thanks for ur feedback... and i gotta say.. it really is a shame to see cpu lose the ball so easily... you can basically stand still and cpu will run directly into the tackle... im working on trying to correct that..

have you had any luck trying to correct this problem? i went through last night and tried to increase the "mark ball related" parameters. didn't see much difference on the tackling. i tried to increase the EVALBALL delays also, but didn't see much difference. maybe some value needs to be turned negative or something. i tried increasing these :
AUTO_TACKLE_MAX_CONTACT_POINTS
AUTO_TACKLE_CONTACT_FRAME_MAX
BLOCK_TACKLE_MAX_CONTACT_POINTS
BLOCK_TACKLE_CONTACT_FRAME_MAX

and i did notice some more variety in the tackling. like sometimes i'd only get a piece of the ball, would over-run the ball, and the cpu would maintain possession. but then sometimes still the cpu will dribble straight ahead into tackles. that's good but it also leads to a lot of weird zig-zaging defenders when the cpu is moving with the ball and you're holding down the tackle pressure buttons.

playing with a lesser team (players with 50s and 60s ratings) against a good cpu team (players with 80s or 90s ratings), when i try to tackle them about 50% the time, they'll change direction before i tackle and i'll over-run them. it is nice to see the cpu make some smart moves with the ball, but it doesn't happen often enough to really give you that sense of satisfaction when you make a tackle. in fifa 10, defending mostly consists of switching players and holding the pressure buttons. (not much left analog stick skill-based tackling) you do have you pay attention to where your defenders are, so it is definitely tactical, but in real soccer you won't have nearly the amount of tackle-turnovers against good teams that you see in fifa 10 pc. maybe increasing dribble speed penalty further will slow down how quickly the tackles develop, because perhaps then it'll take more time to cover ground as a dribbler.

there are times where the cpu will receive the ball, and when you start to pressure-tackle, the cpu player will look-up and make a decision to avoid the tackle. it's nice to see, and there are times where the cpu has the possession for over 30 seconds (passing back, running laterally). if there were a parameter in there to really slow down those defenders (how fast they move, and how quick they closedown tacklers), it would add a lot to the gameplay. because then you couldn't just gain possession anytime you wanted. you'd have to actually do what real defenses do, and try to anticipate how the cpu will try to score.

we should have a soccer game where if you play a good team like Argentina with a lower-rated team, there should be some games where Argentina will hold the ball for minutes on end, slowly making their way up the field, and as a defense, be patient and try to actually set traps for the cpu. with the easy tackling, there's not much of that. (except to switch your team mentality to defensive, which does work) it's just too easy to steal the ball and counter attack the cpu, that's why most of my 90 min matches end up with me having like 50+ shots and the cpu only like 10 shots. (not shots on target, just overall shots) the 10 shots the cpu has are quality chances, and they sometimes end up with multiple goals, but throughout a long match, their shots on target are so rare it's usually a result of me mis-timing the switching players and pressure buttons. and most of my chances are a result of those turnovers, so if this problem could be solved, user shots per game would go way down, which would be much more realistic. they would go down because cpu would have longer possessions and be spending more time in the opposing teams half. (more corners, less user counter-attacks)

my guess is probably some of the parameters that we have found and added to our gameplays may over-ride some of the original parameters in ai.ini, that may be able to better control this problem. i wish we were able to make some conclusions about the behavior of these parameters and how they affect things like tackling. (which of the added parameters override others, which of the default parameters override other default parameters, etc) if not, it'll be further trial and error. someone may strike gold one day with the tackling problem. as nice as it is to have ai.ini, it remains hard to determine how the game reads the parameters. at one point i tried to create additional POWERUP parameters, like TACKLE_POWERUP_RATE and set it to 1. i think we're all guessing, but i promise if i ever figure out the tackling, i'll let you guys know. it's the only thing holding fifa 10 pc back. everything else is fine. it's just that tackling and realistic cpu buildup. a bigger pitch might help with this, perhaps giving the cpu more open space to run towards. i even tried lowering the individual tackling ratings of the players on my team into the 10s and 20s to see if they will miss tackles more, but it didn't seem to have much of a difference. maybe the tactical awareness ratings of the cpu players could make a difference. or maybe it's turning down the speed / acceleration ratings of the players on the user team. anyone have some ideas on how we can slow-down user tackling? could going into devdata.dat and changing the values of the pressure buttons, giving it a longer delay due the trick? i'm willing to try anything at this point. it's quite possible that someone out there has an ai.ini where the pace is slower and it's harder to steal the ball from the cpu, but that ai.ini may not have the right physics, the ball may not bounce properly, etc.

there are ways to slow down the game (lowering turning speeds is one), but it seems like the more you make the game slower down to a realistic pace, the tackling becomes even easier because the cpu dribblers don't avoid or move as fast as before. (and the tacklers still tackle at the same speed) iron_dog, have you witnessed this phenomenon?

all you've said is true... and im still trying to find a solution to these probs, but i got exams so my time is kinda limited to edit FIFA..
