Are you still eating chicken?

Now that the H5N1 strain of the Avian flu virus has hit parts of Western Europe, and is supposedly headed across the Atlantic to North America, it seems like a lot of people have suddenly gone into panic mode; staying well away from chicken and poultry meats, stocking up on tinned foods and face masks, and getting flu shots for themselves and even their pet birds.

So what's it like where you live? Have you already decided to go without KFC or having eggs for breakfast.

Here in Australia most people are following the news with some interest but I can't say there's any major concern shown from either the ordinary public or the government, maybe the fact that we live in the nether ends of the earth might have something to do with it, not too many birds can be arsed flying all the way over here. And our reputation for locking up unwanted refugees must surely help too.

In any case, I don't think I'll be giving up chicken even if the virus did get here, life just wouldn't be the same without those Twisters and Zinger burgers. And I don't think the people that usually have McChicken burgers at McDonalds have a reason to worry either, the fact that they use any real chicken at all to make those burgers is still very much debatable.

you can't catch the avian flu by eating the meat, yet anyway. and if you can, at least id die eating a nice food.

With all the inspection of poultry, the chances of dying coz of bird flu are smaller than a freak mortal accident involving a piano, a blind, of rabies-suffering dog and a twig.

So, to answer your question: although two of our neighbouring countries have their share of H5 (and possible H5N1) infections, I will still have my occasional chickenburger and enjoy it to the fullest, thank you very much.

you can't catch it by eating it cooked as someone said.

May be dangerous to handle it while it isn't though, so I think it's better to just buy the already cooked meat and make sure it's well done and not rare.

Well I cook at my apartment. There aren't any known cases of bird flu here in the US (yet) so I'll take my chances till they take chicken off the shelves.

I eat chicken every single day. well almost..

I live in Asia and I still eat chicken and ducks. For me personally don`t be too worry about it, you can die in a split second one way or another. Just enjoy and keep eating anything you want . . .

Problem with avian flu is that people will ignore it until it happens. By then, it's too late. It's a very real problem. As highlighted by the OTT media coverage.

Fact remains, if that becomes a person-to-person disease, humanity is a bit ****ed.

1919 - Spanish flu. Killed millions. Killed millions before the days of air travel. Couple the infectious nature of the virus with a well-timed holiday to Bermuda, and it's somewhere else before you even know you've got it.

At the moment, it's simply a bird problem, but if it mutates, we're in trouble. It's the potential of the problem that's worrying.

I haven't heard one person ever mention that they or others should stop eating chicken. So I mean, what's the point of asking something that no one has been asked to do yet? Yeah, I still eat chicken, it's the easiest meat to cook (can go with anything), one of the healthiest, and it tastes good.

But I can't believe you guys are Pimping KFC. Yuck! Popeye's is where it's at. I don't know how anyone could ever eat KFC after one bite of Popeye's amazing chicken.
