I still think UEFA should have gone one further and not give 3rd placed teams in the Champions League groups a parachuting to the UEFA Cup.

It will never happen because UEFA does not want to have Matchday 6 Matches that are completely meaningless, if say the top two spots in a group are already determinded by the last matchday.

Diplomatic slyballs. i hate the idea of a breakaway g14 related league but sometimes i want it once the smaller european teams start gettin tossed into cl.

nah, this isn't completely bad, a lot o 'smaller' big clubs, specially the russian ones have been gettin better. and the sooner that those clubs start to improve to a level where they can consistently pull off 'upsets' then the better cos that improves the quality of the competition in the long run by improvin european football as a whole at a faster rate.

Dude, look at at the CL this season. Olympiakos and Fenerbahce are in the last 16.

Since the CL has switched to the one group stage format in 2005-2006, 0 teams outside of Western Europe qualified for the last 16 until this season. It's a sign of improvement for sure.

about fenerbahce, they were waiting for this time...i mean ; being in last 16 team.they worked for this mission many years..and finally ; they completed their mission..they are right because they are growing up evryday ;)

about their next mission ; they just want to be successful after next matches..

but in 5 years or maybe 8 they can be =>porto, lyon, bayern mun.<= or much powerful..they are going on their way really clever in Turkey and Europe..

thanks to my team for they lived us that amazing things for the first time.

take care all ...

sorry mate, but the switch to one group stage was made in 2003/04, and both Lokomotiv Moskva, and Sparta Praha made it to the last 16 that season ... but you're right about the fact that the last 16 in both 05/06 and 06/07 were solely made up of Western European teams ...

I've enjoyed Fenerbahçe this season ... I really hope that Barça don't draw them on Dec. 21st ... hopefully Fener can go far (and lay waste to English teams in the process, if we're talking about ideal situations) ... even Shakhtar looked good early, but lost their fizz in a hurry ...

That's right, I actually meant to put 04/05 instead of 05/06 (and even that would have left out one season :D). What can you expect from a post at 2:30am :(
