Question for the Brits.

I will be moving to UK next year and I am going to need to get a job to survive there, my parents are going to pay for my college fees and I will need to take care of the other expenses myself.

So I was wondering, what is the minimum wage I can possibly get working as some sales assistant or something like that? I will be 18 next year.

I also need to know, how much would it cost to rent a room/apartment? Initially I had I planned to leave this year and go live with a host family but now I may be going with a friend so we are planning on renting a flat together. So that kinda messed up my financial plans.

Please please please don't give me false hopes and tell me I've got chances of getting a job worth 10 pounds p/hour cus this is practically going to determine my future! Thanks in advance.

Edit: Just re-read my post and I don't even know what I'm talking about. Sorry for my poor explanation, started this post before tea and finished it after. :amika:

What city do you move to? I know prices for rooms or flats in London are out of this world, and you would never make enough money to pay the rent, let alone other personal expences... Can't you go live on campus, if you're going to a uni?

Well, thanks to the inflated housing markets, you can expect to be bled dry by harsh landlords. You wouldn't beleive how much **** student accomadation will put you through.

You'll end up sharing a flat with 5 shifty people. Oh, and the security for the place will be non-existent, if my sister's experiences are anything to go by,

Accomadation was about 90 pounds per week with a host family if I remember correctly. Now I probably won't be living with a host family, instead I will probably be renting a place with a friend so I just wanted to know about how much will it cost me..

enigma, I'm sure (at least for Scotland anyway) that you can take a test which would make tuition fees free - you would have to pay a £2000 'Graduation Tax' at the end though.

National Minimum Wage: An Introduction

An employer must pay their employees a minimum amount as defined by law. This is called the National Minimum wage.

There are three levels of minimum wage:

* £4.85 per hour for workers aged 22 years and older.
* A development rate of £4.10 per hour for
o workers aged 18 - 21 years inclusive
o workers aged 22 years and above, starting a new job with a new employer and doing accredited training*
* £3.00 per hour which applies to all 16 year olds who are no longer of compulsory school age**, and 17 year olds.

*Accredited training is a course approved by the UK Government to obtain a vocational qualification.

**Compulsory School age

In England and Wales: a person is no longer of compulsory school age after the last Friday of June of the school year in which their 16th birthday occurs.

In Scotland: pupils whose 16th birthday falls between 1 March and 30 September may not leave before the 31 May of that year. Pupils aged 16 on or between 1 October and the last day of February may not leave until the start of the Christmas holidays in that school year.

In Northern Ireland: a person is no longer of compulsory school age after the 30th June of the school year in which their 16th birthday occurs.

meh, you should be ok to get a university rented flat in Brighton for about £60-70p/week. As for jobs, as long as you arnt totally thick and are good in interviews ( with a bit of luck) then you should be able to get a job at £4.50 + an hour easily. :)

Im in my first year at uni so feel free to ask any questions.

TROD.
