Although he's injured most of the times like his brother, but I think It was better to keep as a backup for Evra. Maybe Sir Alex is too desperete to sign Baines. But he's 27 and Evra can still be first team player for at least another year or two.

Baines for 17m is way too much. Would rather pay that amount for a younger player.
When Jordi Alba costs 14m Euros, spending 17m pounds on Baines would make you feel a little sick (H)

I guess fit Nani would be first choice right winger + our tactics might change with Kagawa and other arrival.

Number 7 was for legends, megastars, Best, Robson, Cantona, Beckham, and Ronaldo.

Valencia is good but not that good, maybe Nani was a better choice but maybe it shows another sign that he will leave.

United number 7 should be someone who can play like an icon, a player who can win matches on his own and give character to a team. Valencia is good but not in that category, I should admit he's better choice than Owen.

Does it mean we won't sign any big name player this summer?????

There are lots of question marks over the fitness and form of current squad

fitness of injury prone players like Rafael, Anderson, Rio, Fletcher, and Vidic, will he be the same
age of Scholes and Giggs
form of Rooney, Young, Carrick
Whether Nani will stay
Can Kagawa cope in EPL

Yeah but that's what Football's all about, isn't it? The fact is some of United's biggest legends wore that shirt. Why wouldn't Messi keep his #30 or 19 shirt?

Number 7 for Valencia, are you kidding me?

You don't know what you're talking about (as usual). Valencia won the players’ and fans’ player of the season, as well as our goal for the season.

Who else would you want to give it to? Kagawa refused it, Rooney refused it too 2-3 years ago. Valencia was much better than Nani last season.

Because he's in the first team and wants a first team number. I don't think it matters that Rivaldo or whoever had it before him.

If your team got relegated would you just stop using 7 because no one would be good enough to wear it? Come on.

Valencia definitely deserves that number. Beckham and CR had done much less before getting it themselves, plus he's probably your most consistent player.

well, #7 is an iconic number for them, and it has been worn during my time in football exclusively by players of that magnitude ... even Michael Owen fits the level, considering that he is a Ballon d'Or winner ... Valencia's a good player and hard worker and all, but his profile just isn't megastar ...

Will be nice to see Giggsy play in a 'major' national football tournament finally. The Olympics. It's sad that he's never gotten the chance to play in the World Cup or the EUROs. Like George Best.

And, De Gea has been chosen to play for the Spanish Olympic squad. Don't think it would hamper his pre-season training much. If at all, it might give him the required confidence for the season if Spain end up winning Gold.

Looking at the players at our disposal, I can't think of anyone other than Valencia who deserves to wear the #7 more. Also, it'd be nice to see a United #7 playing again.

Also, look at this. King Eric!

Regarding number 7, it's an iconic number and most players who wore it were great players and defined an era. It's not all about the performance, number 7 is the public face of the club and is important for marchendising point of view. If we classify United number 7's, Valencia will be at the bottom by far.

Even Cleverly was a better choice. Sir Alex decisions were so costly as of late.

I guess enough said about this topic now ;).

yeah, but they were young talented players with bright future and they had "it factor" which mega stars has. Valencia doesn't have the "it factor" ;).

Oh come on, the number 10 jersey not only is one of the most iconic in football, it was worn by Rivaldo (yes, he was actually the best in the world at some point), Maradona, Ronaldinho and the likes. But yeah at the end of the day it's just a number. Football is also just a sport. And the Holocaust was just Hitler trying to end the Jewish race.

I can't really see who else one could give it to. If you're looking for iconic megastars then look around. We hardly have any. One can even argue that Valencia actually does embody the current crop of hardworking determined players.
