It's not done yet, but I guess they will do it soon. Luque is keen to make the move and the amount of money is tempting our president.

he was 7.5 mil pounds, hes been an undoubted talent when hes played back in portugal and for portugal, but he just struggled to adapt to life in the premier league... its disappointing cos i wish he would/could have a 2nd crack at the premiership, but hes intent on leaving, so freddy is doing evrything he can to let him go

Surely they should have moved earlier, it's going to be impossible to get a top striker now that there will be no European football at St. James'.

I say if they go winless in the first 4 games, Souness gets the sack.
Winless in 3 now :boohoo:

Magpies agree Owen fee

Newcastle United have agreed a club record fee with Real Madrid for England striker Michael Owen.

The Magpies are determined to bring the former Liverpool forward to St James' Park even though he has expressed a preference for returning to Anfield.

Owen has indicated he would only join Newcastle on loan but The Magpies have agreed terms with Real, a club they are used to doing business with after selling Jonathan Woodgate to the Spanish giants.

The striker seems certain to move on from the Bernabeu this summer, following crunch talks with Real president Florentino Perez on Tuesday, and he admitted it would likely be a straight fight between Liverpool and Newcastle for his signature.

The England forward suggested his preferred choice was to head to Liverpool, adding he would only consider a loan move to St James' Park in what is a World Cup year.

However, these comments have not deterred Newcastle who have announced they have agreed a club-record fee with Real for the striker.

"Newcastle United have met Real Madrid's asking price and conditions," a statement on the club's website read.

"The agreed fee will be a record transfer fee for Newcastle United.

"It is now up to the player and his advisor."

Much will now depend on whether Magpies chief Graeme Souness can persuade the 25-year-old to pledge his future to Newcastle.

Owen's prowess in front of goal would give Newcastle a huge fillip, as they have yet to replace departed pair Craig Bellamy and Patrick Kluivert and are reliant on Alan Shearer, who is the current club-record signing at £15 million, ploughing a lone furrow in attack.

However, he has indicated that he is not keen on making a permanent switch to the North East and the offer from Tyneside could flush out other interested parties - with Arsenal, Manchester United and Everton all linked with the speedy forward.

Meanwhile, fresh reports emanating from Turkey suggest Nicolas Anelka is considering leaving Fenerbahce.

Newcastle have been tracking the Frenchman all summer and have already had one bid rejected by Fenerbahce.

However, news emanating from Turkey suggests Anelka is considering his future at Fenerbahce.

It is believed that officials from both clubs met in Germany to discuss a possible move and should Newcastle fail to land Owen they could step up their pursuit of Anelka.

i dont see it happening still.... for owen's sake, i think a year loan would b good, but i honestly dont think he should move here permanently, cos i dont think our club has established itself yet, as a club he should b at... :boohoo: :nape:

I think it's funny how Newcastle thinks they have any chances at securing Owen on a permanent deal. If I were Owen, I'd on my knees pleading for a 1-year loan move to Bolton. Not only are they in Europe, but they could def. use him, and Allardyce is 10x the manager Souness will ever be.

Damned Right! if Owen's coming to the Premiership for a season loan, Bolton is the club he should be looking at... with JJ, Nakata, Stelios (for the time being) and Nolan in the middle of the park, he'd get balls to run at goal with... keeping himself in good nick for the WC!

Souness is garbage....I dont see how they havent sacked him yet.... He did nothing for Blackburn. Im pretty sure they would have been relegated if he stayed with them.... Thier new manager has turned things around over there... And now Souness cant do Carlos with Newcastle..... If they really want to turn things around over there NOW is the time to sack.

FIVER LETTERS-From the Guardian UK web site

"After Michael Owen's recent remarks, what self-respecting Newcastle Comedy Club fan or manager would want him? 'I suppose I'll play for them to get into the England team - I really don't want to stay after the next World Cup though.' How about he just turns out in Real Madrid colours?" - Dom Sykes, [massively overestimating levels of self-respect on Tyneside].

You know, those guys really love thrashing your team just because the manager is a loon and the chairman is a poser who barely ever makes a good decision. But I respect Newcastle because they bid for proven players instead of just talking about them, I wish Chelsea would do that-make an outright bid for a player the want like F Torres.

Treble is right: Newcastle and Sheppard, despite the pickle they now find themselves in will spend because they have it, and they have it because of the loyalty of their fan base. The Kluivert signing last year couldve been a coup had he been half the player he was in La Liga. On the other hand, after they shipped Bellend's worthless ass out the door in the winter window, I wonder what made them hold onto Bowyer who is just as much of a bitch, in my mind. Anyway, I have the biggest respect for newcastle. When the board and Shepard say they will spend money in areas of need, they go out and chase the big names, rather than him and haw and make some signing to appease fans.

Its all down to the fans, too. The toon army has to be one of the most recently maligned but consistently supportive fan bases in England. Then again, spurs have gotten themselves turned around, so its probably only a matter of time and good manager that lets newcastle do the same.

By the way, Treble, you cant say that about Chelsea. When they want someone, they go out and get them but I just dont think Torres was in the gameplan, or else he would be wearing blue today. Patience though, Crespo needs a replacement ;)

Edit: good news for the barcodes:

Albert Luque will arrive at Newcastle United on Friday for a medical, after a fee in the region of £10 million was agreed with Deportivo La Coruna.

Agent Francis Martin exclusively told skysports.com that an accord had been reached over the player and that he would seal a move to The Premiership this week.

"Tomorrow [Friday] morning, Newcastle will send a plane for Luque and his father," said Martin.

"We are confident that the player will pass the medical and sign a contract."

Luque himself expressed his delight at the chance of playing in England, saying: "I am happy that a deal has been done.

So now that you have at least one forward set to join, you probably gain alot more leverage in the Owen and Anelka negociations, though, personally, I think Anelka is a complete :fool:

Kindwords, BlueBalla.

Generally we're a very loyal bunch but i know the faithful's patience is being tested to the limit. Being a big club comes with big expectations which aren't being delivered by the team, manager and chairmen alike.

Souness getting the sack? We'll have to wait and see. It all depends whether we can secure the services of Owen or Luque.

It's easy to jump on the sack the manager band wagon but if you look at the wider perspective just who in their right mind would want to succeed him?

There are managers who would be delighted to work with players like Jenas, Dyer and Shearer. Luque looks to be signed on Friday, I hope he doesn't make the match on Sunday.

Luque at Newcastle? Wow, I didn't see that coming. Anywayz you guys should really think about sacking Souness and tempting Cuper to quit Mallorca. That way you'll get back to being a competitive side with the big boys, but you'll never win anything. Atleast you'll be competing. :jap: :P

Luque completes Newcastle switch

Newcastle have signed Deportivo La Coruna striker Albert Luque for £9.5m after he passed a medical on Friday.

The 27-year-old, who has agreed a five-year deal, could make his debut on Sunday against Manchester United if international clearance comes through.

He told the club's website: "I'm very happy. I am looking forward to playing with Alan Shearer

"I'm excited. It's a great place to play. I'm looking forward to playing in front of the Newcastle fans."

Newcastle have failed to score in their opening three games of the Premiership season but Magpies boss Graeme Souness believes Luque can solve the problem.

"He will bring a number of goals and he will bring us a bit of width if we choose to play him on the left side," Souness added.

"He is naturally left-footed and he is a wonderful striker of the ball. He will give us the little bit of class we have been missing in that area."

Newcastle looked to have missed out on the player earlier in the week after a "final" offer was rejected.

But Deportivo president Augusto Cesar Lendoiro said: "The financial conditions are very different to those that had originally been offered."

The Spain international grew up in Barcelona and was taken on by his home-town club as a youngster, before then-coach Louis van Gaal rejected him as a 19-year-old.

He joined Mallorca, but after a handful of games they loaned him to Malaga, where a better showing in 1999-2000 persuaded Mallorca to take him back.

The following season Luque scored nine goals as Mallorca finished third, giving them a place in the Champions League qualifiers for the first time ever. It was his extra-time goal against Hajduk Split in the 2001 qualifier that put Mallorca into the group stages.

The following season 14 La Liga goals earned him a place in Spain's squad for the 2002 World Cup - where he made two substitute's appearances.

At the start of 2002-2003 Depor decided he was worth splashing out £10m on, but he spent his first season there mainly on the bench.

The following campaign, however, playing mainly on the left-wing, he scored the goals which put Depor in the Champions League and also earned him a spot in Spain's Euro 2004 party.

Despite signing Luque, Newcastle are still in the £17m chase for Real Madrid's England striker Michael Owen.

True enough, man. I hate to rip on Souness too, but like you mention, how does one replace him? In any event, I was glad to see he laid down the law with a piece of dirt like Bellamy, and I thought Bowyer would be out the door too after that fight, but I guess there are still rumors about that.

But this Luque signing has to be step one in the right direction. The scuttlebutt early this morning on the BBC site had Rick Parry claiming Liverpool were in for Owen and wanted him back, but then I saw todays gossip columns said that if you missed out on Owen, Shepard would go after Dirk Kuyt, and I think you could pick him up for a good deal less than you might spend on Owen.

In any event, I saw the frustration of that match at Bolton and though I cant at all complain, I can sympathize with you as Chelsea have struggled to find the right man up front since Hasselbaink left. But I could see in that match how many chances your midfield can create. You have arguably the deepest midfield in England, and many of the guys there have youth to their credit, so it will probably be so for a long time. In any event, if you have a finisher like Luque or, knock wood, even an Owen to pair him up front, then I think things will get alot less frustrating pretty quickly.

Oh, and congrats on wrapping Luque up, by the way

They should demote this club to the Scottish league. Maybe, just maybe, you'll fair a better chance of avoiding relegation there.
