They have never been to the World Cup, have failed to win anything for more than ten years, and did not even qualify for Tunisia 2004 - but the Elephants of Ivory Coast are being tipped as Africa's next great team.

The reason is simple.

Ivory Coast has an exceptional generation of youngsters, and a sprinkling of more established players with genuine star quality.

Just look at the names - Kolo Toure, the most improved player in Arsenal's outstanding season, Bonaventure Kalou and Kanga Akale of Auxerre, and the man voted the best player in Belgium, Anderlecht's Aruna Dindane.

These are players who would make any country in Africa proud. All are young, and yet all have put in substantial time at the cutting edge of European club football.

And significantly, that list does not include Ivory Coast's best player, Didier Drogba.

Drogba has become a genuine superstar this season.

He scored bagfuls of goals in the French League and in European competition, attracting the attention of both Chelsea and Juventus.

"He has everything it takes to be one of the best strikers in the world," is fellow forward Kalou's verdict.

Drogba himself has committed himself to spearheading his country's attack.

"I am very tired after a long season, but the prospect of helping my country get to the World Cup makes it all worthwhile," Drogba said.

'Silly things'

But there are still a number of potential traps awaiting the Elephants.

Firstly, they are in a very tough group, with both Cameroon and Egypt scrapping for the one World Cup place.

Secondly, the team is young, and missed out on Tunisia 2004 after losing a game against South Africa that was in their grasp.

And finally, Ivorian fans are concerned about the team's defence - something Toure rejects.

"That's rubbish," he told the BBC.

"Just look at the players we have: Cyrille Domoraud, Blaise Kouassi, Abdoulaye Meite, even Kolo.

"Sometimes people say silly things!"

If nothing else, it is safe to say the mood in the Ivorian camp is confident.

Drogba himself states that "Cameroon and Egypt will be scared of us."

Kalou's view, however, is more moderate.

"If you look at every position we have good players, but I don't like it when everyone is talking about us as the best players," he said.

"Eleven good players do not always make a good team. We need a really good team, where everybody fights for each other.

"I think we have spirit in our team, and if we fight hard we will go far."

Now if only Cisse played for his country Ivory Coast instead of France, Ivory Coast would have been even better.

I think Kolo Toure is better than Didier Drogba. Kolo is more versatile, can play anywhere but Didier can only play up front

Unlocking Martins

With three goals in his first two games for the Super Eagles, Obafemi Martins has succeeded in erasing doubts about his commitment to Nigeria.

Martins' refusal to play at the African Cup of Nations in Tunisia provoked outrage from fans who felt he had placed Inter Milan, his Italian club, above the country.

But his brace against Rwanda in the 5 June 2006 World Cup qualifier against Rwanda in Abuja won over the hearts of supporters that previously questioned his patriotism.

The 19-year-old Inter Milan striker told BBC Sport that becoming an integral part of the Nigerian set-up had always been a part of his career plan.

"As long as I am invited for international games that are protected by the Fifa calendar, I will always play for my country.

"The problems I had over being released for matches is an issue that I have talked about with my club and there should be no problems in the future," he said.

Possessing the ability to run past opposing defenders, who struggle to cope with his consistent bursts of acceleration, Martins also infuses a sense of urgency into the Nigerian attack, with his direct approach towards goal.

World-class service

However, the key to realising Martins' potential as a consistent marksman for the Super Eagles is the quality of passes he receives from midfield.

In Jay-Jay Okocha, who exhibits the uncanny skill of creating goalscoring chances from near-impossible situations, Martins would be gifted with a world-class provider that would make his duty a less arduous task.

Nigeria manager Christian Chukwu is cognisant of the devastating partnership both players could form over the ensuing months, despite his decision to drop Okocha for the Rwanda game.

"Okocha would be ideal for the way Martins plays," he told BBC Sport in London.

"His quality of service would create numerous chances for Obafemi to score."

A successful partnership between the two, yet to feature together in the same Nigerian line-up, could unleash the potential of Martins on the international stage.

It is a prospect that Nigeria's remaining opponents in the World Cup qualifiers would not be looking forward to

Somehow I hope Nigeria play badly and then we finish top and quilify. On other hand I dont see the point of going to WC and get thrashed like Saudi Arabia. Though Zimbabwe aint crap as Saudi Arabia.(H)

I watched the game South Africa vs Cape Verde, I'm South African I tell u I watched that game on edge of my seat. Those Cabo Verde guys are big and most of them have mad skill especially in the midfield and the goal they scored against SA was a wake up call for us.

Even thought SA will qualify to the WC 2006, Cape Verde will surprise a lot of guys.

Lito (Moreirense) and Eliseu (Belenenses) are good players. Lito is a great winger. All players have european experience in a decent league.

All the favourites lost their matches last week, well apart from Cameroon who drew with Libya. Now Ivory Coast is topping group 2. Ivory Coast playing Cameroon in their next match. So if Ivory Coast win all their next matches, we could see them in WC 2006. Nigeria lost to Angola:rofl:

Angolan players plays almost all in Portugal and isn't a shock their won against Nigeria. In 1998 Angola missed the WC just in the goal difference for Cameroon and the team is very good.
Angola is top of the group and if they qualify will not be a surprise for me.

Mantorras is the star of the angolan NT but he is injured right now.
