Samuel set for Inter

Real Madrid stopper Walter Samuel is expected to finally complete his move to Inter on Friday.

The Argentine international has been linked with the outfit for some time and he should put pen to paper on a contract later today.

Samuel is set to fly into Milan to undergo a medical and then sign a four-year deal at the San Siro.

The 26-year-old has been targeted as the club look to resolve their central defensive problems.

An agreement between the two clubs was reached earlier this week and talks over the players wages have now been completed.

The former Boca Juniors ace returns to Serie A after an absence of just a year following his departure from Roma last summer.

Samuel should also be joined by Real teammate Luis Figo at Inter, possibly as soon as over the weekend.

The Portuguese winger will leave the Spanish club this summer and has reportedly agreed a two-year deal, in principal, with the Nerazzurri.

"It is my objective to play for another two seasons," Figo stated recently. "If I can’t do that at Real then I will look elsewhere.

"Inter? They are a possibility because it would be very difficult for me to join another Spanish club."

edit: haha Inter down 3-1 to Treviso in a friendly at halftime :(

CHOUTOS, MARTINS GOALS SINK NORWICH
Friday, 29 July 2005 22:37:23

NORWICH - Goals in either half from Lampros Choutos and Obafemi Martins saw the Nerazzurri beat Norwich City 2-0 at Carrow Road and make it three England tour wins out of three.

Inter's first was the result of a slick passing move in the 32nd minute. Adriano received from Karagounis then fed through for the Greek striker to blast home after taking the Norwich defence by surprise with his run.

Mancini's men enjoyed the run of play in the opening forty-five and could have taken a bigger lead into the break. Karagounis had a shot cleared off the line in the opening minutes then Adriano had a header from Zé Maria 's cross tipped over by Green, who also blocked a low drive by Javier Zanetti before the half was out.

In a Canaries-dominated second period Inter were limited to counter-attacks, Giuseppe Favalli going close when his diagonal shot was stopped by Ward after a devastating counter-attack involving the same players who combined for the winning goal. Obafemi Martins made the result safe five minutes from time with an angled shot from the by-line after intercepting a back pass then rounding the keeper.

NORWICH CITY 0-2 INTER (HT: 0-1)

Scorer: Choutos 32, Martins 85

INTER: Julio Cesar (Bindi 87), J. Zanetti ( Favalli), Giani ( Wome), Arrieta ( Stankovic), Fautario ( Materazzi), Zé Maria (Belaid), Maa Boumsong (Bonucci), Cambiasso (Pizarro), Karagounis (Momentè 83), Choutos ( Solari), Adriano ( Martins)
Subs not used: Semenzato
Coach: Roberto Mancini

Martins and Choutos again :)

Anywayz with Samuel nearly fully signed we can now concentrate on a 5th striker. Though with Choutos doing so well, and Di Vaio cup-tied I think we should just stick with him, unless if we can sign someone better. I've heard that Genoa's Milito is a possibility.

But I'm not celebrating yet, I still haven't seen the official site announcing the deal and I still haven't seen pics of him in the Inter training shirt. But it's looking like it won't be much longer until that finally happens. Great. :rockman:

Here's the translated version of the Gazzetta article.

IT'S DONE: Samuel to Inter!

MILAN, 30 July 2005 – The negotiations are closed, an agreement has been reached. Walter Samuel is an Inter player. The official announcement is delayed until after the medical which the Argentinean will undergo on Monday, but last night, just before 9 pm, Inter and Samuel's agent have reached an agreement on the financial terms. Not an easy task, Massimo Moratti invested 16 million euros for the player and over 35 millions for his wages.

"We are delighted", said Samuel's agent Roberto Rodriguez, just after having spoken to Samuel about the deal (the player was in Madrid). The positive outcome of the negotiations was never in doubt, but the agreement was delayed for a couple of days.

Anyway, in the end, the hard work, mostly on a diplomatic level, done by Marco Branca and Lele Oriali, together with Real Madrid officials Bronzetti and Tirri, has paid off and starting from yesterday, Samuel is an Inter player.

Today Samuel will collect his belongings from the Ciudad Deportiva and will the head for Milan. He's scheduled to arrive tomorrow afternoon, evening at the latest.

On Monday he will sign a contract that will make him an Inter player until 2009. What made this possible was yet another meeting in the office of Inter official Ghelfi. Inter will pay 16 millions in 4 payments (3 millions now, the other 13 divided in 3 payments). Samuel will earn 4 millions per season.

The positive outcome of the deal became evident when Real signed Brazilian striker Baptista from Sevilla, which made offloading Samuel a must for Real. Yesterday Samuel was training in Madrid. He did not speak to the press but hinted that he was waiting for a phone call from his agent in Italy. And the call came just after 9 pm. If Samuel is very happy, so is Mancini, who's got the defender he needed, and in time to use him in the Champions League qualifier (there's time until 4 August for the list).

==========================================

Finally, everything has been wrapped up and all that's left is for him to be officially presented as an Inter player on Monday. I can't wait. Finally our CB problem has been resolved. With Cordoba and Samuel in the back, Pizarro and Cambiasso in the middle, and a healthy Adriano and Martins upfront, with the rest of the crew, we will set fire to all levels of competition.

Samuel sparks shopping spree
Saturday 30 July, 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Walter Samuel is set to complete his move to Inter on Monday, but reports suggest it’s only the start with Luis Figo, Fabrizio Miccoli and Diego Milito to follow.

The Nerazzurri are traditionally the most active Italian club on the transfer market and this summer looks to be no different. Having already captured Udinese’s David Pizarro, Brescia’s Pierre Wome and Real Madrid man Santiago Solari, the arrival of his teammate Samuel only awaits official confirmation now.

The 26-year-old Argentine defender is said to have agreed a £10.4m move – split into four instalments – with a four-year contract worth £2.7m per season net, plus bonuses. The early completion of the transfer will allow the former Roma star to be registered for the Champions’ League preliminary round tie against Shakhtar Donetsk.

However, the Press believes this is only the tip of the iceberg for another big-spending summer at the San Siro. The links with Luis Figo are no secret and it’s reported that a deal will be struck for Samuel’s Real Madrid colleague over the weekend.

The Portuguese international and former World Player of the Year has been offered a £2.2m per season contract for two years, though Valencia and Liverpool are also maintaining their interest in the player.

The ready cash to bring in Figo should come from Edgar Davids (who is finalising his medical with Tottenham) and Francesco Coco (currently travelling towards Amsterdam to sign for Ajax).

Yet there are even more surprises in store for the Nerazzurri, as according to today’s papers in the Peninsula, the club is also in talks with Fabrizio Miccoli and Diego Milito.

It’s claimed that Juventus director general Luciano Moggi has offered Miccoli to Inter in exchange for midfielder Cristiano Zanetti – a favourite of Coach Fabio Capello’s from their days together at Roma. Miccoli has made it clear he doesn’t wish to stay in Turin and was bitterly disappointed at leaving Fiorentina following his season-long co-ownership spell.

Milito is the Argentine hitman who helped take Genoa to the top flight with 33 goals in 59 games, but if the club is demoted to Serie C1 as a result of the match-fixing scandal with Venezia, the player may not wish to remain.

His contract is also up for renewal and it is reported that the striker requested £700,000 per season rather than the £370,000 currently offered.

==========================================

Even though I'm against Figo joining, since we do have Stankovic and Karagounis, I must say at 32 he still has 1 or 2 years of top class stuff left in him. I also guess with him joining, it will only boost the number of fans the club has, and also strengthen our number 1 position in China, and in the rest of Asia. I guess he will be signed in only a couple of days, so there's not much to be said.

For our 5th place spot, I guess Choutos is out of the question, since Moratti will be loaned out. So there's Miccoli and Milito. I haven't actually seen Milito play, but having such a high scoring tally is always a good sign of a striker capabilities. He's also Argentine which would help him settle in quickly.

Miccoli on the other hand has impressed the few times I've seen him. But I truly don't believe that Juve would want to trade him for CZ, especially with the acquistition of Vieira. There's no space for him.

Anywayz I'm overjoyed that Samuel has been signed, but I expect more moves will be made, especially on the selling side of things, before the summer ends. Coco has been linked to Ajax/Everton/Olympiakos, and according to reports he is actually on his way to Ajax to sign with them.
Andy VDM is also leaving, with Tottenham being his most likely destination. Though what about Kily? There's certainly no space for him now in the squad. But he seems to be a favorite of Mancini's so I'm guessing he will stick around.
