Spalletti ignores Scudetto Monday 15 January, 2007

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Roma boss Luciano Spalletti was not worried after the home draw with Messina as his side aren’t expected to win the Scudetto.

The Giallorossi dropped to nine points behind leaders Inter after the slip-up at the Stadio Olimpico, but the Coach believes it was not a decisive result.

“We will keep on going – I don’t think two points mean that much at this stage,” said Spalletti on Monday.

“We are not forced to win the Scudetto, therefore if we were not to reach that result I wouldn’t be that disappointed, it wouldn’t mean that the season was a failure – Inter are a strong side.

“The team played well yesterday and this is the most important thing. Unfortunately the pitch did not allows us to develop our usual game, but we cannot expect to win every game.”

Spalletti has yet to renew his contract, which expires in June, but director general Rosella Sensi does not believe that there will be any problems.

“The Coach’s extension? We are all serene, we just need to be left alone,” said the official, who refused to compare the tactician to any of his predecessors, as done with Roberto Mancini and Helenio Herrera.

“Who would I compare Spalletti to? Only to Spalletti,” added Sensi.

Watched the game, you needed the killer instinct but instead players like Totti and Wilhelmsson tried to find the Euro goal.

Anyway it's Inter's year, next game vs Fiorentina Ujfalusi and Mutu are out b/c they got a yellow today.

inter will be too strong, and their form is unreal right now. but for our game we are missing de rossi and pizarro, so our midfield is in trouble.

Spalletti earns Roma reward
Tuesday, 16 January 2007

AS Roma have rewarded coach Luciano Spalletti with a new contract after a fine run of form that has seen the club riding high at home and abroad.

'Happy'
The terms of the 47-year-old's deal will be disclosed later today but the Italian side were "happy" to confirm the extension last night. Spalletti joined Roma before the 2004/05 season from Udinese Calcio. After making his name at Empoli FC, whom he also served as a player, he went on to work at UC Sampdoria, AC Venezia and Ancona Calcio. Roma, second in Serie A but nine points behind FC Internazionale Milano, face Olympique Lyonnais on 21 February and 6 March for a place in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.

Zotti leaves Roma for Sampdoria

UC Sampdoria have signed AS Roma goalkeeper Carlo Zotti on loan until the end of the season. The 24-year-old, who has made 14 Serie A appearances (all in 2004/05), was third choice at the Stadio Olimpico behind Doni and Gianluca Curci.

The first half has ended.

Parma wins with us 2:1 after two scores by Muslimovic (11', 43'). We are dominating most of time but Parma makes more situations and turns them into goals. We play without a classy striker and that's the result of it. What Okaka done in first part? Totally nothing. Spaletti should bring on the pitch one of duo Totti, Tavano. Wilhelmsson is doing quite good on the wing but it doesn't give any effect.

We must pick ourselves up and show our class.(H)

We're in the semi-finals!
2:2

Pizarro saved us. He scored a nice goal just few minutes before the the last whistle. Spaletti did some changes but it didn't give any effect. Also Tavano made his debut. Totti spent whole time on the bench.

Wilhelmsson is crap...

Spalletti eyes Milan semi Thursday 18 January, 2007

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Roma boss Luciano Spalletti hopes that his side will meet Milan in the Coppa Italia semi-finals. “It would be a prestigious match,” he declared.

The Giallorossi progressed to the next round after a 2-2 draw away at Parma on Wednesday, winning 4-3 on aggregate.

They will probably face the Rossoneri next in the competition, who play the last quarter-final against Arezzo following the San Siro win last week.

“We arrived here convinced that that we could control the match, but Parma caused us a lot of discomfort,” the Coach told RAI after the match at the Stadio Tardini.

“They scored immediately, but we reacted and had several opportunities. They proved they are a strong side.

“Now there is a good chance that we will meet Milan – this semi-final is prestigious for Roma. We deserved it and I am sure it will be a nice match to watch.”

Newly signed Christian Wilhelmsson was in the starting line-up and impressed Spalletti, who believes the Swedish player will be an asset for the Giallorossi.

“He played very well, he was ready from a physical point of view and immediately integrated himself in to the team. We needed this signing to complete the squad,” he said.

“As to Francesco Tavano, he still needs some days to recover his best condition. He hasn’t played for a long time and still needs to train, but I believe he will be ready in a few days.”

Spalletti looks on bright side Sunday 21 January, 2007

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Luciano Spalletti says Roma must be aware of their weaknesses and try to bring out their strengths against Livorno.

“We always have the same little issues to deal with and defects we can’t seem to shake, but we thankfully have more plus points than minus,” explained the Coach.

“What will really count is our ability to understand these various aspects of our nature to work around them. At Parma, for example, it wasn’t easy to come out of there with the right result considering the way things were going. We showed great maturity.”

David Pizarro netted late into that 2-2 Coppa Italia draw, sending the Giallorossi through to the semi-finals, where they will face Milan.

However, both Pizarro and Daniele De Rossi are suspended for this match, while Alberto Aquilani, Rodrigo Defendi and Ricardo Faty are injured.

Philippe Mexes and Cristian Chivu are dealing with muscular problems, but the real worry is Francesco Totti.

“Totti has a bruised right foot and a micro-fracture to a finger in his left hand. He’s good with his feet, so we’ll have to wait and see how that injury pans out,” joked Spalletti.

With the midfield crisis, new signing Christian Wilhelmsson is expected to start with Chivu perhaps pushed forward to take over De Rossi’s protective position.

There is another dimension to this trip to the Stadio Picchi, where Daniele Arrigoni saw his job saved this week by the protests of the players against President Aldo Spinelli.

“The faith they showed in Arrigoni means the team will come out with the knife between their teeth, ready for battle. They’re having a fine season anyway and have some excellent individuals, like Cristiano Lucarelli.”

Stadio Picchi

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Francesco Totti scored the equaliser at the Stadio Picchi, but he was also sent off as Roma slide 11 points behind leaders Inter.

Tension was sky high at the Stadio Picchi. Daniele Arrigoni made his 'comeback' on the Livorno bench after he was fired and re-hired in the space of 48 hours thanks to the protests of his players, while the Giallorossi knew they needed a win to close the nine-point gap from leaders Inter.

Sami Kuffour and Dario Passoni returned from bans, but David Pizarro and Daniele De Rossi were suspended for the visitors. Roma were unbeaten here in Serie A since a 2-1 defeat in March 1949.

Marco Amelia picked up an injury during the warm-up, though replacement Emanuele Manitta nearly handed Francesco Totti an opener with his dreadful clearance after a couple of minutes.

New signing Christian Wilhelmsson was lively in a wide right role and his early strike was charged down. Philippe Mexes wasted a golden opportunity on 15 minutes, as Totti's free kick was parried to his feet only for the defender to balloon over from six yards.

Cristiano Lucarelli was brought down by Matteo Ferrari in a soft penalty and the first kick had to be retaken due to encroachment, but the captain took the same near bottom corner and converted for a second time to give Livorno the lead.

Manitta turned a long-range Cristian Chivu snapshot out for a corner, then Amantino Mancini fired over on a Mexes assist. Christian Panucci got on the end of a free kick to turn over, while Manitta fingertipped a deflected Chivu effort round the upright.

Roma were more aggressive coming out for the second half, although Rodrigo Taddei wasted a couple of promising opportunities. Francesco Tavano made his Serie A debut for the Giallorossi, replacing Ferrari for an all-attack 4-1-4-1 formation sending Chivu back into defence.

Manitta performed a splendid reaction save on Mancini's volley after fine work from Totti and Taddei. Moments later Marc Pfertzel flung himself at another Mancini strike to deflect it over the bar.

Roma eventually grabbed a deserved equaliser with their symbol, Francesco Totti. Mancini threaded through for Wilhelmsson, whose low cross was flicked in from six yards by Er Pupone for his 13th goal of the season.

There were penalty appeals for a Mexes handling offence, but the extremely tense game exploded in stoppages. Totti and Fabio Galante clashes repeatedly and the Roma captain was sent off for taking his protests too far. He was even furious with Giallorossi club worker Vito Scala and pushed him to the ground as he was led away!

The Disciplinary Commission's report will be crucial, as if there's more than a statutory one-match ban, Totti could miss Inter-Roma.

On TV they said Totti punched Galante, I saw it and he only pushed him because Galante elbowed him. Result, Totti red and Galante nothing. Who do you guys play in a couple of weeks? ;)

We play with Siena at Olimpico.

Edit:
Looking at the replay, Galante should clearly have been sent off, but of course the referee doesn't have the benefit of watching a replay.

Nevertheless, Totti's reaction deserved a yellow card, a red card was too severe.:nape:
