2-1: Smolarek and Koller fire BVB to victory

[22.01.] Great joy and a huge sigh of relief in the Borussia Dortmund camp. At the start of the second half of the season BVB picked up a crucial 2-1 (0-0) win at VfL Wolfsburg and also gained a lot of confidence in their bid to climb up the table. It was a dream debut for new signing Ebi Smolarek, who scored the opening goal for Borussia on 55 minutes.

Approximately 30.000 (a season best for Wolfsburg) spectators at the not quite sold-out Volkswagen Arena saw an evenly balanced first half without any highlights. Only after the interval the game picked up pace. BVB showed an amazing ruthlessness in front of goal with Smolarek and Koller giving them a comfortable 2-0 lead by the hour mark. Ouiroga only managed to pull one back for the hosts on 82 minutes.

THE SCENARIO:

The fourth-placed Bundesliga side took on the 14th. Before kick off, both clubs had been separated not only by 10 places, but also by 12 points. The best home side of the league (21 points) hosted a team that had been struggling before the winter break (just one point and one goal from the last four away matches of 2004), but also one that failed to lose any of their matches in the preparation period.

THE PLAYERS:

With one exception (Dede replaced Jensen), coach Bert van Marwijk fielded the same team that gave a convincing performance against De Graafschap in BVB's Bundesliga dress rehearsal last Monday. Ricken and Metzelder made the starting line-up for the very first time this season. Overall, van Marwijk made five changes to the team that drew 1-1 at Hansa Rostock in the last game of 2004: Metzelder, Bergdölmo, Wörns, Gambino qnd Ricken came on for Demel, Brzenska and Madouni as well as the injured Rosicky and Ewerthon. New signing Smolarek started the match on the bench. Oliseh and Senesie as well as the slightly injured Evanilson and Fernandez didn't make the trip to Wolfsburg. The hosts had to do without the sick Brdaric, but had playmaker D'Alessandro available.

THE TACTICS:

In BVB's 4-3-3 system Christoph Metzelder probably faced the most difficult task. He had to mark the Bundesliga's third-best and Wolfsburg's most potent striker, Petrov. Central defenders Wörns and above all Bergdölmo played against VfL's central striker Klimowicz. On the left Dede faced Topic, who replaced Brdaric in the starting eleven. BVB's central defence did the marking job when Topic left his position. Kehl played a holding role in midfield and took on - supported by Kruska - D'Alessandro. Up front, on the right, Gambino played against Weiser, Koller against Hofland and, on the left, Ricken against Rytter. Wolfsburg also operated with a 4-3-3 formation.

THE ANALYSIS:

Borussia played a mistake free and disciplined game, kept their positions and looked comfortable with the ball at their feet. They looked the brighter of the two teams right from the start, partly because Wolfsburg opted to sit deep in their own half, relying on counter attacks which have earned them a league best nine goals this season. They hoped to capitalise on errors, but BVB just refused to make any. And last but not least, compared to the last match of 2004 against Rostock, Dortmund also improved in the running department. When in possession, the player with the ball always had a team-mate to pass to.

Borussia aimed most of their attacks down the left hand side. When Lars Ricken, BVB's most lively striker, moved to the centre, Kringe took on his job on the left flank. Kringe, Dede, Kehl, who was all over the pitch, as well as Kruska were Borussia's best. Overall, BVB's defence gave a very solid performance in the first half. Only Petrov, on the left, seemed to be able to threaten Borussia's goal from time to time.

It was an interesting game between two fully committed teams that only lacked a goal. The fans saw a couple of half decent chances. Ouiroga was denied by Weidenfeller on 28 minutes, and at the other end Kruska missed with a long-range effort (23 mins).

It was a completely different story after the interval. After Klimowicz wasted a chance to put Wolfsburg in front, new signing Ebi Smolarek, who came on for Gambino at half time, gave Borussia the lead on 55 minutes. He benefited from good work by Kringe, who had beaten Rytter and Ouiroga on the left.

BVB were visibly lifted by the goal. The visitors continued to press forward, but they also remained cautious in defence. Up front, however, they finally showed some ruthlessness: Two chances, two goals. On 60 minutes Ricken slipped the ball to Koller who then wriggled through the Wolfsburg defence before he doubled the advantage and more or less wrapped up the game for Borussia Dortmund. Wolfsburg only managed to pull one back eight minutes from time when Facundo Quiroga scored his debut Bundesliga goal.

THE PROSPECTS:

In their first home game of 2005 BVB take on Borussia Mönchengladbach. There are still tickets left for next Saturday's match at the Westfalen Stadium.

Collective sigh of relief - "This team is fun to watch again"

[23.01.] Metzelder and Kehl left the dressing room arm in arm, van Marwijk hugged press officer Schneck, Dr Rauball and Meier smiled when they got in a Wolfsburg premium product which took them on the autobahn back to Dortmund. Before both had seen a "premium product" on the pitch of the Volkswagen Arena - from a team that appeared to be dead and buried. Yesterday Borussia Dortmund returned from the dead with an impressive performance.

Among the 29.621 spectators - the second biggest gate in Wolfsburg history - were approximately 4.000 supporters of and/or from Dortmund. 'We are yellow, we are black. And we are the world's best fans.'' BVB dominated the Wolfsburg Arena with their chants from the start, and later they enthusiastically celebrated Borussia's perfect start to the second half of the season.

Before Sunday's games, BVB have increased the gap to the relegation zone to seven points. And they are also only seven points away - and still nine places - from a Uefa Cup spot. "We are only thinking from game to game and first of all we have to become more stable," said Sebastian Kehl, who once again showed that he has the heart of a lion. And he was again one of Borussia's best. Yesterday, however, he played for a BVB side that included players who fought back when they lost the ball, who didn't lack confidence or doubt, but who showed a lot of commitment and heart. "This was the team we all want to see. Willing to run and willing to fight," praised general manager Michael Meier.

In the 2-1 defeat to Wolfsburg in the season opener BVB had started the match with 10 foreign players. Yesterday Borussia fielded 8 Germans, including Hagen-born Salvatore Gambino. "Show me a club in Europe that is fielding three first-team players from their own junior set-up," said coach Bert van Marwijk, referring to Ricken, Kringe and Gambino. And with Brzenka a fourth home-grown talent was sitting on the bench. Yesterday BVB fielded a team with an average age of 25,6 years - a good blend of young and experienced players.

"It's nice to see that our youth scheme is bearing fruit," acknowledged Meier and also said about highly-praised, 17-year-old Marc-André Kruska: "He makes mistakes, but he corrects them straight away. Normally you're happy with a player his age if he doesn't decline, but he's actually making an impact." - "It's not a surprise for me," added van Marwijk. "We will hear a lot more from him in the future. But let's not forget about Kringe, who also gave a fine performance."

Kruska, Kringe - two of many names mentioned yesterday. There was also the solid Bergdölmo, the hard-working Kehl as well as the (in the latter stages of the match) outstanding Metzelder and Wörns. And there was the team player Lars Ricken, who made his first full game in the Bundesliga since 17 December 2003, and who yesterday brilliantly set up Jan Koller's goal. "I'm also happy for him. That he was given another chance and that he has taken his chance," said Meier. "Talent-wise, Ricken is one of the best players of our squad. But he also has to be physically fit to cope with the pace of the Bundesliga for 90 minutes," said van Marwijk. "I have to thank the coach for accepting that I was and am willing to change my situation. I've worked very hard for it. He's asked a lot of me in training, criticised and praised me and offered me a way back to the team. This was very constructive," said Ricken. "But this can only be a start."

One player we shouldn't forget to mention is of course Ebi Smolarek, who scored his debut goal for Borussia Dortmund nine minutes after coming on as a substitute. "His transfer has already paid off," said a cheerful Michael Zorc. After all, BVB's sports manager was in charge of the loan deal. German tabloid "Bild", however, had spoiled the mood a bit last week, disparagingly calling the Polish striker with a Dutch passport a "hash bomber." Smolarek view on this matter: "It's not the way I would like to be welcomed. But this ridiculing didn't really bother me. Important is that you give your answer with your feet and not your mouth. When I play then I want to give 100 percent." And he added: "I realised in training that the team has a lot of potential." And Bert van Marwijk said: "Smolarek made a dream debut, but he didn't surprise me. Among other things he has an eye for goal, is always at the right place. He is already worth his pay."

"Our opponents kept their positions well, but with that coach it wasn't much of a surprise for me," said Wolfsburg's coach Eric Gerets after his team failed to defend the bill as the league's best home side. "We wanted to put the Dortmund defence under pressure with three strikers and D'Alessandro behind them - but there just wasn't any pressure," admitted Gerets. Mainly because BVB defended with a lot of discipline and proved just how much a team can achieve if it sticks to the basics - willingness to run and sticking to positions.

"I'm really happy about the victory, because our whole dilemma has started with the defeat in the first match," said Meier. "We can build on it. This team is finally fun to watch again!" At halftime, when it was still 0-0, van Marwijk had told his players: "If you really want to win a match, then you will find the net." Yesterday BVB found the net twice, through Koller and Smolarek. "I have to thank Borussia that I have been given the chance to play some football again," said Smolarek. "Now I'm looking forward to playing in front of 83.000 spectators."

BVB's next opponents on Saturday are Borussia Mönchengladbach, currently 15th in the Bundesliga, one place behind Dortmund. And there might be a selection dilemma for van Marwijk, because Tomas Rosicky is eager to return to a team that yesterday included only winners. But the BVB coach is actually looking forward to the competition. "We now have 26 players fighting for 18 spots in the squad. Those who can't cope with this have to stay home."

[24.01.] Borussia Dortmund coach Bert van Marwijk has to do without striker Salvatore Gambino for the next three to four weeks. According to BVB team doctor Markus Braun, a scan revealed today that the 21-year-old has sustained a partial tear of the anterior and central ligaments of his right ankle in Saturday´s 2-1 win at VfL Wolfsburg.

Borussia Dortmund have not transferred club name and club logo

[3.02.] In the last couple of days there have been a number of reports in the media claiming that Borussia Dortmund have allegedly transferred the club name and the club logo to the Gerling corporation on the security of a chattel mortgage. The Borussia Dortmund GmbH & Co. KGaA has released this statement about the reports concerning the Gerling corporation:

bild
1. It´s not correct that the Borussia Dortmund GmbH & Co. KGaA has transferred the club name and the club logo to the Gerling corporation on the security of a chattel mortgage. Such a procedure would have been improper.

2. The Borussia Dortmund GmbH & Co. KGaA has rather transferred Gerling six trademark rights, which include the club name and the club logo of Borussia Dortmund. This concerns registered industrial property rights for commercial purposes, which are above all linked to merchandising goods and similar services.

3. The right of BV Borussia Dortmund 09 e.V to use their club name and logo is not touched by the contract with the Gerling corporation. The non-material use of club name and club logo is unlimited to club and to all fan clubs, and this includes exploitation rights.

anyway tommorow against 96 from Hannover.

Bor. Dortmund: Weidenfeller - Madouni, Wörns, Brzenska, Dede - Kehl - Kruska, Kringe - Smolarek, Koller, Ricken.

Evanilson is against out.
I think Madouni will play for him.
