Ahhh, Carling. Another of the tasteless British lagers rebranded with a foreign name from a country more synonymous with lager.

Just like the Fosters, Carlsberg, Kronenberg, Stella and XXXX sold in England it's actually a completely different beer to the brand back in it's home country.

Interesting side is that this was done way back when lager was first getting popular in the UK. As the UK was never a lager drinking country, and always drank ale ("real" as they call hand pumped, or other ales), they needed brands to sell them under. So marketing types got popular lager brands from around the world, to label lagers tailored to British taste.

The lagers above are the end result. Then you end up with Fosters in England being a 4% seasonable lager, in Australia it's a 5% (and not very popular any more) premium lager. Carlsberg in it's native Denmark is a 5% premium, in the UK a crappy mid strength easy drinking 3.8% lager.

Causes confusion in the rest of the world when poms say they drink one of those beers, as it's not actually what they're drinking. They're drinking a British lager invented in the 80s (or thereabouts) with a foreign label slapped on it.

Why am I saying this? Because I'm sure other people will read the post and think "I drink xyx brand too" yet if they're in the UK, it's a totally different drink being discussed. At least in other countries when things are made locally, they're made under license to the official recipe. It doesn't always taste identical, but is at least essentially the same drink.

Now, what do I drink.

I love gin. I drink martinis (T10 being my favourite martini gin), white ladies (aka. Chelsea sidecar), and occasionally gin and tonic. I also love amaretto sours, and a good whiskey/whisky on ice (real whisky, not sour mash crap which is essentially bourbon). I generally prefer Irish, as I find Scotch a little harsh still, but still appreciate a nice Scotch.

When I'm out I generally drink loads of beer. I love a nice lager in the summer (or if I'm having a few!!) otherwise I like malty ales-Amber Ales, Brown Ales, Dark Ales and even Porters and sweeter Stouts. I think Pale Ale is the world's most overrated beer category, and if you want something easy drinking, you should drink lager. If you want an ale, drink something decent, not a bloody pale, hoppy piece of crap. And I hate India Pale Ales even more than pale ales.

If I'm out on the town I don't mind a vodka red bull after a few beers, but generally don't like sweet drinks. I'd rather a Scotch and dry, vodka lime and soda etc. Drinks with a bit if a bite and some bitterness to keep me drinking.

The same thing happens in most countries, it's not just the UK. Even with production being made under license, it often tastes nothing like the original stuff. A couple of years ago I passed through Italy, drank a lot of Peroni there and loved it.. came back over here and it's like piss compared to its italian counterpart.

Anyway, I'm a huge Vodka fan. And this here is responsible for most of my ****ed up crazy nights:

I had Stella in Canada and in Romania and huuuge difference. Fresh food is better in Romania but the beer is sh*t.

I've been mocked for my "girly" taste in alcohol - I don't think it's girly, I think it's classy. Flavored beers, ciders FTW! Watermelon vodka and chilli vodka, **** yeah!

Also tequila and everything tequila-related (tequila beer cocktails!!!), whiskey. But the most important drink ever - Cuba Libre!

Worst alcohol-related expirience - waking up on the floor after a night of drinking at friend's flat. Horrible hangover (don't get them too often), seeing a glass of water on a table, reaching my hand toward my saviour...quickly drinking it all up - vodka, mother******* vodka. Outcome - a trail of vomit from the room to the toilet.

Tequila... yuck! It says something that too swallow it you first got to numb your taste-buds by sucking on a lemon and than licking salt afterwards. I can only drink it when I'm already very drunk and don't really care anyway.

My preference goes to good old fashioned beer (Grolsch, Heineken, Brand!). As far as the stronger stuff goes I like vodka, bacardi (baco!) and gin(-tonic!) mostly. Oh and the Spanish have this amazing sweet alcoholic drink. I believe it's called Quaranta y Tres.

Generally beer, Becks being my favorite. I tend to mix my own stuff out of what I have around the house, I generally prefer fruity/sweet tastes, and I have Pear, Banana, Melon, Watermelon, Creme de Cassis, Blue Curaçao and some other liqeuers I can't remember. Nomally mixed with vodka, or maybe Rum, or the huge JB bottle we have that no one likes so I just use it from time to time.

Also tequila, although that normally comes with the understanding that you're trying to get drunk, and I've sort of left that behind, although I'll still keep a bottle of it around the house.

And, my favorite alcoholic beverage, Jagermeister. Whether mixed or pure, I love it. Sometimes I'll put a shot glass of it inside a beer glass, a la submarine, and that's a pretty fine drink.

Honestly, I don't drink that much anymore. Two of my best friends don't ever drink so the group tends to drink less.

Chilli vodka? :confused2: I'm curious to try it out. Just saw some youtube videos on how to make it. I have the ingredients but I'm kinda worried I'll ruin a perfectly good bottle of vodka. So, is it any good?

Made under license are often different because of the malt available, or the water used. But they're the same style beer. In the UK, they're 100% not related except for the label.

Like me Shifty. I love a good rich English brown ale.

Nothing beats Sam Smith old brewery bitter, hand pulled from an oak cask.

I'm a bit if an alcohol hobbyist. I did beer tasting for a couple of years, and have loads of books on the stuff. Also have over a hundred bottles of spirits/liqueurs and over fifty bottles if decent red wine.

That's not to mention my beer collection, cider (especially pear cider) collection and home brew.

I for the life of me can't drink beer. Long story... but anytime I try to drink beer my stomach churns and I immediately feel nauseous.

My drink of choice is usually club soda with vodka, although it looks like I've lost my tolerance, because I've been getting some bad hangovers.

i'm mostly into beer these days, because hard liquor is really expensive out here.
I would prefer vodka or gin if it were at a more reasonable price. Rum as well.

I do want to try the Avion tequila, not a big fan of tequila but it was a big factor in the last Entourage season so I feel I have to

Make America Great Again
In the States we generally think of vodka as a woman's drink, and almost everyone I knows shoots Jameson and Powers almost exclusively for liquor. I don't, so I'm glad that at least on SG I'm more man than other drinkers.

Nah, I haven't tried the DIY version yet. I've only bought the ones they sell here:

The only thing I've tried to do myself is kilju (Jaboldinho should know what I'm talking about). Probably the worst thing I've ever drank, lol.

The rules of alcohol are very simple.

Beer during the day.

Wine with your lunch and dinner.

Cognac or calvados with your cheese.

Port with your cigar.

Whiskey in the evening.

I like both bourbon and scotch - though I am not so keen on blended scotch, even the good ones, just single malts. Scotch with water, bourbon with ice.

ALL drinks involving cola, red bull, fruit juice etc and anything like that are criminal.

I may have a gin martini or a GT from time to time.
