What does the "Popular" vote mean?

Its something like 50%-49% to Obama.

I think it means the overall number of individual votes cast for each candidate

Well... that was fun. Some of the comments made on tv by random callers were enlightening, for want of a better word. I think the choice of Palin for VP proved to be unwise on McCains' part. The choice of SNL to have Fey play Palin was brilliant, on the other hand. There's always 2012, McCain...

Thankyou America. It's taken eight years but you got it right. I feel a bit sorry for the dude, probably the worst time to become president what with all the crap caused by the previous administration, but hopefully he can carry the people along as he realigns the position of the US in the world. From an outsiders perspective (albeit someone with an American wife) his colour has little import, what matters is what he does with Iraq, Afghanistan, Israel/ Palestine, and getting to grips with the emerging power of China and Russia. Once he starts to show some initiative on that front that doesn't involve bullets, then I will make a judgement on hm as a leader.

But for now, it is great to see a possible change in direction. And if he sorts out that ridiculous healthcare system you have, I might even consider moving there for a bit.

Man I got drunk and passed out just as Obama won, how depressing.

God votes McCain.

I cried 3 times listening to Obama's speech. And that wasn't even live. Such an inspiring president you guys have for America.

Kouchner, the French Foreign Minister even made "un geste de rapproachment", calling on Europe to work along side its American friends, not America, nor American Imperialism but our American friends. :)

Laughed my ass off when I say a clip of what I think was from McCain's campaigning somewhere. A women was sitting across to McCain and talking to him:

-"I don't trust Obama."
-"He's... he's not... he's..."
-"He's an ARAB!"
McCain takes the mic away from her (looking at her with the thought "stupid bitch") and says:
-"No he's not..."
The lady:
-"He's NOT?!"

(H)

Just caught some pieces of the speech, but it was pretty impressing, and as everybody's saying - he speaks so well. The part that struck a chord in me, and I remember the clearest was something like this:
"This shows that a skinny boy with a funny name can have a dream and make it come true."
Not with those exact words, but that was the idea of it, and the little bit of humour in it was what made it work for me, even if it was rather a beautiful thought as it was.

Congratulations Obama! Hopefully we can get the "Change we need".

You know, we're a moderate-to-liberal nation and if anyone has an issue with that, Melbourne is a nice city.

It's taken nine years, but I'm confident that New Zealanders will finally get it right on Saturday.

Oh man if there was a Youtube of this..!

Haha, Coleman beats Franken by 700 votes. (H)

I'm sure Franken will call for a recount, but if this holds up it would be pure awesomeness.

Looks like the Senate will be 56-44 for the Dems (and that's counting bi-curious Lieberman as a Democrat), not as bad as I feared. Some really narrow victories for the Republicans there.

Anyone surprised that California, a state which overwhelmingly supported Obama, also voted to ban gay marriages? Two other states (Florida and Arizona) banned them as well, Florida with an overwhelming majority.

On the other hand, ballot measures that sought to restrict abortion failed. I don't get it - Americans are conservative enough to deny homosexuals the right to marry but not conservative enough to grant unborn children the right to live? Fascinating.

Was it Arizona that banned gay adoption? That's just poor form. Do these idiots really think a child is better off with no parents than gay parents?

The best part is that many against it are "lower taxes!" conservatives who apparently don't understand that a child entrusted to the State is cared for with tax dollars whereas one adopted by homosexual parents is cared for by their parents money.

Good call, guys.

I think it was Arkansas, but that really shocked me too.

Don't get too excited yet Shifty. Oregon looks like a pure tossup still, Georgia is headed for a runoff, and Minnesota is going to a recount. Dems would still have a shot at 60 seats if those stupid ******* Alaskans hadn't re-elected a CONVICTED FELON! I mean, what the ****? How did Stevens get re-elected? I'm ****ting myself in disbelief over that.

Arkansas.

In all fairness though, many of the people who vote against gay adoption are also the ones most likely to adopt children. At least, I would assume that to be the case if the common denominator there is "conservative Christians."

Stevens can't even vote for himself, that's the best part.
