HUGE difference: the sense that good, positive, offensive football can win games.
I still believe teams that play well can go all the way. Brazil tought me that in the 60's, 70's and 80's and I'm sticking to it!
