Go Dockers! :D

I don't think we've ever had this great start in the club's history.

Big derby this week, but I reckon we can improve our record to 5-1 (H)

maybe thats a bit harsh :crazyboy:

if it wasn't for wayne Carlos*son the AFL wouldn't be the number 1 sport in australia

the AFL wouldn't be so even

teams like Buldogs , North melbourne and melbourne may not be around because the are so poor ...

wayne Carlos*son was the best CEO the AFL has ever had i met demetriou about 3 weeks ago and he's a dickhead

I do. You have to remember Victoria has had an extra 90 years to devlop there footballing culture. They don't get extra money in the way you put forward like the Bulldogs, Kangas and Demons do they get salary cap consessions.

Fair enough also, it cost's more to move a player interstate, settle him there and you also have to deal with the homesickness factor, etc.

The only club that deserves the salary cap consessions to the level they are given is Sydney because lets face it, it cost more to live there than in any other city in Australia.

yeh, but an interstate team almost has a monopoly on the football supporters in that state, and gets more members

and the costs of moving a player out to a state, other that sydney, can be accounted for with the lower living costs and inturn lower payed contracts

also, plenty of players dont need to move at all, and wat about 10 victorian clubs who need to bring accomodate moving and settling players from another sate

maybe in the past concessions were an option, but only teams that have an excuse now is sydney
last 12 seasons= 7 interstate premierships, i think the extra money can finish now

Wayne was a dickhead, but relative to Oakley, he was a bloody saint.

The blokes who I go to the footy with used to start every match off with a rousing reception, one bloke would go:

"Don't you forget, Carlos*son" and everyone replies

"WE HATE YOU, WAYNE!"

It was very cathartic.

All the clubs agreed to the salary cap's ... even Collingwood. If St Kilda is defeated by Brisbane in the Grand Final by 3 points, it won't be because of Brisbane being handed 'extra' money, it's because they're the better team. You play with what you're given, and you accept it unless there is justifiable reason to change it. Brisbane & Sydney still produce less players than the other states, and because players often want to go home, this disadvantages them in a major way.

Please note. The salary concession applies to all Clubs that have a certain percetage of players from Interstate.

The concessions does not only apply to Sydney and Brisbane, it is just that they are in use of it at the moment because their player list is mostly from Interstate.

The big 3 states that are Footy states. Vic, SA, WA. Now if you were drafted by Brisbane and Sydney isn't that a culture shock? Let alone the cost of moving? Please keep in mind that Brisbane have the 'Broncos' Rugby League Team and the Union Team 'The REDS' to compete against for people, and Sydney have 10 Rugby League teams in RUGBY States not AFL States.

Just get over it Eddie

April 18, 2004

When I retire from AFL football, there will be one thing missing. I won't have lived in Melbourne. I won't have experienced life in football's Mecca. I'll regret that forever.

Several times I've been sorely tempted. Not for any reason other than curiosity. I think I know what it would be like, living in a city where football is just about the be-all and end-all, but I'll never know. It was never going to happen. Because Melbourne isn't home.

Just like Brisbane isn't home to most Brisbane Lions players. Not now, and not in the foreseeable future.

So, we will forever have a problem with homesickness.

What's this all about? It's the other side to what is a pretty tedious contention. The one about the Lions' salary cap allowance. A retention allowance to help combat homesickness.

I don't expect many Melbourne people to agree, but I'm so sick of hearing about it I feel obliged to try to balance the ledger. To explain why the retention allowance doesn't create an uneven playing field, and in fact serves only to help even up the playing field.

In the past few years the Lions have lost four top-10 draft picks to the "go home" factor: Nathan Chapman (No. 2 pick in 1992), Rory Hilton (No. 3 pick in 1996), Shane O'Bree (No. 10 pick in 1997) and Des Headland (No. 1 pick in 1998). Plus, John Barker and Jarrod Molloy.

Why? Because they were homesick. There have been others, too, who have overcome the urge to go home. Like Chris Johnson, who only last week told how he "hated" Brisbane for a couple of years.

Just think about it. When you're doing it a bit tough and need a shoulder to lean on, where do you go? Family. Every time. But it's a bit hard if your family is 2000 kilometres away.

You feel a pressure to be there. You want to be there. But you can't be there. Because your job demands that you be somewhere else.

This is an issue for the Lions every day. Being able to pay a little extra money to keep homesick players in Brisbane is only a small part of the solution. The rest is hard work.

Sure, we've managed to keep the playing group together recently. But that's more to do with pay cuts, contract restructuring and player sacrifices.

Rival clubs have targeted Brisbane, looking to exploit the "go home" factor.Or, as Leigh Matthews calls it, an investment in the team in the hope of an extra special dividend. A determination among the group to ride the journey of success to its very end, and not to be the one who lets his mates down by breaking the bond.

It would take forever to examine each "go home" case. Briefly, for Hilton we got Adam Heuskes and Martin McKinnon. For O'Bree we got nothing. For Headland, after taking a strong stance, we got Blake Caracella and ultimately Jared Brennan.

For Barker and Chapman (yes, the NFL's new punt kicker), we got Brad Scott. For Molloy we got Mal Michael and ultimately Richard Hadley. It doesn't matter whether we won or lost. The fact is our hand was forced every time by players wanting to go home.

Rival clubs have targeted Brisbane, looking to exploit the "go home" factor.

Simon Black is another example. A West Coast fanatic as a kid, the Eagles tried to lure him back to Perth. Had his parents not moved to Brisbane, he might have gone.

If you want to ask anyone whether football life in Brisbane is different, ask Blacky. He is perhaps the most decorated 25-year-old in AFL history. A Brownlow Medal, a Norm Smith Medal, three premiership medals, two best and fairests in a premiership team, and a close second last year.

In Melbourne, Adelaide or Perth sponsors would be knocking him over. Yet in Brisbane he's got an apparel deal with Puma and a small endorsement from Sanyo. Nothing else.

Any extra money he may be paid under the allowance is only evening things up. Nick Riewoldt hasn't had any trouble settling into Melbourne, and is showing no signs of coming home to Queensland. Just like Jason Dunstall and Gavin Crosisca and Clint Bizzell.

Yet we've had trouble getting players to Brisbane. Like Chris Heffernan, the first player approached in the Headland trade. He refused to move. Like Matthew Primus, who was tied to the Lions after the Brisbane-Fitzroy merger. He wouldn't come.

The allowance isn't new, yet I didn't hear anyone complaining when the Lions won the wooden-spoon in 1998. I find it odd that the two clubs leading the charge happen to be the clubs we have beaten in the past three grand finals.

Football isn't a level playing field. We don't play each other twice. We don't all travel 11 times. We don't all play in the Anzac Day blockbuster. And we don't all play 18 games a year in Melbourne.

So, we have an independent AFL Commission whose job it is to decide what is fair and right. What is good for football. If they think it's reasonable for an AFL team in a non-traditional football state to have a small and reducing salary cap allowance, I say to the critics: "Get over it".

Frankly, I'm surprised Mick Malthouse or Kevin Sheedy haven't stopped it, because every time their clubs whinge about it, they are, in effect, creating an excuse for their players. A crutch that implies the only reason they didn't win was the salary cap allowance.

I've lived 17 years in Queensland - 12 years at the Lions - and I've seen it and experienced it. Believe me, the "go-home" is a real problem. Not just for the Lions, but for Australian football.

Sheedy was about to draft Angwin but didn't and Carlton got him.

Another bullet dodged by Sheedy.
