Group Four preview

Nigeria captain Jay-Jay Okocha will not be available for his country

With just a two-point margin at the top of the table, Nigeria know only a victory in Rwanda Sunday will guarantee they stay ahead of the pack.

But the Super Eagles will have to do it without several key Europe-based players including captain Jay-Jay Okocha, strikers Yakubu Ayegbeni and John Utaka as well as midfielder Wilson Oruma and defender Joseph Enakarhire.

Coach Christian Chukwu has been forced to call-up players with little experience on the big stage as replacements such as midfielder Paul Obiefule of Danish club Viborg FC and Italy-based Uche Udechukwu.

Meanwhile Rwanda's Swedish coach Roger Palmgren is looking to eight overseas-based players to help them beat the Super Eagles.

"We badly need to win this game to brighten our chances of qualifying for the Nations Cup in Egypt," said Palmgren.

GROUP FOUR FIXTURES
Zimbabwe v Gabon (Sun 1300 GMT)
Angola v Algeria (Sun 1430 GMT)
Rwanda v Nigeria (Sun 1400 GMT)

The Wasps will however be without Belgium-based Desire Mbonabucya, who captained the country's to its first Nations Cup in Tunisia in last year, amidst rumours he has retired from international football.

However Nigeria midfielder Garba Lawal knows the harm their hosts are capable of inflicting.

"It's going to be tough even though some people think we are going to have it easy," he recently told BBC Sport.

Meanwhile second-placed Angola will be seeking to sustain the pressure on the leaders when they host Algeria.

Angola welcome back Benfica striker Pedro Mantorras

The home side welcome back injury-plagued striker Pedro Mantorras for the match in Luanda.

It is the first call-up for the Portugal-based striker, who is also a former Young African Footballer of the Year, for more than three years.

Mantorras is expected to win only his fourth cap in a front line bolstered by the return of captain Akwa, a former Benfica player, and Freddy from Portugal's União Leiria.

All three missed last week's friendly in Tunisia which Angola lost 4-1, but are included in the 23-man squad for the Group Four qualifier.

Algeria coach Ali Fergani has left out France-based midfielder Ouadah Abdenacer after he refused to join his team-mates for their last qualifier.

Also missing is Belgium-based defender Samir Beloufa because of injury while Nadir Belhadji has been allowed to stay with his club Sedan who play Auxerre in the French Cup final on Saturday. Zimbabwe, who are in third place, host Gabon as they continue their quest for a second consecutive Cup of Nations appearance. The Warriors dream could be blunted by the absence striker Benjamin Mwaruwari, who has been by permitted by coach Charles Mhlauri to play in for Auxerre in the French cup final.

Essien out of Ghana team

Michael Essien is out of Ghana's squad to play Burkina Faso

Ghana will be without midfielder Michael Essien for Sunday's 2006 World Cup qualifier against the Stallions of Burkina Faso in Kumasi.

Essien, who helped Lyon to win the French title last month, arrived in Accra on Wednesday with an injured shoulder that prevented him from joining the rest of the squad.

The Black Stars' doctor Martin Engmann confirmed to BBC Sport that Essien had phoned to tell him about the injury.

"Michael told me that he has a shoulder injury that he called a 'partial dislocation of the shoulder' and he couldn't play against Burkina Faso," he said.

"He also told me he would be returning to France on Monday to get treatment on the injury with the aim of being fit for the qualifier in South Africa in two weeks time."

The French player's player of the year missed Ghana's 1-1 draw against the DR Congo through suspension.

Essien is the second injury problem that has hit Ratomir Dujkovic's squad after German-based midfielder Hans Adu Sarpei pulled out with a hamstring injury.

Despite the problems Dujkovic is confident Ghana can secure all three points on Sunday.

"I saw Burkina Faso play in a friendly in Lome and they are so good," he said. "But as I always say Ghana has got quality and we can always win if the players understand what it means and are prepared to fight for it." Ghana are currently in Group Two, three points behind leaders South Africa and two adrift of second-placed Cape Verde.

Libya 0-0 Ivory Coast

Ivory Coast's World Cup hopes took a knock as they could manage only a goalless draw away to Libya.

The Elephants dominated the play, but found it difficult to break down Libya's packed defence until the later stages of the game.

When they did create chances, the Ivorians snatched at them - Didier Drogba twice came close, as did Siaka Tiene and Aruna Dindane.

However, the draw maintains their lead in Group Three of the 2006 qualifiers.

Libya made the better start to the game, but proved reluctant to push many players into the Ivorian penalty area.

The North Africans have yet to lose at home in this qualifying campaign, and they should have got a dream start 15 minutes in, but Walid Osman screwed his shot wide.

After that, the visitors took over the game, and Drogba twice came close to scoring a spectacular goal.

On both occasions the Chelsea striker knocked the ball to himself before launching an acrobatic overhead kick.

The first effort flew over, and the second was hit straight at the goalkeeper.

Ivory Coast increased their domination in the second half, with the Libyans reduced to occasional counter attacks.

Drogba missed a fine chance halfway through the second period, heading over from the enterprising right-back Marc Zoro's precise cross.

In the final minutes the Elephants wasted two further great opportunities to snatch a precious away win.

First, midfielder Tiene ruined one of Ivory Coast's few truly impressive moves with an awful finish. Then Dindane pushed the ball past the goalkeeper, but could not catch up with it before it rolled out of play for a goal-kick

Chukwu blasts absent stars

Chukwu blasts absent stars

Nigeria coach Christian Chukwu is unhappy with captain Jay Jay Okocha

Nigeria coach Christian Chukwu has slammed captain Jay-Jay Okocha and forward Yakubu Ayegbeni for their failure to travel to Rwanda for Sunday's World Cup qualifier.

The two England-based players did not turn up to the Super Eagles training camp in London earlier this week and both missed the flight out to Kigali on Wednesday.

Neither Nigeria captain Okocha nor Yakubu, who has scored two goals in the Super Eagles' Group Four campaign, have contacted Chukwu to explain their absence.

"Yakubu can go to hell, we don't need him," the Nigeria coach told BBC Sport.

"He doesn't have any reason for not being here - but we don't have much problem in attack because Obafemi Martins, Nwankwo Kanu and Stephen Makinwa can replace him."

"We are satisfied with those we have."

Chukwu's comments throw Yakubu's future international career with the Super Eagles into some doubt.

The pair have clashed before, when Yakubu was one of three Nigerian players sent home from the 2004 African Cup of Nations finals for indiscipline.

Nor is it the first time that Okocha has been conspicuous by his absence for a 2006 World Cup qualifier.

The midfielder missed the Super Eagles' trip to Angola in June last year, whereupon Nigeria suffered their only defeat of their Group Four qualifying campaign so far.

"As a captain, Okocha should be here leading his players," Chukwu explained.

"I still don't know why he's not here but I want to get to him and tell him that I¿m totally disappointed."

"He's not given me any reason for his absence but I don't think there's any reason he can give that would excuse him not being here."

"Because he is not injured - he is fit - and he knows it's an important World Cup qualifier."

While Chuwku explained that Okocha's absence would hand a chance to younger players keen to impress for the Super Eagles, he did not rule out taking disciplinary action against his absent captain.

"Both the Nigeria Football Association and I want to talk to him," the coach said. "If we don't get a satisfactory answer for his absence when we do, we might take action." Nigeria lead Group Four with thirteen points, two clear of second-placed Angola, while Rwanda prop up the table with four points.

Tunisia grab their first away win

Reigning African champions Tunisia beat their hosts Botswana 3-1 in Gaborone on Saturday in Group Five of the 2006 World Cup qualifiers.

Mogogi Gabonamong ignited the hopes of the home fans with a 10th minute strike after the visiting defence failed to clear properly.

The visitors rallied and got an equaliser ten minutes later through England-based midfielder Mehdi Nafti.

Brazilian-born Francileudo dos Santos gave Tunisia the lead just before half-time with a strike from outside the box.

Midway through the second half, El Abdi Wissem connected with a Nafti free kick to give the visitors their first away win of these qualifiers.

The Tunisians move to second place in Group Five, with 11 points from their six games one behind Morocco, who play Malawi later on Saturday evening.

The result leaves Botswana struggling in fifth place with six points from seven games.

Meanwhile on Sunday Kenya take on Guinea in Conakry. But the Kenyans must do with out striker Dennis Oliech, who refused to travel with the squad claiming he is owed US$1,700 by his country's football governing body. His absence is a blow to the East African country as he is the leading scorer in the African qualifying groups with six goals.
