Figo returns to the portuguese NT

Back in the day, Joao Pinto was a better player than both Figo and Rui Costa! In his prime he was a joy to watch, some of his runs/goals were amazing...

btw, I doubt it, but by any chance does anyone have video of Joao Pinto's run vs. Germany were he dribbled past like 4 players, then had his shot saved? Was from a WC98 qualifying game..

Rui Costa better than Figo? Plz and you talk about some members being biased.
Although Rui Costa was a good player, he was never in Figo´s level. Just compare what both have achieved. Figo was player of the year and won the Balon d´Or. He is way more consistent and influencial in any team. Figo is a benchwarmer player since April or something, Rui Costa has been a bench player for 2 years now.
It´s unbelievable how ppl can forget what a player has done for his country just because he comes from a rival club. I must be the exception because i support a small but tradicional club and have no links to the three giants. Im grateful for what both players did for our Nt but Figo was clearly our main figure in the last decade.
I will never forget when Rui Costa was sent off against Germany, giving the oportunity for a corrupt Marc Batta to give him a red card. The referee was the main culprit but Rui Costa sure gave him a chance to "dent" our chances for going to the Wc 2000 with that stupid behaviour.

Ps. Funky i also got tickets for the Superbock SuperRock. Tinha mesmo de ir depois de ter gramado um semana académica aqui em Coimbra com Alanis Morissette e Cake. Preciso de rock para recuperar a minha sanidade mental, depois do histerismo mainstream.

Well, say what you want but Rui isn't as famous as Figo just because Figo moved to a bigger club soon. And i'm NOT TALKING THIS JUST BECAUSE I'M BENFIQUISTA.

Every f*cking game in Euro 2000 when i was seeing the TV it appeared the message "Figo & Companhia", when Rui was much more influent IMHO.

I'm not saying Figo wasn't a great player aswell, i believe both are at the same level but with different carachteristics. Although, Figo always had much more media hype, wich is extremely unfair.

I do respect Figo for all he did for us, but i do believe aswell that this was not the best attitude, "taking a break" ?! Please, you are the one that should give us a break, it's like putting everybody asking for him to comeback, do me a favour, decide yourself, you either leave or you stay, you don't take a break. At least Rui Costa knew when he should leave, and he leave defenitelyl, that's a man's attitude. TBH, i never liked Figo that much, although admiting he was a great player, a legend in the field.

BTW, great Euro he made, Rui Costa played more in the few minutes he had.

I still remember the AWESOME game Rui made against England in Euro 2000... But the man was Figo...

Good luck in your return though...

a person cannot give his opinion on this forum because it's always attacked with always the same **** arguments of being biased always by the same users and some that critisize me are models of unbiased posts. it's my opinion. period. if you ask to other football fans, i will not be the only thinking that way. and when in my post i say that i forgot what Figo did to our country?

I'm definately happy to hear the news. I really don't understand why some of my countrymen dislike Figo. He is our best of the last decade, cut him some slack people.

Hey I think Figo is a great player undoubtly, what i dislike it's his attitude regarding the NT.

Btw, without making this a Figo vs. Rui Costa thread, what's the problem in someone saying he prefered Rui Costa over Figo ? They play in different positions and are different players but does Figo have the same vision Rui Costa has ? Not talking about his great passes. In terms of technique both have great ball skills capabilities, altough Figo dribbles better, also bcause he is or was faster than Rui. Both shooting acc. is even, both great free kick takers.. and so on.. We should be happy we have/had those two in the NT.

Like i said, what I don't like is Figo's attitude, Rui Costa stayed 1 year more in Benfica because he wanted to help Benfica, he really loved and loves the club, knowing he had proposals from major european clubs, and that he would earn much more money, Benfica couldn't afford to pay him. Of course he than left to Fiorentina after that year he helped us to be champions, but few players would do what he did. Look at this and than at Figo's controversial exit from Barcelona, where he was held as hero, saying the day before he wouldn't leave the club bla bla.. It's this type of attitude i can't stand, if you like it than what can I say ? I stay with my opinion, you stay with yours.

Is anybody really that surprised? I've been awaiting Figo and Nedved to come out of retirement in time for WC 06. The only thing Im surprised about is that Figo didnt wait for next season to return

Zidane's a maybe, but since theyve been so sh*tty in his absence I wouldnt be shocked.

Too bad Maldini never reconsidered (N)

Rui Costa is/was one of the best playmakers in the game. João Pinto was always an underachiever except when he really felt like playing, when he had a good game he was unbelievable.

But Figo is definitely one of the best players ever to kick a ball. Rui Costa, Joao Pinto don't even deserve to be named in the same sentence really, Figo was always a different class. If you don't agree with that sorry but you are wrong.

Figo on his prime was just completely unstoppable. He never was the fastest of players but he always went through. I think his career in Barça was very overlooked. He should have had much more awards and earlier in his career. I know he was just a winger but really he could take on 3 or 4 players with ease. I'm sure any Barcelona fan that has moved on and forgot what he did will agree with this.

He definitely wasn't below Zidane in his prime, the difference is that Zidane always shone in the decisive moments like the finals and the big games. And that big game factor is a must for reputation purposes.

It really hurts my feelings to see so many portuguese people trashtalking him after what he's done for us. He always carried the team on his back when it was needed and if the rest of the team had half his quality he definitely would have won something internationally.

I don't know if you were refering to me or not but, like i said obviously i reckon Figo as a world class player and i'm grateful for what he has done in the NT, but really, that doens't give him the right to say " I'm tired of the NT" and than "Now i need it, i shall return" . The whole thing about "taking a brake" is ridiculous, you either retire or not, and even worse is returning like he's doing, now that he doens't play in Madrid, helping the team being a secundary issue. And i don't think any Barcelona fan or they must be very few who forgot what Figo done to club, disrespecting everyone there.

Also, i think Eusebio should return to the NT after what he's done for us :fool:

what does he need from the NT? Reputation? Are you kidding me? The guy is bigger than our country itself. Even today if you go to somewhere in Asia and ask someone if they know Portugal, the reply you get most of the times is: Yes, Figo!

The day he leaves Real Madrid he won't have trouble finding a top flight club, I can guarantee you that.

I'm sure he won't, but than why isn't he playing in Real ?
And sure you're right when you say Figo is famous but so was Eusebio at his time. You don't really think that what Figo wants with his return firstly is to help the team, do you ? Not really with a serious attitude, more like wanting to prove he still is at his level.. who knows he may win a Worldcup ..That isn't correct to return to the NT in this way.

Are you proud that people associate Portugal to Figo ? I was actually proud when, for instance, in Argentina I was asked where I was from and by telling I was portuguese the person imedeatly said she really liked Saramago.

Basicaly, he's defending his interests whereas he should be defending the team's, or you deny that ?

He isn't playing in Real because he probably doesn't fit Luxa's playing style and he's set to leave.

Of course he wants to help us, he plays in the NT because he enjoys it, he plays for pride in his country. The same pride that made him cry in every year we got kicked out of an international tournament.

He took some time off because he was playing like 50ish matches a year and that was starting to notice in his physical condition. There's nothing wrong with that.

I'd be pissed if he only returned for the tournament itself really, because he'd take another player's spot. Another player that worked hard in the qualification. (like what happened in the Baia/Ricardo situation in WC2002).
You'd rather have Simao playing instead of him? I think Simao is the player who fits the way you described Figo earlier. Zero passion playing for the National team. He had more than enough chances and he never delivered. Time to bench him, although he's arguably the best player of our domestic league.

Oh and I hate Saramago really. C*cky bastard.

i agree with Virgo on that point. he returned in the middle of the qualification so he could not be accused of play for the NT only in personal favour. he could had return only before the World Cup and would be accepted. and yes, he is a great adding to the squad. he will be the captain that we missed since he, Rui Costa and Couto left. a voice of command in the field.

Ok, i'll only wright this, sry it's in portuguese, but i didn't seem to make my point clear.

O Salazar tb tinha imenso amor plo pais dele, amava portugal..
