I would have liked someone who had coached in the bigger stages. He seems to be another apprentice/pawn of fergie.

I'd like someone who's proven.

We need someone who has coached teams with a good defensive record, at least until the end of the season...

Dont know if Smith is that man, but i hope to the heavens he is...

I think its a good move for us to appoint Smith even though he is not a household name to most of us. The last thing we need is speculation of a new assistant manager in the final stage of the season. Hopefully our fortunes will change.

5 DAYS TO SAVE OUR SEASON

More defensive misfortune for United

Manchester United's defensive worries show little sign of abating before Saturday's FA Cup quarter-final against Fulham, with Quinton Fortune the latest injury victim.

Fortune: On crutches (CliveMason/GettyImages)

The South African utility man, United's left-back for much of the season, hobbled away from the club's Carrington training ground on crutches on Thursday.

Should Fortune fail to recover in time for the Old Trafford showdown, Sir Alex Ferguson will again be forced to reshuffle a back-line which has borne the brunt of the blame for a disastrous spell which threatens to ruin United's season.

SInce Rio Ferdinand began his suspension for missing a drugs test at the end of January, his defensive colleagues have shipped 14 goals and fallen nine points behind Arsenal in the race for the Premiership.

With Porto carrying a first-leg lead into the Champions League second-round rematch in Manchester next week, the FA Cup could yet represent the league champions' best chance of silverware this year.

But Fulham, who have already won once at Old Trafford this season, will be up against a makeshift back four.

While Fortune is doubtful, Ferdinand and the suspended Gary Neville are definitely sidelined, while Mikael Silvestre is unlikely to return before the Porto game on Tuesday.

Roy Keane is again likely to be forced into his emergency centre-back role alongside Wes Brown, with Phil Neville and John O'Shea filling the full-back berths.

On a brighter note for Ferguson, keeper Tim Howard is back after missing last weekend's draw at Fulham with a stomach strain.

'It wasn't a big issue and I'm feeling fine now,' Howard told MUTV.

Time to stamp on Keano
Porto goalkeeper Vitor Baia has urged UEFA to throw the book at Roy Keane for stamping on him. The Portuguese star said: "Roy Keane is a bad example for the game of football. He has always had a negative and aggressive attitude on the pitch and he showed that against Porto when he stamped on me. Typically, people are trying to say it was my fault and blaming me for getting him sent off. But it is Keane who has no respect for the unwritten rules that a player jumps over a keeper when he comes out."

Man Utd to boost capacity

United could expand even further
Manchester United are considering expanding Old Trafford by a further 7,500 seats to a 75,000-capacity.
A statement from the club said other facilities at the Premiership's biggest stadium might also be upgraded.

"A feasibility study is underway to evaluate the technical, financial and planning issues on completing the north-east and north-west quadrants.

"Any decision to proceed will be taken by the board in due course and announced thereafter."

The officials saw the incident and took action. No need for this actor from UEFA Cup Final 2003 to do a Giggs-On-Esseev

Old Trafford could be expanded to house 500,000 pople and we'd still have full capacity crowds every match but 75,000 sounds pretty reasonable, though seeing how the Old Trafford pitch has suffered since the expansion to 67,000 from lack of sunlight etc the ground staff will have to come up with some nifty plan or else we'll be playing beach football.

As for Walter Smith's appointment, he has a proven track record though I don't really think he'll make a good no.2, bring back Queiroz (he's a master) or McLaren.

No getting studs in the f@cking back from one of football's dirty players, if not the worst is not acting, it's just a disgrace Keano is still allowed to play, hope today uefa does slam teh book on him, I wanna see 4 game suspension at least from this pathetic repeat offender. Still upset at teh Uefa cup, we are just happy Deco still has legs from all the cheap low class tackles from that UK side, plus happy Marco Ferreira still has a face from a elbow that got no booking, Celtic are indeed bad pathetic cheats that lost, but get over it. You upset Porto won 2-1 first lega nd we have more european cups then Manchester United. Get over it

United on Mexes trail

http://www.skysports.com/skysports/article/0,,53-1126271,00.html

Manchester United are back on the trail of Auxerre's outstanding Philippe Mexes - who will be departing the French club this summer.
The 20-year-old has been told by Auxerre that he will be sold this summer and this has once again been confirmed by his representative Oliver Jouanneaux.

"Auxerre have told us that Philippe will be sold this summer," he told skysports.com.

The news comes after United dispatched chief scout Martin Ferguson to watch Mexes - a player they have been tracking for almost a decade - in action against Paris Saint German on Sunday.

Mexes is one of the best young defenders in Europe and clearly a number of clubs will have him high on their shopping list this summer.

Reports in France had suggested that Mexes wanted a move to Spain, but Jouanneaux insists that England is still likely to be first choice for his talented client.

"There were reports saying Spain was Philippe's preferred move, but that is not true," he continued.

"I think, and having talked with him, that the English style would be best for him as he would have more time to play - which is what he is good at."

Jouanneaux also emphasised that Mexes will take time in deciding his future.

"It is nice when clubs are watching, but Philippe does not get carried away with this sort of thing," he continued.

"He will be expecting to play at a good club in the Champions League, but essential will be what the club and the coach has to say to him.

"We don't know who will want him in the summer or who will come in for him.

"We know who has watched him, and Manchester United for instance already know him well as he went there about five years ago.

"Many clubs will not make themselves known, as they already know what Philippe can do and will probably wait until after Euro 2004.

"All this speculation is not unusual and he knows how to live with it."

The likes of Arsenal, Internazionale and Juventus have all been linked with Mexes in the past few years and it is unlikely that any one club will have a straight run at the stylish French stopper.

Barring injury Mexes will be in the France squad for Euro 2004 - and it is unlikely his future will be resolved before the player flies out to Portugal.
