In actual fact Southampton got promoted to the First Division in 1966, finishing runners-up as you said, but they have experienced relegation from the top flight.

That was in 1974 when they finished third bottom, and they regained their place in 1978 when they won promotion again.

Everton were last relegated in 1952, but they returned in 1954, in the season in which Liverpool went down.

For about the 5 squillionth time. Arsenal & Everton HAVE been relegated.

Southampton have never been relegated from the top flight BUT were relegated in 1953 from the 2nd to the 3rd.

I did mention above that Southampton were relegated from Division 1 to Division 2 in 1974...

I found that info from their official site, by the way (H)

saints been in div1 66-74

only relegated coz format was changed to three teams being relegated

then 78 - present (div.1 and founding members of premiership)

thought '78 was the 1st yr we were in top flight

I say demoted and not relegated because they finished high enough.

Milan and Lazio were relegated to Serie B in 1980 after a betting scandal. Milan won Serie B 1980/81 but finished in 14th place (out of 16 teams) in Serie A 1981/82 and were relegated once again. But once again Milan managed to take the step back to Serie A immediately and have stayed there ever since. Lazio returned to Serie A in 1983.

I think Parma were promoted to Serie A for the first time in 1990, so they've never been relegated from the top division.

Edit: Lazio were relegated again in 1985 and played in Serie B until 1988 when they returned to Serie A.

At the end of the season it was decided that the League would be expanded to 22 clubs. Instead of keeping the two clubs that finished bottom, a vote was taken. Woolwich Arsenal, who finished 5th in the Second Division, gained promotion to the First Division at the expense of Tottenham Hotspur who were relegated. Woolwich Arsenal then moved to North London (dropping the Woolwich in their name) to become local rivals for Tottenham.

Chelsea were relegated but voted back in.

Aberdeen have never been relegated (H) although we should have faced a play off (not relegation!) when we finnished bottom a few years ago but falkirks staduim was too mince for them to come up so there was no play off (H) we're entering 101 years without being relegated (H)
