Its always going to be difficult at San siro, i think Inter is yet to lost at san siro ( Seria A ) but i think Benitez the '' tinker man '' will get his team organized well enough to maintain the 2 - 0 advantage. even a 1 -0 or a 2 - 1 loss would do no harm, i can see them go through with a draw or a harmless 1 - 0 , 2 - 1 , however, if they fail to make the last 8, then its good-bye rafa:)

Bad Football?

Liverpool's performance wasn't a bad display at all. Yes it took a long time to break inter down, but they had every man behind the ball for the vast majority of the game, it would have been a lot easier if they had done some attacking, as there would have been more space for Torres to expolit.

Yes it is going to be difficult against Inter, but i can't see them keeping a clean sheet, so they will need to score four

You your understanding is banal, for me the worst kind of football is uncreative and that's what they where. Maybe that's good for you but not for me i am used to passes that only Pirlo and Kaka' can make, and there's simply no player at liverpool with such qualities in that department except maybe Gerrard. Why do you get hooked on how harsh i said it, people always get stuck when pride starts boiling and don't think about the point.

So whats going to happen when Liverpool's terrible domestic form fails to qualify them for the Champions League. Then what will they have?

If Liverpool cannot make it into the top four teams at home, then there will be no Europe for them. Then where will Benitez's football take Liverpool.

Nobody in England will give a club enough respect just because they manage to win the CL, or even make it to the final. If you are pants in your domestic league then it is all pretty meaningless. Nobody will ever really regard you as Champions of Europe if you can only finish fifth or sixth at home. It is a very hollow achievement in that respect.

When a team cannot make an impression at home in the EPL, then a CL trophy is a very poor substitute in my opinion. Maybe once might be nice, but Liverpool have not done anything in the league for 17 years FFS.

In Liverpool's case, their success in Europe recently, has merely papered over the cracks for too long now. Most Liverpool fans would like to win the League without a doubt. Anything else comes as second best, including the CL trophy, even if they refuse to admit it out loud.

Perhaps non English Liverpool fans do not feel that way. Maybe they feel that the CL is more important and has more prestige than winning the League. Liverpool are an English club who should be giving priority to winning honours in England first and foremost. Thats when its time to concentrate on Europe. Unfortunately Rafa does not understand English football well enough to succeed here. That is why his time here will be limited.

Thats the impression of an English football fan anyway. Give me the League title any day over the CL.

Yes, I'd take the League title over the CL at the moment. Yes, we do need to get things sorted in the League.

I don't know why you'd think we don't care about the League. We'd love to be doing well on it, and not just fighting to get 4th place. That said, the CL is the only thing we can win this year, and if we can do that and not mess the League campaign even more, then I'm going for it.

Well of course mate and thats understandable. I did say "perhaps" though didn't I? I don't actually know what other fans think so your opinion on this is very valid and appreciated.

I just think that it would worry me if the only way that my club could qualify for Europe was by winning the thing the year before, as you lot did in 2005 when Liverpool finished 5th and UEFA changed the rules for you.

If you fail to win it again this year AND you finish 5th in the League, that does not leave Rafa much to go for. He admits himself that he cannot get to grips with the EPL and that must be a big worry. He's been here long enough, and if he hasn't got to grips with the EPL by now, then he never will. That was one hell of an admission on his part.

No more rafa, that's for sure. He's only clinging on due to the Champions League.

I think you are right. He really needs to go for Liverpools sake. Otherwise Liverpools future looks bleak indeed. I cannot believe that a lot of fans actually back him. Wierd.

Every true fan would love their team to win their domestic league more than anything else, and its no difference at anfield.

It was early season i remember when liverpool was sitting in 1 st place with 11 goals in 3 matches ( if my memory is not wrong ) , and earlier Rafa had claimed that maybe this is the season, i even read so many articles where rafa is saying '' we now have a squad to compete for the title ''. He goes with his '' Rotation '' policy and look what happened? thats where liverpool loses ground which will be CRUCIAL at the end, which rafa might not realize but come the end of the season, he surely will regret. I remember at the top of my head when liverpool dropped points 3 matches in a row one of them being birmingham. I though our main goal was the title ? well.. what happened now??

I though our squad was strong enough to compete for the title? well what happened before the january transfer market, he goes to the owners and asks for money to strenghten the squad.. well.. i though the owners already gave him money to spend in the summer?
Rafa knows how important domestic league is, but the reason why the target is changed to CL is simply because Liverpool are not good enough to win the FA Premier League! and so they go marching towards the CL hoping to win it all with 50% chance of luck with them =).

All in all, Rafa is just not made to manage a top english side, he can take his status of '' tinkerman '' or a '' tactics genius '' to some other club where it might work but its definitely not going to bring any glory at anfield.

^^^ A final appearance in EVERY season he's been here, and trophies in 2 of the 3. Come on, a lot of clubs would take that. In England, he's turned into a Cup manager. He was a good League manager in Spain. Frankly, the way I see it, winning ANY 1 of the big three is better than wining nothing.

The media likes to build up this whole thing about there being a "Big 4" set of clubs in England....it's really only 3....we're not in it.

it truly is only 3, we oviouslly dont deserve to be compared with Arsenal , United , Chelsea. I just cannot imagine, its been such a disastrous season!! i had really high expectations this year specially with the funds being available.
Oh well, As a liverpool fan, i can only hope that things change soon.

All eyes on liverpool as they take on middlesborough on sat. This is it Rafa,
You get the 3 points, you will be spared for another week or so, drop points and you HAVE to be kicked out.

I can hear some fans calling out the name '' Mourinho ''
, the owners will difinitely consider it.

Mourinho

wouldn't mind him at Liverpool but can't see him coming back to the Premiership.

Does Rafa deserve more time? Probably not, but the season isn't over yet, qualify for Champions League and maybe a CL final, and I say then give him another year. Cut back the number of players in the squad and stop rotating so much, and we will be more consitent in the league

Fourth place

Well we are back into fourth - all we need to do now is hold onto it for the rest of the season.

Man City v Everton on Monday, now guess I will have to cheer a Man City win rather than the draw I was previously going for. A man City win though brings them right back into contention for fourth

Here in Argentina its the other way around...the media puts the continental trophy over a domestic league...

Anyway, right now i will take any trophy after 3 years of nothing... ;) even a Recopa or a Sudamericana...

I've read that Masche is going to stay in Liverpool...is that right?

fighting win over Middlesborough....ah well, it's still a win, which is what we need now.

As far as the dogfight (and it WILL be a dogfight) for 4th spot, I can't see Portsmouth, Aston Villa or Man City hanging around for the duration. They'll all fade before season's end. The real obstacle is Everton...they're going nowhere.

Everton have been such a good team this year, they are stepping it up, and i do agree with you that Man City, Portsmouth will fade before the end of the season, but this villa team has also impressed. although the chances of them getting that 4th place is low, but i think they will keep going till the last fixture. But officially it should be between liverpool and everton, and liverpool having the better chance.

Focus back on CL now, i do feel we will get to the last 8 and just hope that we are not matched up against any superhouse teams once in to the last 8.

Villa

Am probably most worried about Villa, they have done nothing special all season and are still in contention.

Everton will hopefully get distracted by Europe - though so may Liverpool
City are probably too inconsistent - though so are Liverpool
Portsmouth - new strikers may keep them in contention

3-1 win over Bolton, back to 4th for now....much needed away win. Important week lies ahead, so it was vital to begin with a win in a winnable game. We won't stay in 4th, but the win was really needed. Kuyt has been a lot better than decent of late. Reebok has been a tough place for us...it's been 5 years since we last won there.

On a side note, it appears Rafa is ready to sign a new contract....as reported on liverpoolfc.tv. Suddenly(almost overnight) it Gerrard's future, at the club, that is the hot topic.

As I said above, a crucial week lies ahead.....much more than just this season is at stake.
