Brazil Calls Up Players for Copa América
Lima, June 9, 2004
Carlos Alberto Parreira, Brazilian National Team coach, announced today the list of 22 players who will take part in the Copa América, in July, in Peru. Amongst the players called up, twelve athletes ply their trade in Brazil and ten abroad, being nine in Europe. From the last list disclosed by Parreira, for the World Cup Qualifiers, nine players have been selected again: Júlio César, Juan, Cris, Edu, Felipe, Alex, Júlio Batista, Adriano and Luis Fabiano. Among the other players called up, the novelty is Palmeiras striker Vágner Love, who has never been called for international duty before. Top scorer of the São Paulo State Championship, Vágner has started negotiations with CSKA Moscow, from Russia, for 10 million dollars. The absentees are Ronaldo, Ronaldinho Gaúcho, Kaká, Roberto Carlos, Cafu and Dida, who were given a rest by the coach for this competition.
Brazil will make their debut in the Copa América, on July 8th , against Chile, in Arequipa. The Brazilian National squad is in Group C, alongside Costa Rica, Paraguay and Chile. In 2001, Brazil were eliminated in the quarterfinals by Honduras, under the command of manager Luiz Felipe Scolari.
