The tournament was such a success that the ICC decided to have more games and more teams to maximise television revenue. Now we're left with the situation where there are two relatively even teams and one minnow in each group, so the match between the two seeded sides effectively becomes a quarter-final. Another reason for the expansion could be that the ICC wants to give the non-ODI members more exposure at major tournaments and hence boost the sport's popularity. However, I think having 3 ICC Trophy qualifiers at the World Cup is enough, and the Champions' Trophy should just be held between the Test nations and perhaps Kenya, like it was in 2000.

what a game last night!
307 from the poms

i saw it at 83 for 2 when India was batting but i went to sleep (H) 1 am at that time (H)

Nothing beats the VB series

If you manage to win it then that is 2nd to the world cup.

I still think it should be called the World Series like it used to be called. ie VB World Series.

Personally I'd like it to return to the knockout format, as that is what set it apart from other ODI tournaments, sort of like how the UEFA Cup differs from the Champions' League.
the uefa cup has a group phase now;)
and i meant that the world cup is the one you really want to win, the Champ. Trophy is important but no where near as much, and as for the VB series, its good but its only between 3 team so it doesnt really count.

India played the best cricket last summer and the Aussies had to play catch up all the time :o

Good tight game that. Congratulations to Pakistan on a close victory.

Our batting still seems to be a worry, as apart from Dravid, Agarkar(:|) and to a certain extent Kaif, no one else has seemed even close to being comfortable at the crease. VVS Laxman looked good for a while before throwing his wicket away with a loose shot. Sehwag didn't look anything like his old self, and some serious thinking needs to be done ahead of the Test series against Australia. Six months ago, when Ganguly suggested Sehwag and Yuvraj should open the innings in Test matches, it seemed a decent idea putting out two aggressive batsmen on helpful pitches. However, considering the form both of them are in, I'd be inclined to stick with Aakash Chopra at the top of the order. There's too much talent in this batting lineup for it not to fire at some stage in the next month, and we should still be in for a very good series against the Aussies.

The bowlers did a good job given the circumstances, and Irfan Pathan was magnificent in his opening spell. He probably deserved to take another 2 or 3 wickets in those seven overs IMO, and had Yasir Hameed in knots by the time he ended his miserable stay at the crease. He's a fantastic prospect for the future if he stays clear of injuries and continues to work as hard as he has in his first season in international cricket. Harbhajan Singh, Ajit Agarkar and Ashish Nehra provided decent support for Irfan, though I can't help but wonder if another prodigious swinger of the ball such as Balaji, or a bowler with genuine pace, such as Zaheer Khan when fit, would have given us that extra penetrative edge. Ajit Agarkar and Ashish Nehra are capable of bowling over 140 km/h, and Nehra has actually clocked 149 km/h at one stage, but neither is able to do it consistently nor are they able to retain their control when they do decide to crank it up.

That's the Champions' Trophy over for us now, but there are some positives to be taken from this game, especially the form of Dravid and Irfan. The others need to raise their games in order to compete with the Aussies next month, but I have a feeling that it is starting to come together and we're in for an interesting month of cricket. Good luck to Australia and the West Indies for the semis:p.

this match showed that India depend on Tendulkar for scoring runs... It looks like they are not confident.. But what happened to india, they were storming and crushing teams before...

I think most of our credit goes to Bob Woolmer for his coaching... Pakistan's fielding has showed great sign of improvement..Their bowling is superb like always.. but once again, our batting relies on inzamam and youhana for getting us back in the match, afridi's runs were very very important in my opinion, 25 from 12 in a crucial moment.. Farhat should go out, he isnt doing good anymore, he needs his form back.. By the way what happened to Imran Nazir?? he was doign soo good yet they take him out...

Pakistan and England will go to the finals.. I hope.. Paki will take it from there

That is perhaps only a half-truth, if you ask me. Sachin is a great player and we are obviously stronger with him than without him, but the batting lineup is still good enough to put up large, or at least competitive, totals against any bowling attack. Even without Sachin, we have Dravid, Laxman, Kaif and Yuvraj who can be relied on to post large totals. At the moment though we only have two batsmen in form - Dravid and Kaif. Laxman looked to me like he was seeing the ball pretty well yesterday until he got out, and he has struggled for runs in ODIs this year. He is a great batsman to watch though and hopefully he rediscovers his form against Australia.

On a side note, England won't make the final;).
