It's in his fucking sig.

American Sniper was kind of disappointing. Didn't impact me in any way, didn't offer anything new on the Iraq War narrative and seemed to be a lost opportunity in many ways. Decent film but I thought it would be much better. Cooper was good, though.

Watched American Sniper since I saw it was directed by Clint Eastwood. It was meh. Hate Bradley Cooper's fake Texan accent.

The Hurt Locker was way better.

Jupiter Ascending

Meh. I mean, the Wachowskis have amazing imaginations, don't get me wrong, but every movie the release just shows the Matrix was more of an accident or at least a once-in-a-lifetime thing. I actually liked V For Vendetta and Cloud Atlas, but they, like Jupiter Ascending, don't even get close to Matrix (the first one). I feel this one would actually have benefited from being two or even three movies, actually.

the matrix (first one) never had it for me. I barely watched the other series of the franchise.

Hugh Grant is beloved by many women, that's why.

Jules much prefers Colin Firth, both to look at and personality wise.

And Firth is Mr Darcy, he's loved by plenty of women.

I thought it was enjoyable enough to watch. Certainly if you wanted new insight into the war, it didn't really provide it. But it did paint a good picture of returning serviceman struggling to settle back into society.

Cooper was really good, he surprised me. I thought of him as Chris Kyle, not as Bradley Cooper throughout. Which I think is testament to the way he took on the role.

I didn't notice that it was fake. It sounds real Texan to Aussies!

So, Birdman wins 3 majors (film, director, original screenplay) and the obvious cinematography (although I was leaning towards Budapest).

Budapest wins a bunch of minor stuff, Moore and Arquette win actresses, Simmons and Hawkins dude win actors. Selma adapted screenplay and Sniper, Whiplash and Interstellar win here and there.

Reaction: meh.

I am happy that Birdman won best picture, the favourite was Boyhood which I just could not bring myself to see - it sounded like a great project but I really dont like watching kids on screen and am saturated by 'growing up' dramas, none of which I can see beating Tree of Life.

The big disappointment for me (and normally I love any British winner) was Eddie Redmayne - more proof that all you have to do is play ugly or disabled to take it. Equally good portrayals of Hawking have been done on British TV, in fact, I am sick of actors winning this for biographical portrayals in general - it's so easy to give it to them because you have a real life figure to compare the performance to in terms of accuracy, but, really, it's not so much acting as imitation. Keaton genuinely delved into his own self, exposed his own wounds and gave an unrelenting, vicious portrayal of stress, creativity and instability which was also bang on in terms of comic timing, Redmayne did a very good impression of a famous man in a wheelchair.

I agree. And in any case I thought Benedict was better than Redmayne. His character isn't someone that could easily just be imitated, and I think it was a character requiring much more nuance.

Yeah totally agree. The only thing I'd say in defense of Redmayne is that his and Felicity Jones' performances truly carry the movie, which would otherwise not even get a nomination for best movie (even so I don't really think it should have); whereas in Birdman there's a lot more going on in terms of it being a great movie.

Anyway I would have liked to see Wes Anderson get either the best director or best movie, but whatever. And JK Simmons got his, the fairest of the lot.

I agree on the biopic issue, it has become too easy to guess the winners because every year we see the same types of films and evrry year they win.

Watched Nightcrawler and it might be my favorite performamce of the year. Gylenhaal was sensastional amd the movie got you hooked all the way through. My one complaint would be that the first scene seemed unconvincing. Gylenhaal looked gaunt and his voice is quite high pitched so seeing him wailing on a security guy felt like a leap of faith. Had it happened later in the movie I would have bought it.
