My substitute selection strategy has largely been inspired as contingency plan against the not improbable scenario that England get knocked out very early - coman for sterling, Motta for alli and origi for Kane

Why would you pick a guy that is improbable to make it in the later rounds? Secondly, his team isn't that great so he won't be getting a crazy amount of goals to make up for it.

Exactly - there are only about 30 super star names in this tournament and only 15-20 of those start for teams likely to penetrate deep into the later rounds (quarters or better) so not selecting one of those with first pick is nuts

Alcantara is a defender according to Whoscored. This is ridiculous but I will use that to my advantage (Like Xaviesta did) by selecting a 3rd midfielder (Barkley) because Alcantara is my central defender.
