Should a 0-0 tie be given 0 points?

A 0-0 draw can be beautiful. If two teams play great, with very good defensive organisation, why wouldnt they deserve 1 point?

Agreed. And even if they don't score doesn't mean there wasn't attacking football. For instance one of the best matches I've watched of Benfica this season was against Boavista, with great attacking plays (3 or 4 balls to the posts) and yet it ended goalless.

This type of rule is just begging for collusion and match fixing.

We're into stoppage time in a 0-0 game between Team A and Team B. All of a sudden, Team A's defenders allow Team B's forward to waltz his way towards the goal and score. Team B returns the favor. Game ends 1-1, and both teams earn a point. It would make a mockery of the game.

Stupid idea. Picture this: In leagues all over the world, every time a match starts, both teams let each other score once so that they both ensure they don't finish the game without points. Then, with the score at 1-1, the game really begins...

Bad idea.

Goals are counted for 2 legged matches because it's the best way to tell who was better over the two legs. In a league it's different. You have more than two teams, and can't put them all on the pitch at the same time playing the same match.

Well why would the other team want to concede a goal when up by 1 if they could end up winning and get 3points. And thats really sad for football if teams would do that just to earn 1 point.:nape: Anyways I see what you guys are trying to say, but also if both teams needed a tie to go through then they would just let each other score once but its still better than wastinig a whole 90min to play a scoreless match so both can advance.

If that point meant they both advanced, or that both avoided relegation, I'd be very surprised if it didn't happen.

The problem is not 1-1 or 0-0 though. It's the lack of will to win the match. It'd be as boring to watch a fixed 2-2 as it'd be watching a fixed 0-0.

if 0-0 nets each team 0 points, and 1-1 nets each team 1 point what's stopping teams from a 5-5?

...if the plan is to curtail boring defensivism by penalizing teams when they fail to score a goal, what about giving only two points for 1 - 0 winners if the goal is scored before the 30min mark? It would surely clamp down those teams that score some dam lucky goal and just keep waiting back doing nothing...

Seriously, the idea is terible. There is some correlations between number of goals and qualty of game, but there are exceptions; and defending is an integral part of the game. Not to say losing the point on 0 - 0 draws would be unfair to small clubs when they play stronger opposition.

The 0-0 draw being worthless idea is incredibly stupid for a whole host of reasons, which I see little point in discussing. Only a blunt tool would consider it for more than a matter of seconds.

I think they have to accept a draw is a draw, regardless of how entertaining it is. If they wanted to have more goals in general scored surely the way to go would be rewarding teams that win by a greater margin. So a 3 goal margin victory could be worth 4 points, or some points bonus relating to goal difference. I'm not saying I'd agree with that either, but it's less obviously retarded.

But 0-0 matches are DEFINITELY boring. You watched 90 minutes of NOTHING. A single goal can change a match in so many ways. I hate 0-0 matches so i would like to see if those matches would bring 0 points to both teams. if you don't score you can't expect to get a point. if israel playws 0-0 against italy, italy won't get a point, too, so israel didn't do it for nothing.
