Roma ponder Fiore swoop Friday 22 December, 2006
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The agent of Torino’s Stefano Fiore has revealed that Roma could launch a January bid for his client.
The midfielder has struggled to settle since his loan move from Valencia and has had to accommodate himself on the Granata bench in recent times.
And given his frosty relationship with boss Alberto Zaccheroni, Federico Pastorello has hinted that a New Year switch may be on the cards.
“Fiore is liked by Roma who already made an enquiry with Valencia during the summer,” he told Teleradiostereo Sport.
“I’m not aware of any contact at the minute between Roma and Torino, but it wouldn’t surprise me if that occurred.
“Roma boss Luciano Spalletti certainly likes him and Fiore, although he has a Lazio past, could be an alternative for Rodrigo Taddei, Amantino Mancini or Simone Perrotta.
“And seeing as Fiore’s contract is still owned by Valencia, I can’t exclude the possibility that they informed themselves of his situation while discussing Francesco Tavano.”
Fiore was expecting to be one of Torino’s key players this term until boss Gianni De Biasi was axed on the eve of the season.
“It’s not nice to see Stefano on the bench,” added Pastorello. “However, in 12 years as a professional, Fiore has only had problems with Zaccheroni at Lazio and now in Turin.
“If we had known that Torino would be turning to their present Coach then we wouldn’t have accepted the Granata’s offer in the summer.”
Roma 2 - 0 Cagliari

Roma end 2006 on a high with this comfortable win - including a truly magnificent Rodrigo Taddei overhead kick - to keep the pressure on Inter.
The Giallorossi have been on scintillating form - bar the derby debacle - and welcomed back Christian Panucci, though they lost Matteo Ferrari and Simone Perrotta. Neutrals were hoping for a repeat of last season's 4-3 home victory, but new Cagliari Coach Franco Colomba would be happy with a point considering his debut defeat to Fiorentina. It's always a special game for Daniele Conti, the son of Roma legend and current director Bruno.
The Sardinians had a bright start, as within the opening 90 seconds David Suazo had run rings around Cristian Chivu and Alexander Doni had to beat away his shot at the near post.
But it was Roma who took the lead in truly spectacular fashion. Panucci's cross found Taddei for a textbook overhead kick volley under the bar!
Suazo drilled off target and Joe Bizera nodded a corner wide, but the home side went close to a second when Aleandro Rosi thumped the upright.
Marco Fortin saved Panucci's header and then stuck out a foot to parry Taddei's angled drive from point-blank range.
David Pizarro's angled drive took a coat of paint off the far post, but after the break Doni did well to pluck Mauro Esposito's taut cross out of the air.
Amantino Mancini made it 2-0 with a good team move down the right flank. Taddei set Rosi running and his cut-back was struck first time low and precise by the Brazilian.
Moments later Mancini's counter-attack was closed down by Fortin, again on a Taddei assist, and Cagliari more or less gave up at this stage. Philippe Mexes was booked and will be suspended for the first game of 2007.

The next match......14 of January with Messina.
Luciano Spalletti hinted that Vincenzo Montella has asked to leave Roma in the January transfer window.
“I have seven or eight players in my squad who are angry because they don’t get to play regularly,” confessed the Coach.
“Montella is among them, as I think he has been penalised by my way of dealing with the team, but I do it for the good of Roma.”
The veteran hitman has barely featured for the Giallorossi this season, making just 17 appearances in all competitions in which he scored six goals.
More importantly, only seven of those appearances were starts for a total of 597 minutes in Serie A, 76 in the Champions League and 190 for the Coppa Italia.
“Everyone recognises Montella’s quality, but I cannot get the best out of everyone, especially as he is not the most commanding figure physically. It becomes difficult to make him stay under certain conditions, and the team has found a balance, but nothing has been finalised yet.”
Montella has been heavily linked with a January move to Milan, although an overseas option is also available for l'Aeroplanino.

Totti plans to play on Wednesday 27 December, 2006
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Francesco Totti plans to play until he is 38-years-old and intends to extend his agreement with Roma, confirmed the Giallorossi captain.
The world champion is currently contracted to the capital city club until 2011, but is ready to commit to the outfit until the end of his career, which started back in 1993.
“My contract expires in 2011, but before then I want to extend it for two or three years beyond that date,” said Totti to the magazine Number 10.
“I will keep on playing until I am physically fit, although I have yet to decide what to do after that. I won’t become a Coach, because it is not part of my DNA. I would like to become a club official instead.”
Someone suggested in the past that Totti might have won more had he chosen to leave Roma, but Er Pupone has no regrets.
“I am happy I decided to stay. Love is very important in my life and I could never find elsewhere the love I have felt in this city.
“I would have never been Totti somewhere else, here I truly feel part of a family,” explained Roma’s symbol, who is sure that his supporters will one day find his true successor.
“I believe that there will be someone after me, the fans do not need to worry. Roma is full of talents,” concluded the 30-year-old.

Fulham crave Montella Sunday 31 December, 2006
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fulham boss Chris Coleman admits he’s interested in signing want-away Roma hitman Vincenzo Montella.
"If I was to stand here and say I don't know who Montella is obviously I'd be telling a lot of lies," he told Sky Sports News.
"But I won't comment, as he's a Roma player. I know he's been linked with us and apparently he is in the country. I won't say anything on that. He's a player we like, but I would imagine lots of people like him."
The 32-year-old striker has made it clear he wants a January move away from the Olimpico after realising he does not play an integral part in Coach Luciano Spalletti’s plans.
Although he has primarily been linked with Milan, it seems they are looking at other options now and Montella is on the verge of an overseas switch.
Plagued by injuries in recent years, he made just 13 Serie A appearances for Roma last season and has featured in 17 games in all competitions this term, scoring six goals.
However, the ex-Sampdoria star is behind Francesco Totti, Mirko Vucinic and January arrival Francesco Tavano from Valencia in the pecking order.
There are reports in ‘The Times’ newspaper that Montella will undergo a medical for The Cottagers over the next few days.
He is the second most prolific Serie A player still in activity with 137 career goals, just one behind leader Enrico Chiesa.
Montella takes Fulham flight Wednesday 3 January, 2007
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Vincenzo Montella’s era at Roma is over after he left the training ground today to complete his loan to Fulham.
The striker, nicknamed ‘Aeroplanino’ for his flying celebratory gesture, did not take part in today’s session at Trigoria and the fact was not mentioned on the club website, indicating he is already considered an ex-Giallorossi player.
Released for the January transfer window after discovering he did not play a part in Coach Luciano Spalletti’s plans, he leaves after seven years at the Stadio Olimpico.
Although it is not yet official, even teammate Philippe Mexes admitted the switch to Fulham was a certainty.
“I hope he will score many goals in England and also that he one day comes back to Roma,” said the defender.
It could well be a temporary transfer, as Montella’s contract with the Giallorossi lasts until June 2010. He was, along with Francesco Totti, the only man remaining from the 2001 Scudetto winning team.
A group of fans waited outside the gates with a large banner that read: ‘We are with you, nine metres above the sky.’
The former Empoli and Sampdoria hitman scored 102 goals for Roma – 83 in Serie A, eight for the Coppa Italia, another eight in the UEFA Cup, two Champions League and one Italian Super Cup strike.
