United are normally strong in defence - this is just an extreme set of circumstances. If we need to buy anywhere then it's on the wing and up front (mind you the two are linked these days)
What does worry me is that we keep hearing rumblings of an impending financial "crisis" and next to nothing from the club. According to Bayern they practically offered Ribery to us for £60M and didn't even get a response.
I know Fergie says repeatedly that he won't buy over the odds - but simply put that is the way we have to play if we want to add to the squad. Also we lost a phenomenal player last Summer and replaced him with the (admittedly impressive) Valencia and a free transfer Michael Owen (who has been decidedly poor) I've said before that we need someone who can do something a bit different and unlock defences - in time I believe Obertan will do that, but he's not the finished article yet. I'm very disappointed in Nani's form drop off - I believed he honestly was the "next" superstar and also we need to address the fact that Scholes, Giggs and Neville will soon be winding up, Rio Ferdinand is having a rotten run with injuries and we're carrying passengers like Nani and Foster too.
On the plus side I must say the "Pole in goal" has been impressive, young Gibson is showing signs of his future class and Valencia has been a revelation.
But the fact is United will need to buy soon, either in January or the Summer - and buy big. My worry is really that the money isn't there for the rebuilding programme United are facing in the next 24 months.

Are you really complaining about our defence? The one attribute we have been praised for consistently since 2006. Not to mention our goalkeeper VDS who only recently went on a club and Premier League record for consecutive clean sheets that most people would dream off.

Gary Neville - The Captain, the scouse destroyer, treble winner. Year after year he defines what hard commitment is. He rarely lets us down, with the experince of a hard tackle and even now can still launch devastating crosses and long ball throws.
Wes Brown - "the best natural defender this club has had for years" right from the horses mouth. Also one of the few players left from the treble winning team who consistently puts in great a performances. This guy next to Oshea is one of our most underrated players. The guy is a legend who lives and breaths red, academy at 12, full contract at 17, Young Player of the Year... not once but twice (only Giggs has done that).
He had a huge stint next to Jaap Stam where he was second to non. When ever he gets consistent games and not hampered by injury, which he's unfortunately had his whole career (which I should add always comes back from strong) he plays exceptionally. Have you already forgotten how well he did in 2008 before having that operation, 52 appearances. Cracking season that won us the champions league.
John O'Shea - Another of our under rated players. He's an asset to our team. Every club should have a versatile player like him. He's made the difference when we have been down, able to slip in at literally ever position, even goalkeeper. Another dedicated red being with us since 1998, his quality is without question with huge experince.
Patrice Evra - Hasn't been with us as long as the previous 3, slow start but one of the best left backs in the world. If not the best. Nothing more to add here, his quality speaks for itself.
Rio Ferdinand & Vidic - They are United Defence. As simple as that, there strong performances season after season have led us to records and victory. Ferdinand has had a few inuries as of late, but will bounce back strong. He next to Vidic are still one of the best if not the best defensive partnerships in the game.
Jonny Evans, Fábio, Rafael, De Laet - The new school, our new hopefuls. Evans leading the pack, you could probably consider him a first team player already. He's done great.
Fabio and Rafael, these guys ooze skill and not afraid to go forward, scoring a few goals already. They have great prospects and with continued experience in defence will be some of the finest wing backs.
De laet, too early to tell but showing great promise. Did fairly well the other day.
We have great mixture of experience and youngsters, the old teaching the new. There's nothing to worry about here.

Gibson's passing has been just superb in the first 10 minutes. One he got wrong but some fantastic long passes to the wings. Wish i could say the same for Anderson...

Compliments to the defence, they stood their ground and Tommy K stepped in when needed. He's in form right now, doing the right things at the right moment, and as we all know, he's a great shot-stopper too, thinking about Grafite's shot, Tommy saved it brilliantly. And then Owen, unbelievable performance, he only had 5 shots on goal and three of them went in....

Whats that now? 7 goals in 20 appearances. Wonder how many of them have been for just a few minutes/half games. Not bad stats really especially if they improve. Big confidence boost that's for sure.
haha yeahMore good news, Chelsea Drew. Not that it matters in the champions league... but mentally... a loss then a draw. African cup of nations hasn't started yet.
Clutching at straws I know, but they haven't exactly been setting the world on fire and we have been winning. Confidence all around... I can see us retaking the top spot if we keep this up. Such a shame about our injuries.
Wonder how long before owens back to fitness?
