The Socceroos have been rated as one of the two weakest sides at next year's World Cup by United States head coach Bruce Arena.

Despite Australia having beaten world No.18 Uruguay to qualify, Arena considered Australia and Trinidad & Tobago to be the easiest sides to beat in the quadrennial event starting next June.

World No.49 Australia is ranked higher than four other sides at the World Cup finals in Germany next year, with Ghana (50), Trinidad and Tobago (51), Togo (56) and Angola (62) all trailing.

"The last time around the easy games were China and Saudi Arabia," Arena said on the Sports Illustrated website.

"This time around you'd probably say Australia and Trinidad & Tobago are the weak ones."

"But Australia has basically all of its players in Europe, and Trinidad have a guy (in Dwight Yorke) who was arguably the top striker in soccer."

Arena has guided the United States to the quarter-finals at the 2002 World Cup and to eighth spot in the world rankings.

Well, when is the last time you qualifyed? He has a point.

He said they were a weak team in terms of world cup teams. It's not like he said "OMG THEY IS THE SUK, LIEK WORSE THAN GUAM!!!! LOL!!!"

EDIT: doesnt it bother any of the americans that your coach has no ******* idea about world football... i mean ****, his "superstar" donovan couldnt even crack europe.... we've got the euro champion's number seven :boohoo: oh and the best coach in the world ..... maybe he could have included his own team in that list too :jambo:

All of the Australia fans I've seen have been of the "happy to be there" mentality. To me that seems like they're conceding before stepping onto the pitch in a way. I would think a team that's just happy to be there would be weaker than a team expected to make some noise, why is that wrong? Australia's best players aren't really all that good with who, Kewell, Bresciano, Schwartzer, and Viduka? I'm not writing them off, but I'm not scared of them either.

T&T are certainly the worst though; Dwight Yorke is their best player? Ugh.

By the way, doesn't it suck that South Africa didn't qualify? How sweet would an England, USA, Australia, South Africa group have been?

only american say soccer as football but for the whole world... we use football as the 'standard words' for the beautiful game. :jambo:

Football is the (British) English word for the sport. It's calcio in Italian, nogomet in Croatian, fodbold in Danish and so on. Shut up and move on.

Not only do I think we'd beat Uruguay (also in 2002 the year we went to the Quarter Finals, something that Australia has done how many times?), but I don't think it would be close. And Donovan didn't have a problem cracking Europe, he's had a problem settling in Europe away from the person he has sex with (his sister), which is understandable for someone so devoted to incest. All of that must be true. But then again, just overlook other Americans like Reyna, O'Brien, Bocanegra, McBride, Beasley, and others.

Yeah exactly, so what's the problem? The only justifiable problem I see would be if you are confusing soccer for something else. Otherwise you're just a retard who despite knowing Americans say soccer feels the need to make a case about it.
