No.

I just don't think you can call a team pathetic after one friendly. :kader:

You can say the way they played was pathetic but Bayern Munich (as much as I hate them) are not a "pathetic" team.

Anyone that went to this game expecting to see United's first team would've been kidding themselves. Seriously, how would you expect to see them if you realised all the International tournaments that were taking place this summer.

I think it's good that Ferguson is using this tour to give some experience to the less experienced players.

United get criticised in some quarters for being too commercial, then when they put the football first, in the sense of trying to prepare well for the season ahead, on a pre-season tour they get criticised for not being commercial enough.

Well said Monkee. To no surprise, I don't see anyone moaning at Arsenal for not playing a full strength side in their pre-season games. But at the end of the day Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson are putting their own interests first and you can't blame them for doing so. Fergie's way of giving the middle finger to the boardroom IMO. :)

I was at the match in Chicago and it was very frustrating to watch the quality on the pitch on Sunday. I do understand that this is a friendly, and I do understand that Manchester do not want to fatigue their players before the season begins.

But I've been a fan for 7 years. I've followed them online. I've bought the kits from the team store. I've purchased the online subscriptions to mutv. I've even flown to Manchester to tour Old Trafford.

But after driving 2,000 km round trip for a once in a lifetime opportunity to watch my favourite club, and spending over $600 US personally on petrol, hotel rooms, tickets, I was left feeling cheated and empty.

Funny that the t-shirts they were selling for $30 had Ruud and Howard on them. Funny how with the exception of Keano, I couldn't find a single member of the Manchester XI mentioned in my $10 program.

And the most insulting part was the penalties that were "hurriedly arranged" to appease the American crowd. I cannot be clearer on this fact.

THE CROWD WAS NOT BOOING BECAUSE IT WAS A NIL-NIL DRAW!!

Yes, we North Americans can appreciate a quality nil-nil draw, as long as it's well contested. We felt cheated at the effort put forward by the clubs (especially Manchester). And no kick from the spot was going to change what had happened in the previous 90 minutes. We'd been cheated out of seeing most of the players we'd hoped to see when we purchased our tickets.

Only four of the 14 United players to take the field on Sunday played a single second of top tier football for Manchester last season.

When you charge people $150 US for the privilege to watch a game like that, you'll lose more fans that you'll gain - literally.

There's a reason why the NHL, MLB, NBA and NFL make their stars accompany the team when they go overseas to grow the sport. The foreign fan base deserves a once in a lifetime chance to watch their heroes.

I think it would be worth a 45 minute effort from the players.

Cheers,
Martyn

I kinda do feel sorry for guys like yourself man... To spend all that money, stand in the heat like that and watch that mind numbing match...I do feel ya.. But Sir Alex doesn't want to burn out his players, so it's an extremely difficult situation.

We should've had a regular preseason tour, instead of being commercial and money grabbing. Im sure the board saw dollar signs and jumped at the chance to sign up for another CWS tour so they can get more fans and hopefully more money. But I think a low key preseason tour would've done our players, and the US fans a lot more good.

Why should the first team have played?

Because every other team to play has brought all the players that have played in Euro2004

I was very excited at this match cos of champs league final and the respect between both clubs. i have also seen the reserve matches and i think chris eagles, spector and bardsley are very good and wud be good to watch. bellion also seems stronger and more skillfull. Oh and the picture quality that we got over here was soo bad u cud hardly make out tha players and i was pissed off about that how the hell do u americans watch such poor quality tv???!!:f***:

the game sucked but i do give credit to every single man u player who came on the trip who after the practice session spent at least 45 minutes signing autographs for the fans and were extremely nice letting fans take pictures and whatever else, unlike bayern who signed maybe 10 total!

Just saw the game... I concur...

It sucked.

The commentators got so riled up everytime Spector got the ball. I only saw him make one good play which was a long ball up that found someone, I think Bellion. For me, he tries that extra distance to get a foul. There was one corner where he wasn't even touched but he somehow got on the floor. :crazyboy:

I don't think Smith's debut was all that explosive, he hardly did anything the whole match, since United rarely got on the attacking end of things for long periods of time. But I do give the players credit because they did extremely well against a side that on paper was much much better than them.

And I swear to god I HATE American commentators. They were pronouncing the names, and whenever they did they'd try to make it all fancy and crap, but they end up sounding like fags. :crazyboy:

But by far the dumbest comment I heard was from the guy who has some weird accent: "If only I had a microphone to tell David Bellion to keep on the right side" :kader: :crazyboy:

Edit-Yeah, I agree the booing was justified, but it's not justified when you do it for a little while and then when you find out it's going to penalties start chanting hurrah. :crazyboy:

I'm surprised Ferdinand didn't play, he should be playing every damn game he gets a chance at.

I do feel sorry for the people that spent a lot of money going to see United for the first time, but there are a lot of British United fans - match-going regulars - that have made the trip too. You need to understand that this is the nature of football friendlies.

To compare it to American sports such as the NFL, NBA etc is far-fetched. American sports are usually played only by Americans and as such there is no major International tournaments in them. If the NFL season for example went from the start/mid August to the end of May and then in the 2-3 months off there was a major tournament, all comprising of 2 and possibly 3 or 4 games a week then I think you'll find a change in the friendlies in these sports are run. The bodies that govern US sports have a more sensible time frame for their seasons (other than NFL which manages to fit it all into 4 or 5 months? :S ) .

What you find is that in the top football teams just about all the players are Internationals and they need a rest. Are you suggesting that Ferguson pick these players for friendlies and give them a month off when they should be competing in tournaments?

As for Ferdinand... How many times??? :) He is banned... Not allowed to play in any official football matches, which includes friendlies.

But all the clubs are doing it for economic reasons. They want to sell jerseys, caps and other products in the world's biggest market. The games are shown live over there and the fans obviously want to see the star players of each team.
Bayern had only one game and although the players are not in a good physical condition yet they played.

I thought Rio's ban was over at the end of Euro?

American sports are usually played only by Americans
Seeing as Vince picked up on this part of my post I thought I'd qualify it again/further. I was trying to highlight the resounding lack of any International fixtures in any US Sport, other than NHL (which, for some reason - probably climate related - I think is Canadian and it still doesn't have a similar amount of International games that interfere with the club season). I figure that this was due to the main 'American' sports being distinctly American centric. How many non Americans play in the NFL? Baseball is only played in the US, Japan and some US influenced Caribbean countries (other than Cuba :) ) with any real exposure so there's little chance of regular Internationals there and Basketball is also very US Centric with a few players from other countries. Of the 3 I mentioned the NBA probably has the greatest scope for an International tournament but even so it doesn't happen at the moment.

This is the reason why, imo, US Sports teams take their stars on tour without fail. Their stars can get their holidays after a season and still have time to tour. Were it not for Euro2004 and the Copa America United would have undoubtedly taken their stars on tour. As it is, they need a break more than they need a trip to please some fans in a meaningless friendly or two.

As for Rio, unfortunately his ban goes on until September, just before the match against Liverpool. You should realise now that if it comes to punishing a United player the FA like to take it beyond a reasonable punishment and fix it so as they make their return against Liverpool. :)
