I was at the match in Chicago and it was very frustrating to watch the quality on the pitch on Sunday. I do understand that this is a friendly, and I do understand that Manchester do not want to fatigue their players before the season begins.
But I've been a fan for 7 years. I've followed them online. I've bought the kits from the team store. I've purchased the online subscriptions to mutv. I've even flown to Manchester to tour Old Trafford.
But after driving 2,000 km round trip for a once in a lifetime opportunity to watch my favourite club, and spending over $600 US personally on petrol, hotel rooms, tickets, I was left feeling cheated and empty.
Funny that the t-shirts they were selling for $30 had Ruud and Howard on them. Funny how with the exception of Keano, I couldn't find a single member of the Manchester XI mentioned in my $10 program.
And the most insulting part was the penalties that were "hurriedly arranged" to appease the American crowd. I cannot be clearer on this fact.
THE CROWD WAS NOT BOOING BECAUSE IT WAS A NIL-NIL DRAW!!
Yes, we North Americans can appreciate a quality nil-nil draw, as long as it's well contested. We felt cheated at the effort put forward by the clubs (especially Manchester). And no kick from the spot was going to change what had happened in the previous 90 minutes. We'd been cheated out of seeing most of the players we'd hoped to see when we purchased our tickets.
Only four of the 14 United players to take the field on Sunday played a single second of top tier football for Manchester last season.
When you charge people $150 US for the privilege to watch a game like that, you'll lose more fans that you'll gain - literally.
There's a reason why the NHL, MLB, NBA and NFL make their stars accompany the team when they go overseas to grow the sport. The foreign fan base deserves a once in a lifetime chance to watch their heroes.
I think it would be worth a 45 minute effort from the players.
Cheers,
Martyn
