Paul Scholes retires from international football.

It's a shame that Scholes rarely impressed for England on big stages, which I think is due to the misuse of his talent. He's the best English midfielder before the emergence of Lampard.

If only England had built a team around Scholes, I bet England would have done much better...Blame you Sven!!

I just don't understand players that retire from international football early. I mean playing for your country is the top of the mountain, it's what all players should see as the top achievement and honour when playing football. The only time I think a player should retire is when he is left out of the team, this is how things were back in the old days.

Now it seems as though clubs come first and country second, which is a shame in my opinion. Good luck to Scholes, but I just don't understand how a player that's not even 30 can give up playing for his country.

Even after two years' goal drought, he still have 14 goals in 66 games under his belt, so that's about 1 goal in every 5 games, a very good record for a midfielder.

He ain`t IMO . . . Sure he got the temper and the determination but he ain`t got that leadership charisma yet. If England wanna have a new captain it should be Campbell or Lampard with Gary Neville as the deputy.

I think we should play Welsh at DMC, assuming he makes the first team breakthrough this season

For the next few qualifiers, I say play Butt in defensive mid, and have Gerrard and Lampard as roamers, but Gerrard with a slightly more defensive role than Lampard. Throw Beckham away and put in Milner on the right too:
