Some movies aren't meant for younger audiences. That simple.

Makes perfect sense. My parents were never the kind to not allow me to watch a R rated movies but when I was younger I just didn't find them that enjoyable. For example a movie like let's say Mystic River I would of found absolutely horrible when I was say 12 but I saw it maybe two years ago and I thought it was absolutely spectacular.

Exactly. But more than not enjoying it, I don't wanna get the wrong message. A friend of mine watched Fight Club with me, and he decided to start fights with anyone who crossed him. Thing about being young is that your mind is malleable, so going out and watching any movie can be dangerous, literally, my friend got beaten up 3 times.

SPOILER ALERT FOR FOLKS WHO HAVEN'T YET SEEN THIS FLICK, man.

I didn't say there wasn't "one redeeming aspect or quality about the flick" I just said I didn't like anything about it, I mean the film itself was very well crafted and all but I just didn't dig it AT ALL. Soundtrack? I don't really have a problem with all the songs individually, they are awesome, but the way they were used in this movie just didn't feel right to me. Music is used in film to take away from the element of time and to help the story line move swiftly (one of the uses anyway). I felt that because of the extremely realistic style of filming that Babel had (loooooong scenes that don't do anything much but follow every step of whatever character is on screen, the club scene with the Asian girl for example) the soundtrack did nothing but make those scenes drag out even longer to the point of exasperation (I'm not kidding, I got pissed at the director when I was watching this).

hurhurhur........you didn't like one thing about it, but you've got a contention with my assertion that you didn't find one redeeming quality about the movie......

hmmm......I won't argue against or disacknowledge your views about the length of the movie because we all have different perception of how time passes and this movie was longer than the average flick, but I don't for one second feel that the length of the movie was an impeding force or a hindrance to the artistry and overall enjoyment factor of the movie. The soundtrack did its job masterfully in helping to create the mood and atmosphere necessary for each segment. I just don't see how it detracted from a scene, or made it more laborious and tedious to take in a part of the movie, man.

Like I said before, man. You might wanna give this one another try some time later, because right now your opposition to it seems very visceral and well determined, you know? I've felt that about certain bands or movies before only to listen or watch 'em at a later time again and find them less terrible and actually even good, man.

There isn't anything wrong with the structure, three of my favorite movies are not in chronological order, Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs and the aforementioned Memento.

Cool.........

$teauA;2382361 said:
I did have many issues with the theme, or themes, the film possessed. For one I thought that the filmmakers tried too hard to develop complex themes when in reality the story only allowed for simple ideas like gun control, immigration, struggling marriage etc... Going off of that, I had a big problem with the way immigrants were portrayed in this film.

I could go on and on but one other MAJOR issue for me was that I found the decisions the characters made to be absolutely banal. Seeing as the filmmakers clearly went with a realistic style of film, I found that the actions of the characters were completely against what could possibly happen in reality, in other words VERY VERY stretched and far fetched which disagreed with pretty much every thing else the movie had to offer.

hmmm.....I don't recall the movie making too great an effort in trying to get its messages and purpose across to the viewers with overwrought and complex storylines, man. It somewhat might've been frustrating for some to maybe sympathize with the characters due to the fact that we don't get much of a background story on 'em......we're forced to take them in as they are at that specific moment......I can dig that.

I don't know, man. Maybe this butterfly effect concept of how things that seem innocent and inconsequential at first can later turn out to be so influential and immense can be too staggering, but it's far from being impossible or ludicrous.

You've got a girl living in an isolated and technologically exhausting society who's going through the difficulties of you know, normal teenage life coupled with the fact of also being a mute....I mean, what was so unrealistic about her scenario and the decisions that she made?

Then you've got the two brothers testing out the capabilities and range of their new rifle......as kids, and most humans are prone to, they make a stupid decision targeting a bus that seemed from their vantage point, a world away....I mean, it was a bad call, but not entirely implausible....I could definitely see myself in their shoes with my brother, either egging 'em on to see if he could hit that moving bus, or bragging of being able to do it myself. It wasn't in their intentions to injure or kill anyone, man. It was just their ego at that age that impaired their judgement.

The couple with the marital problems.....what was their far-fetched decision? That they travelled outside their country to get away and solve their issues?

-
And then finally there's the desperate mother trying to make it to her son's wedding....okay, so she also made a seriously faulty decision in taking those two kids that weren't hers over the border, but I still don't think that it was a completely far out action.....alright, so she's an illegal, but she's got her forged documents to cover the border hassles, and folks without proper paper work cross back and forth all the time. She had her story down, had the kid's passports with her and all, but her overly paranoid, drunk and irrational nephew made an absolute mess of the situation for her.....she had no control over that. There's no way in hell that she was gonna miss her son's wedding.....just a tragic situation.

oh btw, what didn't you like about the portrayals of immigrant folk? I thought that the maid was played in a very compassionate and heartbreaking manner. It's just that she was imperiled by her nephew and those cold-hearted border folk....but similar misfortunes and tragedies to that one happen all the time all over the world where folks move to other places for a better life and stuff.....other than that , I thought that her character was a beautiful soul, man. It's just that she was with an erratic and drunk nephew at the time....I don't know.....did that scene hit close to home for you or something, man?

In the end. I'm not claiming that it was a flawless and perfect movie, but on the whole, I felt that it was a flick that was beautifully woven together considering how fragmented everything is at the start and the acting was just so genuine and intense, you know? It was very ambitious in its intentions, maybe fell a bit short on some of 'em, but overall, still a noteworthy flick.

Rush Hour 3

Great movie as expected. Well, I thought at times they were trying too hard, but overall I really enjoyed it. They know how to keep people entertained with those type of movies. It also had a lot of funny moments, which was definitely cool. Gotta love the Chris Tucker and Carlos*y Chan duo. I definitely wouldn't mind seeing a Rush Hour 4 as long as it stays up to par. (Y)

I should of been more clear. The decisions that the characters make which are critical to the story I can definitely see happening in real life, however little things bothered me. For example, the maid living the kids under a tree to go find help or the older of the two brothers who started shooting back at the cops for no reason at all, or the tourist on the bus with Pitt and his woman who got all f*cking pissed about the situation, I doubt any middle aged westerner would confront another middle aged westerner in such a situation and act like a total dick about it, especially when his wife was in critical condition. Little things like that pissed the hell out of me and overshadowed the things you mentioned.

I just thought they were made to look stupid and irresponsible. No it didn't hit home or anything but I could see how somebody from that culture could be angry at the film from that stand point. Even the "beautiful soul" maid that you talk about ends up getting it on with that guy at her sons wedding so...

Does it matter which brother shot at the cops? I mean really does it? That was a braindead decision, why the f*ck shoot at a cop if he hasn't shot at you? Put the damn weapon down and put your hands up. If the father had taught them anything it would have been some sort of appreciation for the law, no matter how corrupt they are, they are the law and you can't start a war with them because you most likely will lose. Then again the father was a moron because he left a bunch of kids with a rifle.

About the maid, umm why couldn't she take the kids with her? Being a strong willed Mexican woman that she was I'm sure she would of been able to carry those feathery children until they were rested enough to walk, leavin them under a tree with coyotes everywhere in the middle of the desert was retarded, I'm sorry but you can't change my mind about that.

About the tourists you make a decent point but still I doubt anybody in real life would be that cruel to an injured person. The pissed of guy was being afraid for no reason, what danger did that little piece of s*it of a town pose to them? Had they been threatened in any way for him to get all into Pitts face and tell me that his life matters more than the life of a woman who was dying of a bullet wound?

again, your memory is failing you, but who shot at the cops is important in the context of that scene. It wouldn've made sense if it was the older brother because he was the more sensible and cowardly of the two, but the younger one was more reckless, combatant and gun-happy. Also, from what I remember, they were on their way to giving the gun back to it's original owner before being spotted by that victimized lady and then being sprayed with bullets......the kid only picked up his gun and fired back at those cops after seeing his brother get shot in the back.....before that, it was in the hands of the father on it's way back to being returned.....so the cops shot at them with the intentions of killing them first......he felt that they were gonna just annihilate them no matter what, so he might aswell die protecting his father and brother..........I don't see any brainlessness or irrationality in that.....especially from a kid his age..........And btw, how do you know that their father didn't teach them about proper ethical and moral values. I think that the father was a good, pious man who was only doing what he thought was best for his family. These kids are coming of age, they're in a remote village, their livestock was being thinned down by Carlos*als and the such.......so what's the best solution for all this? A gun......again, I don't see anything moronic or preposterous about that. Watched 2 documentaries yesterday, one about AHD (I think), which was fairly informative and not as boring as most documentaries I come across, and Jesus Camp. 4th time I've watched, still great, still informative, still entertaining, still horrifying. Recommended, and I am recommending a documentary, something I would very rarely do.

If he needed to protect his f*cking livestock so much at least tell your wife to watch them don't just let your kids go crazy and do whatever they want. It would of been alright if they were maybe 15-16 but those kids were far from it and as a result of being allowed to have that gun the whole f*cking mess started so how in the world can you defend their father's decision to allow them to have the gun?

No I'm not, I'm just saying there are a million better decisions that she could have taken that would have been better. Maybe I would empathize with them more had the director done a better job of building up their characters but the fact is by the end of the movie I didn't give a rats ass what happened to any of them because they were all stupid f*cks who deserved to die.

go watch the movie again.....your recollection of certain key incidents is way off! The cops see them, they see cops, cops start shooting at them when they attempt to get away, then they hide behind some boulders, cops continue to shoot (attempting to kill em imo), older brother stupidly gets up, gets shot, younger brother picks up gun and then proceeds to shoot back to defend his father and brother.....all the while they're begging the cops to stop shooting, but no one's listening. Dude.....a sacred cow (A White person....and a woman at that) had been shot.....there's no way those cops were gonna let em see any form of proper justice.....they wanted to off em right there and then and bury their asses up on those mountains.

sheesh.....could you come off this anti-gun rhetoric for just a second? It's clouding your views considerably. Guns are very common in that culture, especially as it pertains to rural, village folk and their shepherd boys. These kids (in those sorts of environments) are taught to handle and shoot guns for protection, sport and hunting at around the ages that the kids in the movie were portrayed.....preteenish to early teens. How can you conclude and make the judgement that the father was an immoral and vile human being just because he engaged his sons in a sort of rite of passage into manhood by equipping them with a gun for security and the defence of their sheep? Did he instruct them to shoot the gun carelessly at anything that came into their sight? Clearly not. You're just doggedly clinging on to their age when it's evident that there's probably lots of kids out there in that culture who get guns at around the same age who don't even try to shoot at an inanimate object let alone a human being.........these kids just so happened to have made a stupid mistake, man.

You're being unreasonable and deliberately thickheaded, man. Either you don't know much about that culture and their way of life, or you're just continuing on with this charade just for the fun of it. It's the boys' duty to tend to the herding of the livestock....YES, EVEN AS YOUNG AS EIGHT or so, alright? Secondly, the mother and the daughter most likely have other womanly roles set by their cultures that they have to take care of. You can't be expecting them to be dealing with the domestic matters such as taking care of the toddlers, laundry, cooking, cleaning and all sorts of other **** and then go out and herd hundreds of stock all over that expansive and rugged land, man. These boys were well within the age of being able to responsibly tend to the family's stock. it's easy to defend the father's decision to purchase that gun because their isolated circumstance necessitates that they protect both themselves and their edible beasts as best as can be done......you have to remember that the father was away on a trip to the city on the day that this incident occurred....normally, I suspect that he'd be checking up on them from time to time to see that they were not slacking off and ****.

No I'm not, I'm just saying there are a million better decisions that she could have taken that would have been better. Maybe I would empathize with them more had the director done a better job of building up their characters but the fact is by the end of the movie I didn't give a rats ass what happened to any of them because they were all stupid f*cks who deserved to die.

boy are you an angry and hostile sonofabitch.....I should've known better than to start up a civil debate with someone whose original reply was so adamant and perversely rigid.....this movie seems to have struck a chord with you in the most negative of ways, man.....I can't help it if you didn't connect with any of the characters or the issues surrounding the movie

Yeah on a deserted road in the middle of the desert, nobody in the town did anything but help them.

again, it was one or two individuals who were behaving in that manner....the rest of em were only following along....just because no one did (in their warped and panicked minds) them any harm at that moment doesn't mean that there wasn't a potential for it to happen the longer they lingered on in that nondescript village

Well actually you did.

GOOD GOD! I'm trying my best to refrain from personal attacks here, man, but you're mercilessly baiting me with your pointless and misguided replies.

Wow, I thought I was the only person that could be bothered to argue with Yossarian.

For the record, I found Babel to be hugely disappointing, but I've probably said this already somewhere.

I'm still waiting for my Babel CD to work.

Watched The Pacifier. Wasn't as bad you'd expect, decent film to pass the time, fairly annoying at times, but it's quite alright.
