Adu expected better from Blues
By Chris Stanton - Created on 7 Aug 2006
Freddy Adu has pulled no punches in criticising Chelsea's performance in a pre-season friendly defeat to MLS All Stars on Saturday.
The 18-year-old prodigy, who is reportedly being tracked by The Blues, as well as many of Europe's top clubs, claims there should be no excuse for the defeat which ended the side's US tour on a lacklustre note.
Jose Mourinho handed debuts to four of his new signings - including high-profile captures Andrei Shevchenko and Michael Ballack - but the side failed to sparkle, with suggestions The Blues' leg-weary stars were still becoming accustomed to one another.
But DC United starlet Adu, who was a second half substitute for the All Stars team, expected better from his potential suitors.
"Disjointed Chelsea? Come on! Those guys have played in World Cups and other major championships," Adu told the Daily Express.
"It's not an excuse that this was their first game. They shouldn't need any time to get to know each other.
"If anybody comes into this side they should be able to play with each other straight away.
"They are supposed to be a world class team.
"I've never seen Chelsea play like that before.
"As the game went on our confidence grew and we had much better possession, but the Chelsea players were just standing around."
