i'm for one going for the facts that European cup should be cater for the league winner of each country, like it used to be.. but things has changed, so did the European Cup, Uefa want the competition to be more interesting and generate more income for the clubs involved thus the formation of the now Champions League, let's face it, if Uefa only allow the "Champions" of each country to play in it, i doubt it will generate much interest, cause some of the "champions" of their respective country are just ain't good enough...

If Porto, PSV, Lyon etc won the Champions' League last season, then wouldn't they automatically be entered in next year? It's only different for us as we're in one of the top three countries according to UEFA domestically, England, Italy and Spain.

Huge relief today though, we deserve the right to defend our trophy.

no, they wouldnt be entered automatically, unless the finished in the CL spots of their countries. the rules had to be bended so Liverpool could enter the competition.

Wrong and right...
UEFA bent the rules, yeah, but the rule they bent is the one that states no country can have more than 4 clubs in the CL... Had Porto finished 10th in the portuguese league and won the CL, they'd be entered if the portuguese FA made a request to UEFA and in that case they'd be entered in the group stage as well as their league champion and 2nd placed, while the 3rd would be entered in Qualifying 3rd stage
It means group stage teams are:
CL Title Holders
1st and 2nd from: Spain, England, Italy, France, Germany, Portugal
1st from: Greece, Holland and Czech rep

Unless the title holder is from a 4-club country and failed to qualify through the domestic competition (Liverpool's situation)

The 4 club rule was made because no club could get into a group with another club of the same country, and that was when CL had 4 groups...

the rules now (after these changes made to suit Liverpool) are such, that if you win the CL, you enter next year's CL automatically. its a good rule otherwise, but it shouldnt have been made now, because it looks like UEFA just gave in to the media pressure instead of changing it for the right reasons.

edit: didnt see the post above as i wrote mine. i didnt know all that :). well, all is done now. good luck to Pool in their CL campaign this year.

Great news! I don't think starting in the first qualifying round is a problem. We'll be making the knock-out stages no problem

you can't say anything for sure... of course there were interests from many people to see Liverpool there because they generate money but still you can't say they wouldn't do it if it was a smaller team (smaller meaning "not so financially attractive")

Come on now, who are you trying to kid? This is just unbelievable IMO, sucks for the other teams who have to get a smaller share of money to fit Liverpool in :boohoo:

I'm not trying to kid anyone.. if anything, someone was trying to kid people Liverpool only got in because media was with them... it's the CHAMPIONS league for goodness sake... of course, maybe liverpool shouldn't have been in there since they were fourth in the EPL but they went on to win the damned thing... if the champions of the champions league shouldn't be allowed in but the second place of some minor footballing country like switzerland are, something is very wrong...

About the teams getting less money... Liverpool too is getting less money since as champions they'd get 30% of the money destined to the english teams if 4 teams reach the group stage, yet now they'd be getting 15%... it's not defined who'd get what if all 5 reach group stages

That same champion should be able to finish in the top 4 positions in their own league.
forgive me if i'm wrong, but are you implying that top 4 = champions?

no offense to everton, but since when are they champions? :|

You misunderstand. I was referring to Liverpool being champions of Europe, not that the top 4 teams are champions :jap:

This may be partly true, but the second place of that minor country earned their spot and still deserve to be there. It shouldn't matter where they come from. Oh well, it's done and dusted now. Nothing anyone can do about it now.

You believe winning the champions league is not "earning a spot", yet making it to fourth place on some nations, second on others is?
Second place in switzerland deserves a place to be there, yeah, but the champions of europe do too...
