NBA 2005/2006 Season Thread

Well since tonight are the first pre-season matches I figured it was the right time to start the thread for the new season and slowly move away from the offseason thread.

I say a good way to start it would be for all of us to predict who we think will make it to the playoffs this season from both conferences, so w/o further ado:

EAST
1 - Miami Heat (Southeast winner) - do I even need to explain myself here?
2 - Cleveland Cavaliers (Central winner) - I know a lot of you won't agree with this one but I think that with the additions of Hughes and Mashall they have what it takes to win the best best division in the NBA (that's right better than the Southwest).
3 - New Jersey Nets (Atlantic winner) - IF Kidd, Carter and Jefferson can stay healthy the whole year they'll win the Atlantic easily.
4 - Detroit Pistons - will have a slightly better record than Indiana who will suffer from yet 2 or 3 more Artest suspensions (I don't care what he says, he's a manian and he will probably hit a ref and get tons of technicals this season).
5 - Indiana Pacers - they are good but people will realize that the loss of Reggie will be more important than some initially believed.
6 - Chicago Bulls - Hinrich, Gordon, Duhon the best young backcourt in the NBA, they will get it done and will be the 4th team to make the playoffs from the Central division.
7 - Philadelphia 76ers - the East is crappy they'll make it.
8 - Orlando Magic - people say that the Wizards are better but I don't buy it, if it wasn't for the late season collapse last year they would of made it. Washington will suffer from the Hughes loss even though they got Butler and it feels about right for a Jamison injury...

WEST
1 - San Antonio Spurs (Southwest winner) - see East 1.
2 - Phoenix Suns (Pacific winner) - they won't win 60 games again but 55+ sounds about right.
3 - Denver Nuggets (Northwest winner) - they will dominate this division, their only true challenger for the NW title are the 'Wolves.
4 - Houston Rockets - I'm tired of ranking this team high and then seeing them dissapoint so the 4th spot sounds about right, they should be very good with the additions they made through free agency.
5 - Dallas Mavericks - they have Nowitzki, that's about all you need to know.
6 - Minnesota Timberwolves - KG won't miss the playoffs two years in a row, MVP year for him.
7 - Sacramento Kings - they just always seem to make it somehow, won't be any different this year.
8 - Golden State Warriors - best backcourt in the NBA Davis - Richardson, they will be like the baby Suns.

No, not at all it just looks like a pile of s*it. It's actually worse than Dallas's third from a year or so ago...that's just sad.

Miami and San Antonio went right down to the wire and the Heat won it with a last second game winning shot but I don't know who it is yet cas there's no highlights anywhere.

MIAMI -- The Miami Heat and hurricane relief charities came away winners Monday night.

Miami opened the preseason by beating the NBA champion San Antonio Spurs 103-101 in a game added to the schedule to benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina. A check for $1.1 million was presented at halftime to the American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, the Salvation Army and Feed the Poor.

"It's great to be able to do something for people," Heat coach Stan Van Gundy said.

The game drew a capacity crowd, with many tickets donated, and the teams gave fans what they came to see: dunks by Shaquille O'Neal, breakneck drives by Dwyane Wade and plenty of firepower from the Spurs.

Heat rookie Kevin Braswell hit a layup at the buzzer for the winning score.

While San Antonio's lineup was unchanged from the end of last season, the game marked the debut of a revamped lineup by the Heat, who acquired three new starters after losing in the Eastern Conference finals last season.

"The champions, and those who would be champions," said one spectator, Hall of Famer Julius Erving.

Wade's daredevil acrobatics, Tim Duncan's shooting touch and Alonzo Mourning's scowl were all in midseason form. Perhaps the biggest surprise: O'Neal made his first three free throws, one a bank shot.

Despite only a week of practice and a steady stream of substitutions, both teams showed considerable offensive flair and shot better than 50 percent.

Duncan scored 16 points, all in the first half, and added 10 rebounds in 24 minutes. Manu Ginobili added 13 points in 16 minutes. Michael Finley, who spurned the Heat for the Spurs this offseason, made three of four shots.

Wade took several hard spills to earn his 18 points. He sank a 40-foot runner that banked in as the buzzer sounded to end the first half.

O'Neal had 17 points and eight rebounds in 22 minutes. New teammate Antoine Walker drove almost the entire length of the court for one layup and finished with 20 points.

The Heat's new lineup went the first 6 minutes without a field goal and fell behind 18-8 before Wade fed O'Neal for a dunk. Another O'Neal slam left the basket support shaking for several seconds but was waved off because of offensive basket interference, a call he protested in vain.

Full report, nice to see Miami in decent form... :)

Pre-season means nothing.

And some of you are writing the Pacers off so easily.. what? 6th in East? Someone had Boston above Indiana... :nape: PP is more than likely gone, this will be more of a transitional season for the Celtic. I wouldn't be surprised, I think, if they don't make the playoffs.

Carlisle may be thinking of bringing Artest off the bench to lead the second unit, simply because we have too many scoring options in our first... but I don't think that will materialise. Artest will be willing to be sixth man, however. I know that.

And I guess most of you forget we have Danny Granger as our second SF... if Artest misses a substaintial amount of games this season we still have a classy player to back him up. (Y)

We also got Jasikevicius who although is unproven in the NBA, has been the best guard in Europe for some time now... he's a great shooter, clutch, he torched the US team in Athens and he will be spending some minutes at SG as well.

East:
1. Miami (Southeast Champs)
2. Indiana (Central Champs)
3. New Jersey (Atlantic Champs)

except the silver was shiny, they wore it once two seasons ago because the fans thought it sucked and wow were they right, easily the worst jersey ever!

hahaha the Suns. They're gonna suck this season. They've lost 60% of their starting lineup from last season. Stephen Hunter? Raja Bell? :-puke:

The Celtics making the playoffs? I don't really think so and I'm a Celtics fan. This team is rebuilding and I wouldn't be all too surprised to see Pierce traded off during the year. It would take a massive effort by our young guys and rookies to make the playoffs. Al Jefferson would have to be absolutely huge.

In other words I'm sorta doubtful over us making it.

I was just about to post that. Talk about a s*itty start for the Suns.

:( This one smells like Hardaway... He had the same problem & surgery and after that he had lost like 50% of quickness and jumping. Amaure is younger tho, so i guess he might make it thru this
