United v Lyon preview

By martin
Date: 23/3/2004

Tonight United's quest for a third European Cup goes on with the Premier League Champions entertaining Lyon at Old Trafford.......

The Red Devils go into the game in Manchester on the back of a three-nil win against Spurs at the weekend and the recent massacre of local rivals Manchester city on their own ground. It is the first of two important games this week, the second being at Highbury as Sir Alex Ferguson's men look to keep their twelve-point advantage over Arsenal.

United are unbeaten this season and defeat of the Gunners will break the record currently held by Leeds United and Liverpool. First though United must despatch impressive French side Lyon the way they did Porto in the last phase.

Diego Forlan is set to start up-front following his goal of the season contender against city in the Manchester derby. Ronaldhino, who could well have been playing UEFA Cup football with Barcelona (imagine that!) had Peter Kenyon not got approval from the PLC to up United summer bid beyond £20m, will play alongside Paul Scholes in midfield. The Captain, Roy Keane, will be rested.

Ruud Van Nistelrooy will start for the first time since an impressive hat-trick yielding ninety minutes at Loftus Rd three weeks ago. United's power up-front will be matched by Rio Ferdinand's discipline at the back as the team looks to keep it's tenth consecutive clean-sheet. Ferdinand has already been announced as the only certain squad member for England's trip to Portugal in Euro 2004.

Speaking at the weekend Rio announced his joy at doing so well for club and country, 'We have built up a fantastic lead in the Premiership. I now want to go on and do my best for the FA and my country. I have spoken with Mr Palios recently who is a fantastic man, an ambassador for the English game. I only hope that I can make him proud in Portugal. He is lovely. I want to kiss his face'.

Sir Alex Ferguson hopes that United will take a healthy lead over to France. They will be joined by up to 5,000 supporters who were no doubt delighted that Aston Villa have chosen to up their allocation and cut ticket prices for the forthcoming semi-final against faltering Arsenal.

A spokesperson for Villa announced 'our own set of supporters are a right set of part-time wankers so it will be nice to fill the ground for a change, ha ha ha. No, seriously'.

When asked why Arsenal's allocation had been cut he continued 'Manchester United fans should be rewarded for their historic loyalty to their club, rain or shine. We have all seen televised examples of Arsenal's failure to take their full quota of tickets. We are doing what we know is right. We also wouldn't dream of inflating our prices and taking the piss out of match going United fans, hence the reduction in ticket prices. Don't thank me, just get me a pint'.

Villa's generosity, coupled with refunds from FC Porto after they took the piss in the last round of the Champions League with £65 tickets, completes a good month for United fans. The club last week announced that the additional 7,000 tickets made available by development of the North-East and North-West quadrants (F and J stand to you and me) will be sold to local Manchester kids so that the club remains within reach it's rightful heirs.

Paddy Harveson, who together with Peter Kenyon turned down the chance to move jobs this season because they are massive reds, gave an exclusive interview to IMUSA. In it he made every United fans hair stand on end with a stirring speech about how the football club 'put the Manchester in Manchester United first' and how corporate whoring of 'your club' was but a secondary concern for the PLC. What a guy!

All being well, accounting for a draw at Highbury being the worst case scenario, United should be crowned League Champions against Liverpool at Old Trafford in April. We can then sit back and think of the European Cup Final in Gelsenkirchen, though missing Morrisey at the Arena because of the FA Cup Final in Cardiff is a bit gut wrenching. **** happens!

Silvestre fears short summer

Mikael Silvestre claims the title race is over and he is playing to avoid being forced to cut short his summer holidays.

The Manchester United defender realises that, with the champions languishing in third place behind The Gunners and Chelsea, they may have to face the qualifying rounds before sealing a place in next season's UEFA Champions League.

Although most United fans probably view next weekend's FA Cup semi-final as critical for keeping the club's season alive, the France international is hoping to first upset Arsenal's record attempt at Highbury to silence his colleagues with Les Bleus.

"Arsenal deserve to be in the position they are because they have been so strong throughout the season," said Silvestre.

"The championship is over for us now.

"Really we are playing to make sure we don't get our summer holiday cut back by having to play in the qualifying rounds for the Champions League.

"But going to Highbury gives us the opportunity to show we are getting back on track too.

"Hearing from the French players phoning me about their unbeaten record is getting annoying so hopefully we can be the ones to end it.

"I have known Thierry Henry, in particular, for a long time but I will kick him if I have to, no doubt about that.

"The one thing about Thierry is that he has always worked hard on his game.

"Even when he was 15, he was far better than any of us so there has always been a lot of attention on him.

"Yet it has never deflected his attention away from the game.

"Apart from his skill, his pace is incredible.

"It's impossible to stay with him when he tries to run away from you.

"You have to try and stop him in different ways and, fortunately, we have managed to do that in recent games against Arsenal.

"Hopefully, it stays that way tomorrow."

United empire not crumbling - Gill

Manchester United chief executive David Gill has rejected suggestions that Arsenal are close to ending the era of Old Trafford dominance because he believes the Gunners will soon be hobbled by debts.

On the pitch, Arsene Wenger's side have left United looking ordinary as they established what looks like an impregnable lead in the Premiership and maintained a presence in the Champions League.

The two clubs meet in the league tomorrow and again next weekend in an FA Cup semi-final at Villa Park with Arsenal favourites to progress.

But Gill warned that United are still financial champions, pointing to the Gunners' plans to build a new stadium at Ashburton Grove as a drain on their resources.

'People talk about the United empire crumbling and that Arsenal have a great new future but let's not ignore the fact that their debts will be £280-300million and that is a lot of debt to service,' Gill told the Daily Telegraph.

'Arsenal are a very well run club but, compared with us, our off-the-field revenue is a lot bigger and we have got this magnificent stadium which is paid for.'

Eddie Johnson strikes twice for Antwerp(Y)

United Youth star Eddie Johnson bagged a brace for Royal Antwerp as the Belgian side took a step away from relegation.

Chester-born Johnson, who is away from Old Trafford on loan, struck twice inside the first 25 minutes with two tremendous shots as Antwerp overcame big-guns Mouscron 3-1.

It leaves Royal 17th in the Belgian league with seven games remaining. Let's hope Eddie can shoot Antwerp to safety.
